Roxanne has dabbled in the arts since she was a child, and since retirementhas more fully immersed herself in the pursuit. She works in pastels and oils, and hasexhibited in juried exhibitions throughout Wisconsin.Roxanne has generously donatedShivering Sands Sunset to be auctionedoff at the Land Trust’s AnnualMembership Gathering on August 25.Shivering Sands Sunset, oil on canvas,16” x 20,” $750 value“I have loved these old logging paths ever since we bought our property on GliddenDrive in 1998. Never questioning who owned the trails that bordered our land, I happilytrespassed in all seasons, even (quite foolishly) in the fall when hunters stalk the trails.My own time was spent admiring the incredible diversity of trees, watching indigobuntings in early summer and picking thimbleberries in the fall. In winter the layers ofpine needles and sections of flat, deeply fissured limestone are covered with snow, but thetrails are still easily navigated in boots or on cross-country skis. Weathered piles of logsoffer a comfortable seat for bird-watching or sketching. Wide, open meadows punctuatethe forested paths, and when the wind is out of the east the distant sound of waves can beheard from the shore of Lake Michigan.The scene I have painted is some distance through the woods directly in back ofour house when the late afternoon sun was filtering through the trees. I had done afew painted studies of the nearby cedars with their clusters of rusty cones, and in lateOctober took some digital photographs for painting references. My goal was to capturethe essence of this incredibly rich section of forest, with its cedars and white pine, anoccasional spruce, here and there a maple, a lone birch tree back in the distance. Alongthe path the leaves of the thimbleberries have turned yellow and gold, and the sunlightmakes its own path through the screen of trees.”Thank you, Roxanne, for donating this beautifulpainting to benefit land preservation in Door County!31
