Dr.Veta Powell New retired from theRichmond County <strong>School</strong> System afternearly 32 years of dedicated service. Shehas accepted the Director of TeacherQuality position with the GeorgiaDepartment of Education.The <strong>Hephzibah</strong> family said its finalgoodbyes at a surprise assembly programand luncheon on Friday, September 26,2008. Each department presented Dr.New with a reminder of her years at<strong>Hephzibah</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>. The playis designed to show Julie’sdeteriorating mental state and herinability to deal with the emotions thatoverwhelm her and other’s lack ofunderstanding in dealing with hisproblems. The play brings attentionto the circumstances surroundingteenage suicide and will serve as thekick-off to HHS’s Red Ribbon Weekcelebration. Chris Norris will be theguest speaker.The play is today, October 23rd,and begins at 7:00 p.m. It will be heldThink Pink WeekThe Senior Counciland the class of 2009under the advisementof Ms. Robin Gibson isoff to a great start this 2009year. Mark yourcalendars now for the Class of 2009Christmas Breakfast. This year’sbreakfast will take place on Friday,December 5th. Students, be sure tocast your vote on the location, ourtraditional Cracker Barrel or the newInternational House of Pancakes(IHOP).at the <strong>Hephzibah</strong> Middle <strong>School</strong>theater. Donations will be accepted.As the nation celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness month, the<strong>Hephzibah</strong> family celebrates our annual Think Pink Week. Duringthis time the rebel red is a little faded and the campus is flooded inpink. To start off our activities the family participated in TheMiracle Mile Walk for Breast Cancer. The HHS team included Ms.Melinda Robinson, Ms. Karen Johnson, Ms. Queen Coleman,Cameron Freeman, Samantha Brown, and Lindsey Singletary.Official Think Pink Week activities will be take place October 27—31st. Manyactivities are planned that will bring awareness to cancer and salute oursurvivors. Some activities include, but are not limited to, door and halldecorations, visual arts contests, and fundraising. Think pink t-shirts arepresently for sale for $10.00 each.All funds raised will go to the Melinda Lewis Williams Scholarship Fund. Mrs.Melinda Lewis Williams taught at <strong>Hephzibah</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> for 27 years. Shegraced our halls with an attitude of perseverance and excellence. Thescholarship which is dedicated to her memory is awarded annually to adeserving graduating senior.Future Business Leaders of AmericaHHS FFA is off to a great start withover 160 members and many cocurricularactivities planned. Thisyear the HHS FFA chapter has donevery well in regional and statecompetitions. The chapter washighlighted and pictured in theOctober issue of the national FFAmagazine, New Horizons. At theGeorgia Chapter Officers LeadershipTraining Conference <strong>Hephzibah</strong>(Dusty Williams, Kasey Boutwell,Andy Whisnant, Coty Bailey, JeffMalcom, Heather Daniels, LindseyHart, Chris Crosby, M.J. Dixon, NickSmith and Zach Mason) received theaward for the Most Spirited Chapter.Congratulations to Chris Crosby forhis first place in the central regionlawnmower maintenance andoperation competition. Chrisadvances to the state level in thespring. Congratulations to JeffMalcom, Kasey Boutwell, Zach Masonand John Creech for their 2 nd place inthe regional archery competition.Congratulations to Chris Crosby,Thomas Harmon, Nick Smith, JeffMalcom, and M.J. Dixonon their three 1 st placefinishes in the 1 st annualBBQ cook-off. Studentsmay also purchase an FBLA shirt for an additional cost of$10. Shirts have already been ordered, but we will haveextras. They are exceptionally good-looking, collared,polo shirts with the official HHS, as well as, the officialFBLA logos on them.FBLA will begin working on preparations for RegionCompetition at our October meeting which will be October28 th . All members interested in placing at RegionCompetition so that they have a shot at State Competition,and then National Competition, are encouraged to attendthis very important meeting.Our FBLA club had a beautiful float in the HomecomingParade on Oct. 10 th . The float had a patriotic themefeaturing our presidential candidates with an emphasis onvoting. Many thanks to Mrs. Murray who helped put ittogether! All who participated had a great time at theparade!
