The useof services ranging from basic SMS to thelatest connectivity platforms like WiMAX todeliver ICT education sets <strong>Globe</strong> apart asthere is no other company and no other CSRprogram in the Philippines that rivals the useof technology-based programs.At the end of 2010, <strong>Globe</strong> hasconnected 2,012 public schools, the mostnumber of internet installations set up byany telecommunications company in thePhilippines. Of the total, 1,954 are publichigh schools while 58 are public elementaryschools, evidently showing the Company’ssignificant contribution in bringing technologyto the educational system. The <strong>Globe</strong>ISP program is conducted in partnershipwith the Department of Education internetConnectivity Project, Gearing Up InternetLiteracy and Access for Students (GILAS)consortium and USAID-Growth with Equity inMindanao’s Computer Literacy and InternetConnection (CLIC) project.The program exposes students toa wealth of information and allows themto develop superior math, science andlanguage skills through various multimedialearningtools.The internet has proven to be a usefultool for the schools, as a resounding majorityof teachers in <strong>Globe</strong>-connected schoolsregistered improvements in students’performance and interest in taking ICT-relatedcourses in college.For instance, drop out rates inConsolacion National High School inConsolacion, Cebu decreased due to thepresence of internet learning. Web-basedactivities also helped Consolacion teacherslighten up their load since they have to teachfive classes daily with an average of 70students per class.Aside from popular broadband servicesDSL and WiFi, <strong>Globe</strong> also deploys WiMAX, inselect public and secondary schools.WiMAX is a next-generation fixedwireless broadband technology that <strong>Globe</strong>launched last year to provide Filipinoconsumers with an affordable and reliableat-home internet service in areas not coveredby traditional wired internet solutions, withspeeds much faster than many other athomebroadband services. Through WiMAX’slarger coverage and higher bandwidthperformance, internet connectivity becameavailable even in remote rural areas.Working together with the DICP, the<strong>Globe</strong> ISP has provided millions of Filipinostudents and teachers the confidencein using digital media as a key skill thatenables participation in the information andknowledge society.Complementing connectivity for publicschools, <strong>Globe</strong> also provides free internetconnectivity to learning centers such asthe Filipinas Heritage Library – one of thecountry’s leading repository of Filipinianareferences which benefit students andprofessionals doing research on Philippinehistory and culture.55
