Previous policieshave not recognised the huge diversity among the 19 ports thathandle commercial freight and according to the Minister, thenew ports policy aims to encourage a shift “from a ‘one size fits all’policy to one that recognises that different ports have differentroles to play, now and in the future.”In recognising the different roles <strong>of</strong> each port, the new portspolicy identifies:• Dublin Port Company, the Port <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cork</strong> Company andShannon Foynes Port as Tier 1 Ports <strong>of</strong> NationalSignificance• Rosslare Europort and the Port <strong>of</strong> Waterford Company as Tier2 Ports <strong>of</strong> National Significance• The remaining 14 ports (which account for 18% <strong>of</strong> nationaltrade) as Ports <strong>of</strong> Regional Significance but which alsohave national significance in terms <strong>of</strong> specialist servicesor products. These include the five State companies atDrogheda, Dún Laoghaire, Galway, New Ross and Wicklow.The new policy aims to harness the potential <strong>of</strong> every port inIreland. Shareholders will be encouraged to take an activistapproach to managing their ports to ensure the State gets bestvalue from these crucial facilities, whether that shareholder isthe Government or the local authority. The National Ports Policywill also allow for appropriate private-sector investment in ports.A new performance oversight system, and a new approach tocapacity planning, will be developed to make sure that all portsare fulfilling their potential.Launch <strong>of</strong> 2013 Local Government Environment Improvement Schemes:<strong>Cork</strong> City Council has recently launched two new schemes - the Painting Grant Scheme and Architectural Conservation Area - to assistbusinesses in renovating/upgrading the exterior <strong>of</strong> their business premises. These schemes will contribute to the overall maintainenceand upkeep <strong>of</strong> city centre areas and add to the attractiveness <strong>of</strong> the environs for those working and living in the city centre. <strong>Cork</strong>County Council have also recently extended their 'adopt a road' scheme to incorporateroundabouts. The 'Adopt a Road/Roudabout'scheme also aims to improvethe local environment by enabling businesses to sponsor the landscaping/maintenance <strong>of</strong> a roundaboutin their area, a support which is acknowledged through the inclusion <strong>of</strong> business name/logo signage on the newly upgradedroundabout. Further details are included below:• <strong>Cork</strong> City Council Painting Grant Scheme 2013<strong>Cork</strong> City Council has announced details <strong>of</strong> its Painting GrantScheme Grant Scheme 2013 which assists buildingowners/occupiers invest in the appearance and maintenance<strong>of</strong> historic buildings, and also helps improve the character,appearance and overall attractiveness <strong>of</strong> these historic andvalued areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cork</strong> City. These grant schemes focus on <strong>Cork</strong>’shistoric City Centre including Gerald Griffin Street, ShandonStreet, North Main Street, South Main Street and Barrack Street.Grants are available up to a maximum <strong>of</strong> 50% <strong>of</strong> the totalcost <strong>of</strong> the external painting works up to a maximum <strong>of</strong>€600. However, should an owner wish to carry out the paintingthemselves, <strong>Cork</strong> City Council will meet 100% <strong>of</strong> the cost <strong>of</strong>materials up to a maximum <strong>of</strong> €300. The seminar focussed on the growing andinfluential global market that is China, the world’s largest exporterand manufacturer.
