As in past years,Years 9 and 12 pupils guided andinterviewed our guests, elicitingfrom them their memories ofAlleyn’s and the 1960s.As the event takes place duringa ‘normal’ school day, MemoriesDay requires a great deal ofplanning, involving the combinedinput of the Development andAlumni Office, the History andEnglish Departments, IT support,Archives, the Headmaster, theChaplain, Catering, Events, Securityand our porters. Our pupils weremagnificent ambassadors and wehave been receiving many messagesof deep-felt appreciation from ourguests for their involvement, including the following:‘Thank you again for inviting meto yesterday's ‘60s reunion; itwas a real honour to be involved. It was also a great pleasure to beinterviewed and shown aroundby the current pupils who were anabsolute credit to the School’.‘It really was great fun, a big eyeopenerand very well organised. Please pass on my thanks tothe Headmaster, his staff and inparticular the boys and girls wholooked after us old crocks.’safe in their hands (hopefully!).’For more information aboutalumni activities please contactMrs Susannah Schofield,Head of Alumni Relationson 020 8557 1466alumni@alleyns.org.uk or visit:www.edwardalleynclub.com.1 8 A L L E Y N ’ S S C H O O L N E W S L E T T E R L E N T T E R M 2 0 1 3
Hello All,As I write this end-of-term newsletter, thereality is it is not quite the end of term anda raw wind continues to blow; I very muchhope that by the time you read it spring willbe firmly and fragrantly in the air.As previewed in my last missive, the HollyFair was a huge success this year and, despite the door numbers being down, we managed over £10,000profit, a record-breaking result. I think I have already managed to thankeveryone who put so much effort into making the Holly Fair so magical(and profitable!) but I am delighted to be able to report that we have anew Holly Fair Coordinator for 2013, Maggie Knottenbelt, so watch outfor further tweaks and innovations. We are still in need of enthusiasticvolunteers to help us with coordinating the Holly Fair Raffle so pleaseemail us at alleynsparentsassociation@alleyns.org.uk if you would liketo be involved. The Lent term is always, thankfully, a little bit quieter for the APA but thatdoes not mean that we are resting on our laurels. The end of January sawthe first-ever Upper School Curry Night (below), ably organised byLucy Parry, Upper School Rep. Coordinator, and her team of HouseReps. Year 12 and 13 parents enjoyed a lovely evening of curry and chatin the welcoming surroundings of the Edward Alleyn Club, where the foodwas plentiful and the drink exceptionally reasonably priced! The APA isdelighted to subsidise evenings such as these so that ticket prices canremain affordable, and we are very much hoping to encourage other yeargroups to engage in this kind of activity, so please do suggest it to yourHouse or Class Rep. if you think it would be something that your yeargroup would enjoy.Of course, the hot ticket of the Lent term is always Quiz Night (bottom),and this year was no exception. It seems that competition for tickets getsincreasingly fierce as each year passes; however, we were delighted towelcome quite a few Lower School parent tables to this year’s Quiz, which is as it should be. Our extraordinary team, headed by Anne-MarieLawlor, ensured that the evening ran like clockwork, and, as always, thequestions were challenging, the challenges were challenging, the chilliwas filling and the drink free-flowing. Enormous thanks must go to Anne-Marie, of course, but also to our charming and charismatic QuizmasterEdward Watson, our very game panel of markers – Jocie West, SharonO’Connor, Ruth Grover, Martha Jones and Helen Allen, ably directed byHead Judge Charlotte Hindle – and to Paul Raikes for once again runningthe bar and supplying us with such an excellent choice of wine, beer, softdrinks and nibbles. We had a particularly efficient contingent of SixthFormers this year, who acted as both waiters and runners (and cleaneruppers)and a special mention and thanks should go to Izzy Watson, forinputting the scores and generally being our techie on the night. Oh, anda valedictory for one of our most treasured helpers: after many years oforganising the ticketing and allocating the tables – a plate-spinning job ifever there was one – Julie Jones is retiring from the Committee in orderto enjoy, in relative peace, her final year as a parent at Alleyn’s. We willmiss her hugely, but she will still be around to share her expertise, so ifanyone fancies stepping into her shoes, you will be guaranteed a placeon a table for Quiz Nights to come! The second and final Headmaster’s Lunch (above) of the year tookplace at the very beginning of March and was, as always, a delightfullycivilised social occasion, where the Headmaster, the SMT (SeniorManagement Team), teachers and parents spent a couple of hoursenjoying a specially prepared meal and wide-ranging discourse. We arevery grateful to Dr Savage for taking time out of his busy schedule tocontinue this lovely tradition, and to the School, particularly Sue Miles, for organising it so seamlessly. I should reiterate, once again, that theselunches are open to all parents, so to be added to the future guest listplease email us. As the lunches are relatively exclusive (in numbers only)and only happen twice a year, it may take a little while for an invite tocome through – all the more reason not to wait until your child is in theSixth Form to express interest! Finally, we round out the term with the APA/School sponsored First AidCourse. Again, we have a new Coordinator, Jane Dell, and so enthusiasticwas the response this year that we have managed to find dates for and fill, two courses – another first! The First Aid courses are open to all parents, who simply have to respond to the email and pay a nominal sum to securetheir place. Having attended one myself a few years back, I can attestthat it was a very worthwhile couple of evenings, though I am not sure Iremember all the relevant instructions – perhaps a refresher is in order! As always, we look forward to a very busy Trinity term, where some ofthe events we await with anticipation include the Second Hand UniformSale, the New Parents’ Evening and, of course, Founder’s Day, where wecheerfully man the barbecue (Year 7s) and the raffle (Year 8s). We are alsohoping to have a summer social event, so watch this space (or moreimportantly, your Alleyn’s Post) for more details! I hope you will join us,as a participant and/or volunteer, in one or many of the enjoyableactivities we have in store.Until then, have a lovely Easter break.Robin Tottenham, Chair, Alleyn’s Parents’ Associationalleynsparentssassociation@alleyns.org.uk 020 7274 3397Membership of the Alleyn’s Parents’ Association is open to allparents or guardians of pupils or former pupils, and to all otherswho subscribe to the aims of the Association: to encouragecommunication and relationships through social and educationalactivities and, by supporting the parents and the School, toadvance the education of the pupils attending it.A L L E Y N ’ S S C H O O L N E W S L E T T E R L E N T T E R M 2 0 1 3 1 9
