If anyone is interested in helping out with thegarden please email natacha.brochard@oxley.nsw.edu.au.Congratulations to:Oxley team at Goulburn CourthouseThe Mock Trial Competition is conducted by the Law Society ofNSW and is a way of introducing students to law as well asincreasing understanding of the basis of our judicial system. The competition helps students to increase basic skills such aslistening, speaking, writing, reading and analysing. The goal isnot to win for the sake of winning, but to learn and understandthe meaning of good citizenship through participation in oursystem of law and justice. All who participate in the Mock TrialCompetition are winners in this sense. Each team consists of six students who play the roles ofbarristers, lawyers and witnesses. The Law Society also provides'the case' for the mock trials. The cases are confined to simplecriminal and civil matters heard in the Local or District Court.A team may act as either the defence or prosecution during atrial, with each team member taking on the role of a barrister, solicitor, court officer or witness, pitting their skills against theopposing side - a team from another school. Each trial is presided over by a Magistrate (a solicitor or barristerwho will be allocated by the Law Society), who awards marks toeach team based on a range of criteria, such as openingaddresses, closing submissions and cross examinations. Theteam with the highest mark wins the trial. This week our Mock Trial team consisting of Barristers: JackMoran and Victoria Fay, Solicitor: Alice Callaghan, Witnesses:Laura Farag and Susannah Newton, Court officer: NyssaBunyan, Helpers: Stephanie Obermann and James Guy went tothe historic Goulburn Court House to compete against SacredHeart Central, Cootamundra.
