New Engraverfor Narrow-Web Printingin Series Productioncompiled by Laura Wayland-Smith HatchThe HelioKlischograph Compact, a manualengraving machine for narrow-web printing,has begun series production at HELL’s Kiel plant.With a maximum face width of 1,200 mm, the machinecan accommodate cylinders from 200 to 1,200 mm incircumference. Its HelioSprint high-performance andHelical engraving provide the speed today’s customersrequire. The first shipment occurred in November2002.The single-channel engraving machine is PC controlledwith a Windows 2000 operating system. The drivebearing block is fixed. Tailstock and engraving supportare moved manually. The machine bed, engravingcarriage, and bearing blocks are cast metal parts. Thehigh-precision linear guides are hardened and polished.The Compact engraves TIFF complete forms (cylinderlayouts) that can be generated using standard DTPapplications such as Illustrator, Freehand, Corel Draw,Photoshop, QuarkXPress, etc. Direct output as TIFFengraving data is possible from these applications insome cases; in others, additional RIP software is required.Data transfer is via data media (CD) or a network.The Compact engraves screens over a nominal rangeof 40 to 148 l/cm, which effectively corresponds to ascreen area of 32 to 210 l/cm. It engraves as standardusing HELL’s low-color-shift standard angles 0, 2, 3,4. As an optional function, freely selectable anglesbetween 30° and 65° can also be engraved. All engravingparameters such as screen, screen angle, and gradationcan be stored and archived. Engraving jobs can also beprinted out with all production-related data. Engravingson the Compact, K405, and K500 are compatible.Both polar line (step over) and helical engraving (spiral)are supported by the Compact. Polar line engraving hasadvantages for precise reproduction, particularly withseamless jobs. Helical engraving is over 30 percentfaster than polar line engraving.The Compact can also be fitted with the HandyCammeasuring camera, a manually operated camera forrecording, storing, and analyzing engraved cells. Thecamera image is displayed and analyzed on the Compact’soperating monitor. The measured values are transferredautomatically to the CellGuard Processor software, sothat the engraving amplifier can be set.CellGuard Processor software simplifies Helio operation,setting the engraving amplifier after the operator hasinput the target and actual values of the engraving cells.Hollow and shaft cylinders can be mounted between theHELL combi-pivots by moving the tailstock manually.The axial clamping force is generated using a tensionlever on the tailstock.This “mini HelioKlischograph” was designed for the Asianmarket, but is valid for smaller users anywhere in theworld who want to do their own engraving and providesan inexpensive springboard to electromechanicalengraving.52GRAVURE/June 2003
