Owen Lewis, Chief Executive<strong>of</strong> the Sustainable Energy Authority <strong>of</strong> Ireland (SEAI) whooutlined Ireland’s competitive advantages in the field <strong>of</strong>sustainable energy and discussed the need to improveenergy efficiency and harness the opportunities presentedby cleantech and Ireland’s natural resources. Speakingat the AGM Mr Mullins said that, “It is vitally importantfor all businesses and citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cork</strong> to be led by aNew Economic Vision for the Region. We have had as acommunity enough negativity over the last number <strong>of</strong>years and we must engage with all stakeholders includingin particular the New Government to emphasise the greateconomic potential present in the <strong>Cork</strong> Region which isready to be unlocked.”He went on to say that his focus during his Presidencywould be on:• The continued promotion <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Cork</strong> Region as aninvestment location• Engaging with Government and all stakeholders tosupport economic development• Ensuring the <strong>Chamber</strong> continued to support all itsmembers with an emphasis on small business whichrequire significant support at this time• Developing a New Economic Vision for <strong>Cork</strong> with localCouncils and AgenciesHe particularly highlighted the importance <strong>of</strong> thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> The North and South Docklands, theconstruction <strong>of</strong> a Convention Centre and the establishment<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Cork</strong> Science, Innovation and Technology Park as keyeconomic anchors to recovery and growth.He stated, “The <strong>Cork</strong> <strong>Chamber</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> the oldest andbest established chambers in the country and it is a veryproud honour for me to be elected President at this time.I hope that I can provide strong leadership at a time wheneconomic vision and more importantly its implementationwill be important for the shopkeeper and the CEO.” “It isvitally important also that during my term in <strong>of</strong>fice thatthe <strong>Chamber</strong> develops a renewed focus on employmentby supporting internships and temporary/permanentplacements amongst our members. The development <strong>of</strong>a Skills Register as part <strong>of</strong> our online service will assist thisprocess”.He concluded by saying that, “I wish to congratulate GerO’Mahoney for his excellent leadership as President overthe last two years and I look forward to his continuedsupport. INTERNATIONAL tradeRenewable Energy & CleantechOpportunities for <strong>Cork</strong> CompaniesOn Tuesday 10 May, the Enterprise Europe Network, inassociation with the Embassy <strong>of</strong> Finland and the FinnishBusiness Club, hosted an information and networkingseminar focusing on opportunities for business innovationco-operation between Ireland and Finland in therenewable energy and cleantech sectors.Keynote speaker was Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Mari Pantsar-Kallio, NationalProgramme Director <strong>of</strong> the Finnish Cleantech Cluster inLahti, who outlined the key areas <strong>of</strong> focus for the FinnishCleantech Cluster. The model for the cluster itself wasbased on the success <strong>of</strong> NOKIA’s clustering strategyin Finland. The cluster has also established dedicatedinternational networks that unite companies in the sectorin order to strengthen Finland’s <strong>of</strong>fering in internationalmarkets.Dr Valerie Cummins, Director <strong>of</strong> MERC³ outlined themission <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cork</strong>’s Maritime and Energy Research Campusand Commercial Cluster in Ringaskiddy, highlighting theexpertise that the centre has in the areas <strong>of</strong> wind and waveenergy and the huge opportunity that Ireland currentlyhas to become a leader in exploiting wave energy <strong>of</strong>f ourcoastline.Finally, Dr Andrew Walsh, Managing Director <strong>of</strong> CelticBioEnergy gave details <strong>of</strong> the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> bioenergyplants. Since the scheme started,eight <strong>Chamber</strong> member companies have committed to funding an undergraduate student through their four year scienceor engineering course in UCC or CIT. Companies that have already sponsored a student include: Bord Gáis, Carbon Group,ConocoPhillips, Eli Lilly, EMC, FMC International, RPS Consulting Engineers and Millipore.The <strong>Chamber</strong> is looking for ongoing support for theBursary Scheme. The requested commitment is as follows:• Companies interested in supporting the scheme areasked to contribute €1,500 per year for the duration<strong>of</strong> a four-year course (i.e. a total cost <strong>of</strong> €6,000 overthe course <strong>of</strong> four years).
