Additionally, according to the new dress code, properly fittingshirts (not longer than to the fingertips) do not have to be tucked in.The relaxed dress code goes into effect for the 2012-2013 school year. The Board's decision follows arecommendation by the District Advisory Committee (DAC) which reviewed the dress code issueduring the past school year. The DAC is made up of principals, administrators, parents and Cedar Hillcommunity members. The 2010 strategic plan called for a review of the standardized dress code andthe committee completed that review this spring. The DAC conducted a survey of district parents, teachers and students to get their input. "Of the 3,000surveysthat were returned, more than half of the respondents wanted to allow students to wear jeans inaddition to black and khaki pants," said Director of Student Assessment Ronnie Moss. "Therespondents also wanted to expand the choice of shirts, which is why the committee decided to addspirit shirts.“The new dress code statesthat students in grades 5-12must wear a belt throughthe belt loops on their slacksor jeans. The code adds thatjeans must fit at the waistand inseam and have finishedhems. No saggy or baggypants are allowed.Writing and advertisement(other than a product logo)are not allowed.11th and 12th grade Collegiatestudents at CVC will be able tofollow the CHISD new dress codeas is. Message From The Editor…Hello! Hello! Hello! To all of the students, parents and staff of Cedar Hill Collegiate High School! I am Maria Burke, editor ofthe CHCHS Newsletter and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back all returning students and extend a heartyCollegiate “Welcome” to all new students, parents and staff. I look forward to meeting and working with as many of you aspossible during this upcoming school year.As we embark on a new school year, I would like to take a moment to encourage ALL parents to GET INVOLVED!!! Beinga part of the Collegiate family requires a lot of work and it calls for dedication and commitment from everyone. Your childrenneed you! We need you! And believe me , there is more than enough work to go around. PTSA, Booster Club, HospitalityCommittee, Communications Committee, Newsletter Committee , Volunteer Coordinators, Administrative Assistance –the list goes on and on!According to numerous researchers, not only is parental involvement encouraged – it is essential to the success and well-beingof our students. A research study conducted by the Michigan Department of Education shares the following:‣86% of the general public believes that support from parents is the most important way to improve the schools. 4‣Lack of parental involvement is the biggest problem facing public schools. 5‣ Decades of research show that when parents are involved students have 6 :•Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates•Better school attendance•Increased motivation, better self-esteem•Lower rates of suspension•Decreased use of drugs and alcohol•Fewer instances of violent behavior‣Family participation in education was twice as predictive of students’ academic success as family socioeconomic status. Some of the more intensive programs had effects that were 10 times greater than other factors. 7‣The more intensely parents are involved, the more beneficial the achievement effects. 8‣The more parents participate in schooling, in a sustained way, at every level -- in advocacy, decision-making and oversightroles, as fund-raisers and boosters, as volunteers and para-professionals, and as home teachers -- the better for studentachievement. 9So come on parents! Aren’t your children worth the extra time and effort? YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE. As a matterof fact – you make all of the difference in the world! Let’s have an awesome year together! Hope to see ya soon!Sources: 4 Rose, Gallup, & Elam, 1997 ; 5 Rose, Gallup, & Elam, 1997 ; 6 Parent Teacher Association7 Walberg (1984) in his review of 29 studies of school–parent programs. ; 8 Cotton, K., Wikelund, K., Northwest RegionalEducational Laboratory, School Improvement Research Series.
