The day is held to honour the memory of firefighter and enthusiastic <strong>social</strong> golfer Chris ‘Warby’ Warburton, who died while fighting a boarding house fire 22 years ago. The day’s top prize – the Warby Day Shield - went to Bill Miller, Kevin Stevenson, Alistair Thompson, Drew Argent and Clinton Argent, while the Wally Belcher Shield for the highest-scoring allfirefighter team was won by Rod Coombes, Dave Werner, Kim Llewellyn and Tony McGregor. From left: Wally Belcher Shield winners Tony McGregor, Kim Llewellyn, Dave Werner and Rod Coombes Rob Boniwell (left) and Craig Smith (right) with Jennifer Russel, Ulrika Herold and Gemma Thorpe of Aramac State School Firefighters from the Brisbane, South West and South East regions helped out Central Region crews around Barcaldine in October when more than one million hectares of land were affected by bushfire. <strong>QFRS</strong> Brisbane Area Commander Rob Boniwell said local residents made the job a lot easier for the <strong>QFRS</strong> task force, which used more than 20 urban and rural appliances as well as three water-bombing and two fire-spotting aircraft and resources from the local council, Queensland Parks and Wildlife and primary producer brigades to fight the fires. ‘The fires covered a huge area, but <strong>QFRS</strong> crews worked well to protect persons and structures, ensuring no one was hurt and no homesteads were lost,’ Rob said. ‘The mobilisation of the task force reinforced the multi-agency approach to wildfire management with urban and rural crews working alongside each other to achieve their objectives.’ ‘An essential part of the demobilisation procedure is to ensure we leave a positive impression on the local community. To ensure this happened, we visited all those members of the community that had supported us throughout the campaign, passing on our appreciation on behalf of the <strong>QFRS</strong>. ‘The response from the community was overwhelming. Everyone wanted to step in and help, especially the homestead residents, who were kind enough to house and feed <strong>QFRS</strong> crews.
