SESSION I : COASTAL SHIPPINGB O M B AY C H A M B E RINDIAN PORTS & SHIPPING 2011Coastal Shipping and Inland Waterways:The Missing Links in Maritime DevelopmentABOUT CONFERENCEhe Bombay Chamber strongly felt the need toadvocate issues relating to coastal shippingTand inland waterways development whichaccount for a mere 1% of all cargo movement in India,despite being most economical and environmentfriendly mode of transport. Coastal Shipping andInland waterways transportation network couldsignificantly reduce logistic costs and curbs issuesrelating to land acquisitions.While a beginning has been made by declaring fiveroutes as National Waterways, enormous investmentswill be required to realize the sector's true potential.Therefore, there is a need for Industry to get togetherand engage with the State Governments and theGovernment of India to provide an enablingatmosphere for large investments in the sector.
