We consistently usematch-play style drills, which allow the defence and attack to practise against one another, learningwhere team players should and will be in order to send a pass to them around the opposition intoavailable space. Our training plans have been so effective in taking us from, undeniably, a talentedgroup of skilled individuals, into a drilled unit, aware of how to work together to defeat the opposition. Both of our coaches, Miss Goldthorpe and Miss Chandler, have put countless hours into work onthe pitch, but it is also their presence and advice off the pitch that has been crucial to our success. Most memorable must be the ‘team geese’ speech, outlining the themes of team work and teamspirit; wearing our hearts on our sleeves and all ready to take our turn flying at the head of our‘v-formation’.In addition, at our first tournament we were all given personal notes on strengths andimprovements, encouraging us but also setting us realistic individual targets. As the seasonprogressed, and we reached the Indoor National Finals, the ability of our coaches to detach themselves fromindividual performances, and consider the whole teameffort, analysing and dissecting our games and ironingout any flaws, are second to none; as Henry Ford says,‘don’t find fault, find a remedy’.Alice Mines (13JC) and Josephine Soloweij-Wedderburn(13SK)Saskia Millard, Laura Sheffield,Sasha Tinkler-Davies, FloAnderson, Millie Parry, JemmaPreston, Maia Webb, SashaWebb, Zita Collier, Freya Hibberd,Izzy Kershaw and Ellie Stratton.Saskia was 1st individual in theYear 8 girls’ and the team came2nd. It was great fun and I would liketo thank the teachers for organising the matches and practices. The internal league was voluntaryfor anyone from Year 7–9 who was not in the A and B squad, but who wanted to work on theirnetball in both a practice and competitive environment. It involved going to a lunchtime practice onTuesday and getting involved in ‘internal’ competitive matches after school. The matches were of ahigh standard and I learnt a lot and am sure everyone else did. As a Year 9, I was able to take ona Captaincy role and found out how difficult it is to make 7 girls do a netball drill and have no ideahow the teachers manage it!Involving Years 7, 8 and 9 was a great opportunity for all of us to get to know people from otheryears. The Year 9s loved it and we all enjoyed talking to and coaching the younger years but we alsolearnt a lot too. The internal league has meant that I have continued to improve my basic skills andtactical understanding and made me much more confident in my netball ability.
