Air Masses• In the middle latitudes, most weather patterns are theresult of the movements of large bodies of air, called airmasses.• An air mass is a large body of air, usually 1600kilometers or more across and perhaps severalkilometers thick, which is characterized by homogeneousphysical properties (in particular, temperature andmoisture content) at any given altitude.• A region under the influence of an air mass will probablyexperience generally constant weather conditions, asituation referred to as air mass weather.
