J¥ Have a look at the schoolÕs prospectus.Choosing a SchoolIt is important for the parent to visit a variety of schools in the area beforedeciding where they would like their child to go, and gather as muchinformation as they can. Here are some points to help.¥ Ask to see the schools SEN policy and find out which governor hasresponsibility for special educational needs within the school.¥ Find out about the schoolÕs admission policy.¥ Have a talk to the schoolÕs SENCO.¥ Find out how the school involves parents and communicates withthem.¥ Have a look around the school. Notice class sizes particularly.¥ Speak to parents who already have children at the school- especiallyif their children have special needs. When your child has started schoolIf the parent or the childÕs teacher is concerned about the childÕs progress thefirst step is for them to talk together and see what can be done. They maythen feel that the school SENCO needs to be involved.School ActionThe SENCO will assess the childÕs difficulties and decide what support isneeded to help the childÕs progress. This will be done in consultation with theparents and the childÕs teacher. An Individual Education Plan [IEP] will bewritten which should say what targets the child will be aiming to achieve, howthey will be helped to do this, and when their progress will next be reviewed. This should happen at least twice a year.School Action PlusIf the action taken using the resources available within school proves not tobe enough the school may ask for extra support from outside agencies suchas an Educational Psychologist or a specialist teacher. This is known as SchoolAction Plus. A new IEP will be written to take account of this.17
