<strong>N2</strong> <strong>Series</strong><br />
Life<br />
Acme Screw Life: Usable life for an acme screw is defined as the length of<br />
travel completed before backlash (of leadscrew/nut) exceeds 0.020 inches<br />
[0.5 mm]. A travel life of 1 million inches under the maximum rated load can<br />
be used as a general approximation, however, since wear is directly<br />
dependent on application conditions (load, duty cycle, move profiles and<br />
environment) it is difficult to quantify an accurate travel life.<br />

Precision Linear Actuators<br />
<strong>N2</strong> <strong>Series</strong> actuators are available with three motor types to meet a<br />
variety of application requirements.<br />
• The <strong>N2</strong>-D family features a cost effective 24 VDC motor. When<br />
combined with D2400 control, the complete system provides<br />
simple extend–retract motion, positioning to pre-determined<br />
stopping locations, or positioning to an analog voltage command;<br />
all at the lowest installed cost.<br />
• The <strong>N2</strong>-T family is a step motor based linear actuator. These<br />
systems are selected for applications that require high load and<br />
duty cycle, in-position holding, open loop operation, repeatable<br />
positioning to 0.0005 inches [0.013 mm] and maintenance-free<br />
operation.<br />
• The <strong>N2</strong>-BK <strong>Series</strong> actuators offer very high acceleration and duty<br />
cycle for the most demanding automated motion applications. The<br />
B8961 Servo Drive is designed to optimize the performance of the<br />
brushless servo motor.<br />
All <strong>N2</strong> <strong>Series</strong> actuators are available with several time-proven<br />
options to enhance operation in the industrial environment.<br />
Options include holding brakes, linear potentiometers or encoders<br />
for position feedback, dual rod-end bearings to increase side load<br />
and more. See the end of this section for more information.<br />

How To Order<br />
Steps To Ordering a Complete <strong>N2</strong> System<br />
You are ready to specify an <strong>N2</strong> actuator model number<br />
after you have:<br />
a. Completed and verified all necessary<br />
information on a Thomson Application Analysis<br />
Worksheet on A-6 to A-8.<br />
b. Completed the steps in the <strong>N2</strong> Product Selection<br />
Guidelines.<br />
c. Selected a control that is compatible with the motor.<br />
Your local <strong>Danaher</strong> <strong>Motion</strong> Distributor and our<br />
Applications Engineering Department are<br />
available to help with your selection process.<br />
1. Base Model Number<br />
Select the <strong>N2</strong> model which provides sufficient thrust<br />
and speed for the application, with a comfortable margin<br />
of safety. Refer to the <strong>N2</strong> Speed vs. Thrust curves in<br />
this section. Be sure to consider duty cycle, side load-<br />
ing, back driving, and the other design considerations<br />
from the Thomson Application Data Form.<br />
TN actuators with gear or timing belt drive reductions<br />
have the motor mounted parallel to the lead screw.<br />
With in-line units, the motor is always coupled directly<br />
to the screw shaft, with no reduction.<br />
2. Stroke Length<br />
Seven standard travel lengths are available from 2 to<br />
16.5 inches. Longer lengths and custom<br />
in-between lengths are also available. Consult your<br />
Thomson distributor or the factory for details.<br />
To maximize actuator life, the thrust tube should not<br />
impact either physical end-of-stroke during normal<br />
operation. Extra travel length is needed to decelerate<br />
the load to a stop when an end-of-travel limit switch<br />
is encountered. This extra travel distance depends on<br />
load and speed.<br />

Pivot Mount Caution:<br />
When utilizing a pivot mounting option (MP2 or<br />
MT4) in conjunction with a pivot rod end (FS2<br />
or FC2), it is recommended that the actuator be<br />
extended only to 90–95% of its full stroke. This<br />
increases the system’s rigidity and extends the<br />
life of the guide bearings and rod seal.<br />

-DB Dual Rod End Bearing<br />
Increases side load rating. Reduces actual stroke<br />
length by 1.5 inches.<br />
-EMK Encoder<br />
1000 line incremental encoder mounted on the<br />
rear shaft of the motor.<br />
-F Sub-Freezing Environment<br />
For operation to -20°F. Increases system backlash<br />
to 0.025 inches max.<br />
-H High Temperature<br />
Increases maximum actuator operating<br />
temperature to 180°F. Note: -F and -H are<br />
not compatible.<br />
-L Linear Potentiometer Output<br />
Linear potentiometer mounted inside the TN-B<br />
actuator.<br />
-PB Protective Boot<br />
Protects the thrust tube from solid contaminants<br />
and prevents liquids from entering the actuator<br />
through the rod end bearing. Includes the<br />
-W option. (Not available with –MS1.)<br />
-W Water Resistant Option<br />
Provides protection from light moisture contact<br />
with actuator.<br />
6. Accessories<br />
Magnetic Position Sensors<br />
Position sensors are available for triggering stop,<br />
speed/direction change, or end-of-travel.<br />
To maximize actuator life, Thomson recommends<br />
the use of end-of-travel limit switches with all<br />
actuators.<br />
Either Reed or Hall Effect (NPN transistor)<br />
switches are compatible with Thomson controls.<br />
