JOSEPHLACROSSE SKILLSCatching: The act <strong>of</strong> receiving a passed ballwith the crosse.Checking: The act <strong>of</strong> attempting todislodge the ball from an opponent’s stick.Poke Check: A stick check in which theplayer pokes the head <strong>of</strong> his stick at anopponent’s stick through the top hand bypushing with the bottom hand.Slap Check: A stick check in which a playerslaps the head <strong>of</strong> his stick against hisopponent’s stick.Wrap Check: A one-handed check in whichthe defender swings his stick around hisopponent’s body to dislodge the ball.(This check is only legal at the highestlevel <strong>of</strong> play.)Cradling: The coordinated motion <strong>of</strong> thearms and wrists that keeps the ball secure inthe pocket and ready to be passed or shotwhen running.Cutting: A movement by an <strong>of</strong>fensive playerwithout the ball, toward the opponent’sgoal, in anticipation <strong>of</strong> a feed and shot.Feeding: Passing the ball to a teammatewho is in position for a shot on goal.Passing: The act <strong>of</strong> throwing the ball to ateammate with the crosse.Scooping: The act <strong>of</strong> picking up a loose ballwith the crosse.Screening: An <strong>of</strong>fensive tactic in which aplayer near the crease positions himself so asto block the goalkeeper’s view <strong>of</strong> the ball.Shooting: The act <strong>of</strong> throwing the ballwith the crosse toward the goal in anattempt to score.GLOSSARY OF LACROSSE TERMSAttack Goal Area: The area defined by aline drawn sideline to sideline 20 yards fromthe face <strong>of</strong> the goal. Once the <strong>of</strong>fensiveteam crosses the midfield line, it has tenseconds to move the ball into its attackgoal area.Body Check: Contact with an opponentfrom the front – between the shoulders andwaist – when the opponent has the ball or iswithin five yards <strong>of</strong> a loose ball.Box: An area used to hold players who havebeen served with penalties, and throughwhich substitutions on-the-fly are permitteddirectly from the sideline onto the field.Check-up: A call given by the goalie to telleach defender to find his man and call outhis number.Clamp: A face-<strong>of</strong>f maneuver executed byquickly pushing the back <strong>of</strong> the stick on top<strong>of</strong> the ball.Crosse (<strong>St</strong>ick): The equipment used tothrow, catch and carry the ball.Defensive Clearing Area: The area definedby a line drawn sideline to sideline 20 yardsfrom the face <strong>of</strong> the goal. Once the defensiveteam gains possession <strong>of</strong> the ball in this area,it has ten seconds to move the ball acrossthe midfield line.Extra Man Offense (EMO): A man advantagethat results from a time-serving penalty.Face-Off: A technique used to put the ballin play at the start <strong>of</strong> each quarter, or after agoal is scored. The players squat down andthe ball is placed between their crosses.Fast-Break: A transition scoring opportunityin which the <strong>of</strong>fense has at least a one-manadvantage.Ground Ball: A loose ball on the playingfield.Man Down Defense (MDD): The situationthat results from a time-serving penalty thatcauses the defense to play with at least a oneman disadvantage.Midfield Line: The line which bisects thefield <strong>of</strong> play.On-The-Fly Substitution: A substitutionmade during play.Pick: An <strong>of</strong>fensive maneuver in which astationary player attempts to block the path<strong>of</strong> a defender guarding another <strong>of</strong>fensiveplayer.Pocket: The strung part <strong>of</strong> the head <strong>of</strong> thestick that holds the ball.Rake: A face-<strong>of</strong>f move in which a playersweeps the ball to the side.Riding: The act <strong>of</strong> trying to prevent a teamfrom clearing the ball.Clearing: Running or passing the ball fromthe defensive half <strong>of</strong> the field to the attackgoal area.Crease: A circle around the goal with aradius <strong>of</strong> nine feet into which only defensiveplayers may enter.Handle (Shaft): An aluminum, wooden orcomposite pole connected to the head <strong>of</strong> thecrosse.Head: The plastic or wood part <strong>of</strong> the stickconnected to the handle.Release: The term used by an <strong>of</strong>ficial tonotify a penalized player in the box that hemay re-enter the game.Unsettled Situation: Any situation inwhich the defense is not positioned correctly,usually due to a loose ball or broken clear.Lacrosse info obtained from Laxrules.com16
