As I write this column, we are almosthalf way through January. There are so many great things happeningin our club and I see the momentum building! As I always do at thistime of the year, let me take a moment to congratulate my runninghero Erika Abraham. At 70 years of age, Erika was once again seenrunning at the Annual Recover from the Holidays 50k. Even thoughshe did not complete the entire race this year (I believe she ran 5 lapsof 3.1 miles), she is still my running hero. How many 70 year oldwomen do you know can run over 15 miles in the middle of the winter?I showed up at the race this year and actually ran a few laps myself. She apologized for not feeling up to completing the entire 10 lapsthis year. I told her ―PLEASE don‘t feel bad.‖ I said, ―You are thebest!!!.‖ Erika has inspired me more than any other runner. When Ithink I can‘t go on or I think I can‘t complete a certain distance, I thinkof Erika‘s tenacity and it helps motivate me to do more! CongratulationsErika once again this year! Job well done! And, of course, I congratulateall the runners who completed the race. It is something to beproud of! Thanks also to Pete Colaizzo and Charlie Sprauer for anotherjob well done on putting on this race every year!As of the writing of this column, my wife Colleen and I are almostready to leave for Phoenix Arizona. We are running the Phoenix Rock‗n Roll marathon! This will be Colleen‘s first full marathon and my 7th.It has been tough training over the last few weeks with the snow andice, but we are excited about going and completing the race! Wish uswell and I will report back to let you know how we made out! It is alsothe week of our anniversary, so we will also be heading to Vegas for 4days after the race. Viva Las Vegas Baby! LOL. We got a great deal atthe MGM Grand – so hopefully our legs won‘t be too sore and we canwalk the strip in Vegas! Our next race coming up is the Winter Run in Lagrangeville on Sunday,February 1st. It starts at Town Hall. Conni Grace has taken over as racedirector this year. Make sure you all thank Pat DeHaven for the yearshe has devoted as race director. He has agreed to take over the SummerTrack Series this year, so Conni agreed to take over this race forPat. Volunteers are still needed – so if you can help out – please con-(Continued on page 2)Official Newsletter of MidHudsonRoadRunnersClub 1

MHRRC NewsSymmetry: The Training Group Lives OnBy Steve PerksIt may be the math teacher in me. On the other hand it might just bethe will of the running gods. Either way it looks like my tenure as coachof the MHRRC training group will have symmetry to it. It will live on forone more year. The group started five years ago when the Empire StateGames came to the Mid-Hudson valley for the first time. It was my wayof trying to get members to head to the track and try something otherthan the same old road race routine. For a while it looked like last season would be my last as coach. Theway things have turned out, Marlene and I will be around for one morespring and summer (with lots of traveling to NC while the house is beingbuilt). Coincidentally, the Empire State Games will be returning tothe area again this year. Thus, my last year will be very much like thefirst, with a focus on the ESGs. Symmetry.Just because we will focus on the ESGs doesn‘t mean we will neglect theroad racers, half-marathon and marathon folks. It certainly will meanwe will have a larger variety of workouts and workout groups, especiallyas we get near races that people are peaking for.Check the MHRRC web site for updates on when and where practiceswill begin. MHRRC NewsA Reciprocal AgreementBy Steve PerksNot long ago I received an e-mail with an interesting proposal from a long time friend and even longer timesupporter of running in the mid-Hudson valley. I started road racing back in1979 and Steve Schallenkampwas already a fixture on the local running scene. Thirty years later that has not changed in the slightest.Steve is one of the early directors or our own Schlathaus Park races and is currently one of the most activerace directors in Ulster County. As director of Ray‘s Run, a four mile race that is run in Kingston on April 19 and like the Kingston Classic, finishes on the Dietz Stadium track, Steve was looking for a way to boost attendance at the race and came upwith what I think is a great idea. Like our MHRRC Ed Erichson Memorial Run, Ray‘s Run is a memorial racefrom which the proceeds are used to fund an award for high school runners. Since many local runners don‘ttravel far to race unless it‘s a marathon and the Hudson River often seems to be a major barrier, Steve‘s ideais to try to get a large contingent of runners from the west side of the river to come run the MHRRC Ed ErichsonMemorial Races, while we reciprocate by having a large contingent of ―eastsiders‖ cross over the river andrun Ray‘s Run.So, as you‘re getting your race calendar set for 2009, make sure it‘s got March 8th (Ed Erichson MemorialRaces) and April 19th (Ray‘s Run) for some early Spring running and support of great causes.Volunteers Needed for Winter Run - 10:00 AM on February 1Remember there is a new start time for the Winter Run this year: 10:00 AMThis race will be chip-scored. Please pre-register to prevent race day delays. Even if you are a club memberplanning on running this free race, Race Director Conni Grace asks you to pre-register to reduce delays. If you are not running this race, please consider volunteering. Members’ MusingsGetting Older in AmericaBy Connie SeighIf anyone remembers my ―Not Getting Any Younger‖article from earlier in 2008, you might recall that Iwas ambushed by a crazed sales person with handcream at the Galleria. Well, you would have thought Ihad learned my lesson and planned detours aroundthis middle of the mall booth, but no, they got meagain. On a drizzly cold Sunday, I decided to skip my runand head to the mall with Katrina. I had promisedher a trip to her most favorite store in the world,―Build-A-Bear.‖ On our ride over, I counted severalpeople out running and felt a twinge of yearning, butI had just ran the 25K at the Turkey Trot on theThursday before and had gone out for a 30 minuteslow-but-steady run on Saturday, so I didn‘t feel tooguilty. We ventured our way into the mall and took our timetaking in all of the sights. I was in a happy, not in ahurry mood. All of a sudden, this smiling youngwoman grabs my hand and lathers moisturizer on it.My heart dropped into my stomach and I thought,―Oh no, not again!‖ I quickly told her I had bought aset last year, hoping to get away, but she had otherproducts to show me. I was raised to be polite, so Ipatiently listened to her sales pitch, thinking, ―I‘m astrong, confident woman. I‘ll just decline any purchasesshe offers.‖The real highlight of the adventure was when sheasked me to sit on a chair and take off my glasses. Myheart sank again. I knew what she was going for. Thisgirl, barely out of her teens, whipped out a magic serumand started applying it to my crow‘s feet. Shewas trying to erase my years and cheerfully told meI‘d look fabulous in about a month‘s time, if I usedthis.I earned all of these creases from being a happy person.I really don‘t need to look twenty again. I feelfabulous and the only things I can give credit for thatare an active lifestyle, a loving family, a great runningcommunity, and, of course, diet coke and chocolate.Well, those last two aren‘t so good for you, but theydo make me feel happy. I managed to get away withonly purchasing a three course facial treatment for amere $113.00, which normally went for $240.00. Shesold me on that one when she said it works wonderson acne. Boy, there‘s nothing better than going to themall and having your pimples and creases pointed outfor you by a total stranger. I should‘ve gone for a runinstead!I can‘t believe I go out in public looking the way I do.Maybe I should just put a bag over my head and thenno one has to suffer by looking at my imperfections.Maybe I should just avoid the mall and spend moretime running with people who appreciate me for myinner beauty. But, hey, if my skin starts to look radiant, please don‘t hesitate to tell me. I won‘t complain.10 Reasons to Love Winter RunningBy Polly SparlingA few years ago, while taking part in the DecemberHoliday Run, I overheard the following exchange betweena fellow competitor and a traffic control volunteer:Runner: Hey Joe, why aren‘t you in the race?Volunteer: Oh no, not me! I hate the cold. Once theleaves are off the trees, I‘m done running until thespring.Oh, that poor deluded soul, I thought to myself. Hehas yet to discover the joys of winter running! Whocares if it‘s 10 below and the road looks like a skatingrink? Hitting the streets in January is such an adventure! It‘s one of those things — like a cheap-winehangover or having a root canal — that you just haveto experience to truly appreciate. Call me crazy, but Ifeel duty-bound to convince all you winter treadmilljunkies to lace up, open the door, and embrace allthat Mother Nature has to throw at you.And so, in that spirit (and with apologies to DavidLetterman), here are the top 10 reasons why I lovewinter running:10: Dark side of the moon — It‘s so invigorating tostart a morning workout under a sky that‘s as pitchblack as when you went to bed nine hours earlier.9: On the road again -- With most of my favorite off-(Continued on page 6)Official Newsletter of MidHudsonRoadRunnersClub 5

(Continued from page 5)road routes covered in snow, I really get to knowevery tree, driveway, and lawn jockey in my neighborhoodwhile traversing the same three streets over, and over, and over again.8: Slip-sliding away — The miles just seem to fly bywhen you‘re focused on avoiding those pesky patchesof black ice. Afraid of slipping? No worries – there areplenty of good orthopedists around.7: Unequal footing — ―Listening to your body‖ takeson a whole new meaning when your frost-bitten feetare crunching through snow and frozen slush.6: Moving target – I get such an adrenaline rush whendrivers (usually sipping coffee and dialing cellphones) need to wildly swerve to avoid propelling meinto the nearest snow bank.5: Blowin‘ in the wind — Battling a 20-mile-an-hourheadwind (and being pushed backward in the process)burns so many additional calories!4: Sweat & shiver -- How many other activities can youname that leave certain parts of your anatomy coveredin sweat, while others parts are frozen solid?3: Down the hatch — I enjoy the challenge of tryingto polish off the contents of my water bottle before itturns into a slushie.2: (Un)Comfortably numb — Feeling so excruciatinglycold brings to mind all those fond memories ofthe sweaty, humid, and excruciatingly hot days ofsummer. And, the number one reason why I love winter running…1: The long, hot shower that comes when it‘s over!If winter running sounds like something that you, too, think you could grow to love, consider joiningour weekly training runs (usually held on Sundaymornings at various Dutchess County locations). Allability levels are welcome; see the Training Runspage for details.
