May (cont)SUN 12TH: (Doors 5pm, show 6pm & Doors 8pm, show 9pm (2 shows) / £40.00 - £55.00)THE LEGENDARYCOUNT BASIE ORCHESTRADirected by DENNIS MACKRELFRI 10TH - SAT 11TH: (Doors 6.00pm & 10.30pm (two shows) / £38.00 - £60.00)MICHEL CAMILOTRIOMichel Camilo (pno), Lincoln Goines (bs), Cliff Almond (drs).A fiery, high-powered virtuoso pianist, composer and bandleader,Michel Camilo comes from a musical family (all nine of his unclesare musicians). Originally playing accordion, he switched to pianowhen he was 16. After moving to New York in 1979, his song"Why Not?" became a hit for the Manhattan Transfer and caughton as a standard, and "Caribe" entered the repertoire of DizzyGillespie. In addition he is a chart-topping producer; a Grammy,Latin Grammy and Emmy award winner who flavours his tuneswith the spice of Caribbean rhythms and jazz harmonies.A hugely rare appearance by this fabled band - The Count Basie Orchestrais a “big band phenomenon that has become a tradition”. Directed byDrummer Dennis Mackrel, their unique sound combining blues and swingwith an intensity and rhythm all their own, is and always has beenimmediately recognizable. For over half a century they have been generatingthrills in concert halls, universities, nightclubs and festivals around the globe. When Basie passed away in 1984, the guys decided to stay together and theirsaxophonist/arranger Frank Foster led the group for a number of years, followed by trombonist Grover Mitchell and alumni trombonist, Bill Hughes. The orchestra creates both nostalgic joy and rocking sound for theiraudiences, with traditional charts, some newer ones and state-of-the-artsolos by every musician in the 17-piece ensemble. Mackrel has maintainedthe Basie tradition while at the same time bringing in his own unique qualitiesas a leader and musical force and the combination of old timers from theoriginal band and young guys with a real flair for their instruments assurescontinuity while keeping the band as fresh as it was in Basie’s hey day.SUN 12TH JAZZ LUNCH: (Doors 12pm, Show 1pm / £15.00 - £18.00)ELAINE DELMAR WITH THE BRIAN DEEQUARTET FEATURING JIM MULLENClassy British jazz singer accompanied by a superb piano-led quartetfeaturing the great Jim Mullen on guitar.
