2 EDITORIAL By CHARLES FILLINGHAM This term I have had quite a few little projects on the go. School-wise, I am trying to nudge my Fifth Formers a little closer to A* grades at GCSE; I have also been trying to make small inroads into the whole school energy efficiency drive; and, of course, I have taken a great interest in the special edition competition entry issue of The Citizen which has now been sent off for the judges’ THE DIARY thecitizen 16 March 2012 decision next term. Meanwhile, out of school, I have been devoting increasing amounts of time to my latest fitness drive. This time it is not just a new year’s resolution which has lasted longer than a fortnight. There are five weeks until this year’s marathon and I am pleased to say that Dr Khand, from the Physics Department, will be running too. He tells me that his training is picking up quite well and I made it around seventeen miles last Saturday. So we are both hopeful of completing the course. If you are in town on the last Sunday of the Easter holidays do keep an eye out for me and Dr Khand. Neither of us is expecting to win the race, but we’d certainly appreciate an encouraging cheer. If you began a new little project at the beginning of 2012, I hope that you too are making sound progress. PREFECTS ELECTIONS These take place today (Friday 16th March) during Tutor period. Only Junior Sixth boys and Staff can vote. Tutors are asked to return the completed ballot slips by morning break (to the Staff Common Room ballot box) and the list of the thirty elected candidates will be posted outside the Headmaster’s office after 2.40pm on the same day. Any enquiries about the elections should be addressed to Mr Griffin. Building maintenance and repairs At the recent Joint Committee some School Parliament proposals related to repairs and maintenance of the building e.g. door locks, clocks etc. The Second Master suggested that, rather than waiting for the next termly meeting of the Parliament or Committee, he would be happy to receive notification of any building issues directly from pupils as and when a problem was identified. He would then refer these to the Facilities Manager to achieve a speedy resolution of the matter. This was mentioned in Monday’s assembly. Therefore, outside the Second Master’s Office, there is now a box of maintenance request forms which any pupil can fill in and return to Mr Griffin. By adding the pupil’s name, we may be in a better position to ask for greater information about, or clarification to, such a request. The staff have a similar system but they are asked to use the facilities icon on the staff intranet page which ensures requests go directly to Mr Hawson, the Facilities Manager.
Geography students visit Docklands By BILAL THIAM S6OJD On a February Monday morning, the A2 geography students set off for London Docklands and the East End to examine the regeneration schemes of East London. Our journey commenced at the Canary Wharf pier, where Mr. Pike and Mr. Davies outlined the local history of the area. We assessed the commercial regeneration that had begun on the Isle of Dogs in the 1980s and began to compare levels of deprivation in areas where the original residents of the Docklands resided. Once at Cabot Square we took in the full splendour of the area, built to accommodate financial sector services. From this position, we noted as to how global conglomerates such as Credit Suisse and JPMorgan had been enticed into setting up their headquarters in Docklands through various government incentives including tax breaks and infrastructure development. Our trip progressed to Canning Town, where we saw the traditional centres of light industry that used to be the main form Emirates Stadium First Form trip By LOUIS PHILLIPS 1A On Monday 23rd January, the whole of the First Form went on a trip to the Emirates stadium in Highbury. The trip was hosted by the Geography Department, accompanied by Mr Apaloo, Mr Fenton, Miss Bennett, Mr Dugdale and Mr Eteson. We travelled to the stadium by tube from St. Pauls station – on the central line – to Holborn where we switched to the Piccadilly Line. Leaving at Holloway Road, it was a short and brisk walk to the Emirates, where we found our first guide Samir waiting outside. He gave us a tour around the stadium, showing us rooms Fishing trip yields one perch By JOSEPH ROSENFELD OGS It was Sunday the 11th of March 2012 and the angling society was going to the Dell in Woolwich for the first time this year to see what fish they could catch. The Dell is packed with coarse fish of all different types and sizes and is a great place to go fishing. There are usually loads of other fishermen there to give you advice and help you and today was no exception. Although it wasn’t the best day for fishing, as soon as we arrived at the Dell we immediately set up our rigs and started fishing. The first half an hour went without any fish for any of us, but as we watched on to see all different fish being landed around us by the other fisherman we were still extremely confident that soon citizenschool 3 of employment for the local residents. Today the area is rather scenic, though sadly quite empty, with businesses having closed down. The area has been regenerated along with the coming of the Olympics, though not with much employment in the area for local residents. However, the setting up of the new DLR and Jubilee line extensions have helped people to commute across London and other areas for employment, also helping us to reach the London Victoria Docks. Here one highlight of the day was visiting the Excel Centre, first observing it from the Connaught Bridge. This area contained one of the other key schemes in the regeneration of Docklands, privatised housing, which was located right on the waterfront. The Excel Centre itself was not at its best of days when we visited. A few janitors, security guards and coffee shop attendants could be seen working, with almost no visitors in the place. After this we proceeded to our last and greatest site of the day, the Olympic Park. The view from a hill over the Olympic Park, despite the overcast conditions, was spectacular. This proved to be the highlight of the day, with the regeneration of the area potentially being extremely successful, particularly in Stratford. The area was given a huge makeover; from the local car park we observed the £1.4 billion multi-domed Westfield complex at the height of its sales hours. like the media room (where journalists wrote stories) and interview rooms for TV companies such as Sky and the BBC. After a visit to the stadium museum, we had a quick lunch and headed off to see the surrounding area and the old Highbury stadium (the old home of Arsenal), where we first went, which was turned into a block of apartments. You could see from the size and quantity of apartments that the stadium used to be quite small compared to most. The surrounding area was spotless. Not even a cigarette to be seen! We walked around for a bit, jotting down notes on the cleanliness of the areas, explaining why the stadium helps the local businesses and shops. Finally, we returned to the tube stop, returned to St. Pauls and were dismissed at the station. some fish would bite our wriggling maggots! We were right! A few minutes later Tomos Bliss from 1P managed to land a decent sized perch (about a quarter of a pound). After another half an hour with no more fish caught and the weather getting colder, we decided that it was time to move spots to what looked like a more promising spot nearby on the lake. We fished there for the rest of the morning but, with two fish dropping off the hook before we managed to bring them in and many nibbles, we failed to catch any more fish in spite of our very best efforts! However, at the end of the day, even though we had only managed to catch the one fish between us, it had still been a fun session of fishing and I am really looking forward to our next trip when we will hopefully have more success! thecitizen 16 March 2012
