Acknowledgements In the first place I must thank the General Fisheries Council for the Mediterranean (of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) for allowing me to make full use of the material in their publications, especially the comprehensive Catalogue of the Names of Mediterranean Fish, Molluscs and Crustaceans, published by them jointly with Vito Bianco Editore of Milan.
