called the Franklin. Took 6 weeks & 5 days to get to New Orleans.1836 – Nov. 28, traveled from New Orleans to St. Lewis MO. On a steam boat named the GeorgeCollier.1836 – Dec. 11, they arrived at New Orleans just before Christmas. Worked on the farm <strong>of</strong> a leadingcitizen, Colonel John O’Fallon.1837 - They were shocked that blacks were treated as slaves and decided to move across the river toPittsfield, Pike County, Illinois in the fall <strong>of</strong> 1837 & buy a farm <strong>of</strong> 40 acres part prairie & part timber.1840 – The family is living at Spring Creek Township, Pike County, Illinois. The Budds and JohnFenn newly married to Mary <strong>Jory</strong> lived near<strong>by</strong>.1846 – <strong>James</strong> Jr. married Sarah Ann Budd, one <strong>of</strong> three sisters marrying into the family.Sarah was b. in Yipsalanti, MI on Dec. 31, 1827. Her parents were Aaron & Phoebe Ogden Budd.Sara was Methodist & <strong>James</strong> Jr. also joined her church.1846 – <strong>James</strong> Jr. bought the the original farm <strong>of</strong> 40 acres at or before this time, while <strong>James</strong> <strong>Sr</strong>. movedto a farm in Mt. Sterling, Brown Co. about 40 miles away. The <strong>Jory</strong>’s were doing well financially,however <strong>James</strong> Jr. was afraid <strong>of</strong> Malaria which was prevalent in the county. He talked his entirefamily to move to <strong>Oregon</strong>, except Henry.<strong>1847</strong> - In spring they went west on the <strong>Oregon</strong> Trail. The captain <strong>of</strong> the train was Captain JosephMagone. <strong>James</strong> <strong>Jory</strong> Jr. agreed to meet his father & brothers at Independence, but was unable to locatethem when he got there. He went on without them & the families reunited at Umatilla.<strong>1847</strong> – Phoebe Ann is born on the trail at Burnt River near present day Farewell Bend, OR on Sept.13. (Her birthdate suggests that she could have been born at Burnt Ranch in Wyoming. – SandyFrediani)<strong>1847</strong> - They arrived in <strong>Oregon</strong> City in Dec. 25. Their first home is a log cabin on what is nowCommercial St., two blocks from the Ladd & Bush bank (in 1929). They spent the first winter with anewborn in Salem. <strong>James</strong> worked as a mechanic that winter.1849 – <strong>James</strong> Jr goes to California to mine gold for several months. He was “reasonably successful.”He made $1100 in gold dust. John Fenn, Thomas & William <strong>Jory</strong> were also on the trip.
