In fact, nearly all Rush University faculty activelypractice in their respective fields.These teacher-practitioners shared their passion for patient care with1,452 students enrolled in the University in the 2005-2006 school year.Rush University is singularly focused on patients. Rush University educates health careleaders with extensive experience applying the latest medical knowledgein a clinical setting. It does so in the tradition of compassionate care thathas made Rush the medical destination of choice for so many since 1837.Being recognized by the Chicago Tribunefor teaching compassionFor some, it’s gruesome, for others, it’s exciting,but for all first-year medical students anatomylab is an opportunity to learn first-hand howthe human body works. Students’ first exposureto a human cadaver is also a time to learn thefirst lesson of their career — that all patientsare people first. And, to document thatvaluable lesson Chicago Tribune photographerCharles Osgood followed Rush’s first-yearmedical students through anatomy lab.He spoke with professors and students andmonitored their progress. He also documentedthe annual memorial service given by thestudents to honor, remember and thankthose men and women who donated theirbodies to be studied. The video, entitled“Dead Man Teaching,” can be viewed onthe Chicago Tribune Web site through 2008.A simulated environment teachingpatient safety without patient riskOperating room environments can be stressfuland confusing — especially for students notaccustomed to a fast-paced, high-pressuresituation. Students of Rush University are givenan opportunity to adjust and learn in a saferenvironment focused on training for the realthing. The Rush University Simulation Laboratoryis a realistic operating room environmenthousing a life-like, life-sized simulated patient.The simulator has a pulse, blood pressure,heart sounds and the ability to realisticallyrespond to a variety of medical interventionsand health care emergencies. This year, Rushwas among the first institutions in Illinois toobtain a baby simulator which will be used totrain health care providers in pediatric care.It’s physicians like Keith Millikan, MD, so respectedby students that they’ve awarded him with thePhoenix Award for excellence in teaching seventimes in the past 10 years.13 Rush University Medical Center Annual Report 2006 Rush University Medical Center Annual Report 200614
It’s a focus onbuilding andsustainingpartnerships thatbring resourcesand healing toour community.Collaborating with our community totreat and prevent infectious diseasesFounded in 1998 as a joint venture between Rush and the Cook CountyBureau of Health Services, the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center providesa complete range of outpatient care to individuals and families affected byinfectious diseases — especially HIV/AIDS. In fact, the CORE Center isthe largest provider of HIV/AIDS services in the Midwest.Although the CORE Center is overseen by the Cook County Bureau ofHealth Services, Rush is critically involved in its activities. In 2006, physiciansat Rush provided care at the CORE Center, collaborated on researchprojects, rotated fellows through as part of their training and providedoperational support. Rush leaders also continued to serve on its board.Rush’s involvement with the CORE Center enriches not only practiceand education, it also contributes services that increase the chances ofpositive outcomes for patients. For example, out of 100 births to HIVinfectedmothers, CORE Center patients had no infected babies —national averages suggest that 15 to 25 infected babies should be expected.Established to provide high-quality, compassionate care to those affectedby infectious diseases, the CORE Center provides a comprehensive rangeof care that includes primary care, mental health services, social and legalservices, and support services like diagnostic testing, acupuncture andnutrition counseling. The center provides the latest treatments, research,prevention and education for all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.Together, Rush and the CORE Center seek to better understand andto prevent HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases through educationand research.Helping kids with math and scienceEstablished by the Department of CommunityAffairs at Rush as a response to low science,math and reading scores in the Chicago PublicSchools, the Science and Math ExcellenceNetwork works to provide the same educationalopportunities for students and teachers onChicago’s West Side as those in more affluentareas. Formed in 1990, the SAME Networkcreates interest and improves efficiency inscience, math and literacy by building stateof-the-artscience laboratories in local schools,creating distinctive programs and supportingthe professional development of teachers. Sinceits launch, the SAME Network has grown to acollaboration between Rush and 45 elementaryschools, six high schools and many localbusinesses. In 2006 5,334 children and teensbenefited from the SAME Network’s services.A collaboration with the American CancerSociety to increase access to the best careA new collaboration established this yearbetween Rush and the American Cancer Societyhelped to ease the burden of cancer patientsand their loved ones. This team effort broughta full-time patient navigator, Erin Kessler,LCSW, to the Rush Cancer Resource Program.From coordinating appointments and assistingwith transportation to locating support groupsand obtaining wigs for patients undergoingtreatment, Kessler guides Rush’s cancer patientsthrough the treatment process to minimizeemotional stress and maximize patients’ abilityto cope once they leave the hospital.
