Professor Walker has developed the varietywhich produces high levels of the plant alkaloid galanthamine, which hasproven effective in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The plant also containsnarciclasine, an exciting new treatment for brain tumours. Although bulbs willnot be available in commercial quantities for several years, he has generouslydonated some that have been planted in the Master’s Garden and has offeredsome to be raffled at the Alumni Day in September.
