5Endowed Chairs for Cohen, Gould, ScholesTwo members of the faculty-WilliamCohen andWilliam B. Gould IV-havebeen named to endowedLaw School chairs. Theirappointments became officialFebruary 14 at the <strong>University</strong>Board of Trusteesmeeting.Three months earlier athird professor-Myron S.Scholes, who holds a jointappointment with theGraduate School of Business-becamethe FrankE. Buck Professor of Financeat the GSB. Scholescontinues his concurrentappointment as professorof law.Professor Cohen is nowthe C. Wendell and EdithM. Carlsmith Professor ofLaw. The chair, which wasestablished in 1977, isnamed after its donors. Mr.Carlsmith, a 1928 graduateof the School, was seniorpartner in Carlsmith, Carlsmith,Wichman & Case ofHawaii.He and his wife, the formerEdith A. Mattson (AB'28) both graduated from<strong>Stanford</strong>, as did over 25other members of theCarlsmith family. Those inthe field of law include MerrillL. Carlsmith (AB '28, JD'30), Donn Wendell Carlsmith(AB '50) and CarlDuane Carlsmith (AB '58).Cohen is the secondholder of the Carlsmithchair, following ThomasEhrlich, former dean of theSchool.Professor Gould hasbeen named to the CharlesA. Beardsley Professorshipin Law, first held by CharlesJ. Meyers, who followedEhrlich as dean.The Beardsley chairwas established in 1965through a bequest to <strong>Stanford</strong>by Mr. Beardsley, whoearned both his AB ('06)and JD ('08) degrees at the<strong>University</strong>.Beardsley was a distinguishedOakland attorneyand founding partner ofFitzgerald, Abbott &Beardsley." A great believerin the value of practical experience,he taught parttime at the Law School fornine years. His will providedfor law scholarshipsas well as for the chair thatbears his name.The Buck chair, whichProfessor Scholes nowholds, was previously heldby noted GSB professorGeorge L. Bach.Scholes, 42, came to<strong>Stanford</strong> last year as the<strong>University</strong>'s first business/law appointment. A leadingfinance theorist, heearned both PhDland MBAdegrees from the <strong>University</strong>of Chicago. His background,which includes anendowed professorship infinance at Chicago, wasdescribed in a recent issueof <strong>Stanford</strong> <strong>Lawyer</strong> (Winter1982/83, p. 26).Brief biographies of thenew holders of the Carlsmithand Beardsleychairs-both seasonedmembers of the <strong>Stanford</strong>Law faculty-follow.William CohenCohen, the C. Wendell andEdith M. Carlsmith Professorof Law, is an authorityon constitutional law.Constitutional LawCases and Materials-atext he coauthored withEdward L. Barrett, Jr.-isused in some 50 lawschools throughout thecountry.Cohen has also publishedtwo other constitutionallawcase books:Comparative ConstitutionalLaw Cases and Materials(with Mauro Cappelletti,1979), and ConstitutionalLaw: Civil Liberty and IndividualRights (with JohnKaplan, 1975).In addition, he teachesand writes in the fieldsof torts and federaljurisdiction."Professor Cohen is adedicated and demandingteacher, and his courseschallenge the brighteststudents," said Dean Ely,who reported Cohen's appointmentto the trustees.Cohen, in a recent interview,said that his chiefgoal in teaching "is not totrain people to think as Ido, but rather to think forthemselves."I'd like them to beskeptical and develop theirown ideas-to make uptheir own minds abouttough questions."Cohen, 50, clerked forSupreme Court JusticeWilliam O. Douglas in1956-57, after earning bothhis BA (1953) and law degrees(1956) from the<strong>University</strong> of California,Los Angeles (UCLA).Professor ScholesWhile in law school, hewas editor-in-chief of theUCLA Law Review and<strong>Spring</strong> <strong>1984</strong> <strong>Stanford</strong> <strong>Lawyer</strong><strong>31</strong>
