It’s a wrap for RAAP <strong>2011</strong>
<strong>QFRS</strong> Road Attitudes and Action
Planning (RAAP) program presenters
have enjoyed another successful year
reaching out to senior high school
students and educating them that with
their new-found freedom comes the
responsibility to be safe and responsible
on our roads.
RAAP presenters around the state drove
their message through to almost 30 000
Year 12 students in <strong>2011</strong>, giving them an
insight to what happens in a road crash,
the aftermath and the effects on
victims and their families.
In Queensland, 17-24-yearolds
account for 27 per
cent of all road fatalities,
despite making up only
11 per cent of licence
holders.
The RAAP program is
a statewide initiative run
by <strong>QFRS</strong> targeting novice and
pre-licenced drivers, as well as
passengers. The program is designed
to reinforce in young drivers the need to
‘Plan Ahead’.
Firefighters visit schools to conduct
an interactive multi<strong>media</strong> presentation
which explores the causes of crashes and
explains <strong>QFRS</strong>’s role.
The program seeks to provide positive
outcomes and influence behaviours by
encouraging students to discuss their
attitudes to driving and adopt strategies to
stay safe in potentially risky situations.
RAAP State Coordinator Peter Derges
said the presenters have done a fantastic
job communicating to young adults
embarking on a journey into the real world.
‘What these presenters provided to
the students was a real-life and first-hand
experience of what they have seen at crash
sites and a genuine plea to the students to
be safe on our roads,’ Peter said.
roads, attitudes and
action planning
‘There is no masking the passion
these presenters have for the cause and
the students pick up on this.
‘The presentation comes from the
heart and that is why you see the
students and teachers getting emotional.
They truly relate to and bond with the
presenters and that is what makes the
program work.
“It is a proactive approach to educate
students before they get themselves into
trouble. Regardless of whether they are in
a car, on a pushbike or just walking along
the road, the message is to be aware of
your surroundings,’ he said.
