SESSION I : COASTAL SHIPPINGB O M B AY C H A M B E RINDIAN <strong>PORT</strong>S & SHIPPING 2011Coastal Shipping <strong>and</strong> Inl<strong>and</strong> Waterways:The Missing Links in Maritime DevelopmentABOUT CONFERENCEhe <strong>Bombay</strong> <strong>Chamber</strong> strongly felt the need toadvocate issues relating to coastal shippingT<strong>and</strong> inl<strong>and</strong> waterways development whichaccount for a mere 1% <strong>of</strong> all cargo movement in India,despite being most economical <strong>and</strong> environmentfriendly mode <strong>of</strong> transport. Coastal Shipping <strong>and</strong>Inl<strong>and</strong> waterways transportation network couldsignificantly reduce logistic costs <strong>and</strong> curbs issuesrelating to l<strong>and</strong> acquisitions.While a beginning has been made by declaring fiveroutes as National Waterways, enormous investmentswill be required to realize the sector's true potential.Therefore, there is a need for <strong>Industry</strong> to get together<strong>and</strong> engage with the State Governments <strong>and</strong> theGovernment <strong>of</strong> India to provide an enablingatmosphere for large investments in the sector.
