WMFE: Bringing the Future into FocusThis is a prologue to a remarkable chronicle about WMFE’sjourney toward greater potential and new leadership. Two landscape-changing issues were in my viewfinderthroughout 2005 – succession, and a new vision forWMFE’s future. Succession will play out in 2006; and, ideally, your additional financial support will bring the newprogram vision into sharp focus in 2007.First, if you are a close observer of this and previousannual report formats, you will note a new face and titlealongside that of WMFE’s board chair. It’s a new Presidentfor WMFE!On my recommendation José A. Fajardo was unanimouslyelected by WMFE’s governing board as my successor. Hebecame President in 2006 after faithfully and successfullyadvancing WMFE’s mission over the previous nine yearsas a result of the many titles he held during that time. TheChief Executive Officer title stays with me for 2006, andthen we expect that title to be added to José’s in 2007when I conclude my 35-year run as WMFE’s CEO.Fittingly, the success and accomplishments described inthis report were led internally by José, and externally byBoard Chair Joy Barrett Sabol. It’s appropriate, then, thatthey tell you about these milestones. Certainly and quickly, they will give credit to many others; yet, they have therightful standing to be your messenger!Second, 2005 brought a new vision for WMFE’s future. It’s a vision you and hundreds of other stakeholdersfocused upon as WMFE celebrated its40 th anniversary. Now, all that’s left todo with the vision is fund it and setit out for you to view, listen to andconsume sometime in 2007. We willbe fully engaged in the funding processthroughout 2006 and we will touchupon pieces of the vision in this report.Sincerely,Stephen McKenney SteckChief Executive OfficerFor now, it’s José and Joy’s words tochronicle 2005. Maybe they’ll let meback for the epilogue next year!2Leadership LetterWMFE’s 40 th year was celebrated with incredibleaccomplishments. Fiscal year 2005 (October 2004 –September 2005) saw the launch of four digital televisionchannels; budgetary goals not only reached but exceeded;more than 10 successful events, including our first OpenHouse in 10 years; enhanced audio streaming on wmfe.org; and landmark national programming and compellinglocal productions from both WMFE-TV and 90.7 WMFE-FM.In addition to highlights of WMFE’s achievements, this2005 Annual Report brings WMFE’s future into focus. Avision, as Steve mentioned in his prologue, you helpedfashion and a vision on which we will call upon you tofinancially support.WMFE’s past and future successes would not be possiblewithout exceptional collection of lay leaders and staffcommitted to bringing you enriching, entertaining andeducational programming and outstanding service. Wethank each of them for their continued hard work anddedication. We also thank the WMFE Board of Trustees, CommunityAdvisory Board and the Cornerstone Society AdvisoryCouncil for giving so generously of their time. Focused on FundingWMFE’s Membership, Major Gifts and ProgramSponsorship sectors ended a very demanding fiscalyear with gains in all areas. And, each sector exceededour budgeted goals!Members giving in amounts between $25 and $999generated $2.8 million compared to theprevious year of $2.3 million, an increaseof 11 percent.Other members giving what we call“major gifts,” $1,000 or more, gave$295,000 compared with the previous year of$262,000, an increase of 12.5 percent.Compelling programming on WMFE led to a significantgrowth of almost 4,000 more members, allowing thestations to enjoy an annual member count of 26,251,an increase of 17 percent! Due to a new renewalstrategy, renewal membership rates increased by ninepercent.Local businesses in Central Florida sponsored thebroadcast of many of the programs you watch orlisten to on WMFE. Many others helped sponsor themission-related community events you attended. These businesses and organizations contributed morethan $2 million in event sponsorship, on-air programsponsorship, as well as print advertising in For MembersOnly. On air sponsorship and print advertising supportended the year $98,022 ahead of its record goal of$1.3 million, an increase of 20 percent over last year.We salute the efforts of our supporters whoresponded to our appeals to contact their U.S.House of Representatives. Your calls encouragingthe continued support of federal funding for publicbroadcasting worked. Thank you!Focused on Serving You and OurCommunityDuring fiscal year 2005 WMFE introduced severalmission and program oriented events. Focused on Quality NationalTelevision ProgrammingThis year was particularly vexing for WMFE-TV dueto fewer high-profile PBS series to attract viewers.Interestingly, while the number of WMFE membersrose, viewership declined slightly yielding a monthlyaverage of 476,750 households watching WMFE-TVduring all day-parts. However, viewing in prime time– from 8 to 11 p.m. – increased slightly.WMFE-TV broadcast severallandmark programs that reflectedyour expectation for the station toalways achieve a higher standard inour program schedule. As partof WMFE’s 40 thanniversary project,A Vision for Our Future was produced in a logicalway: briefly recalling where WMFE has been in itsfirst 40 years and then, rather than spending selfcongratulating time looking backward, we choseto look forward to a renewed commitment toprogramming that you and others in the communitytold WMFE is important to realize our potential.
