He served as justice <strong>of</strong> the peace for four years. He was amember <strong>of</strong> the Good Templars and held membership in the Methodist church <strong>of</strong> Salem,to which his wife also belongs. Because <strong>of</strong> his long residence in <strong>Oregon</strong> he witnessedmuch <strong>of</strong> the growth and up building <strong>of</strong> Salem and this part <strong>of</strong> the state. S. <strong>Jory</strong> Passes Away After Several Months Illness--Was WellKnown--Hugh Steven <strong>Jory</strong> died at his home on South commercial street yesterday at theage <strong>of</strong> 78 years, after an illness that had gradually enfeebled him for several months past.Mr. <strong>Jory</strong> was one <strong>of</strong> the early pioneers <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong>, coming to this state in <strong>1847</strong>. He wasborn at St. Johns, New Brunswick, November 28, 1833, and in 1853 was married to MissMary Budd, who survives him. He was one <strong>of</strong> six brothers to come west and one <strong>of</strong> threeto marry three sisters, the Budd girls. Two <strong>of</strong> his brothers survive him--Thomas <strong>Jory</strong>, 87years <strong>of</strong> age, who lives in South Salem, and William <strong>Jory</strong>, age 82 years, <strong>of</strong> the Red Hills.Two children also survive him, Charles <strong>of</strong> Stockton, California, and Oliver <strong>of</strong> this city.Two children, Allie and Ralph, were drowned in the Willamette river in 1879. He was amember <strong>of</strong> the Good Templars and was once active in the Grange. Four years ago heretired from active mechanical labor, but was still a busy man until he began to sufferfrom stomach trouble a few months ago. His son, Charles <strong>Jory</strong>, is expected fromCalifornia for the funeral, which will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Leslie Methodistchurch in South Salem. The services will be conducted <strong>by</strong> Rev. W. S. Gordon <strong>of</strong>Woodburn, who was a former pastor at the Leslie church. May 11, 1913 & buried at Lyons, Linn Co., OR. She came to <strong>Oregon</strong> in 1877.
