Men’s Cross Country #2The men’s cross country team achieved a #2national ranking in the U.S. Track & Field andCross Country Coaches Association Top-25 poll inearly October. The Orediggers were ranked thirdin the pre-season poll.The Mines men placed third in the nation in2009, marking the highest-ever finish for a Minescross country team (men or women) at the NCAAchampionships.In other cross country news, Ben Zywicki andMarie Patton earned RMAC Runner of the Weekrecognition during the 2010 season. Zywicki isa six-time All-Americanfor the cross country andtrack & field programs,while Patton is a threetimeAll-American. Davey-Briggs was the 2004national champion in the 3,000-metersteeplechase andFriehauf wonthe Harlon HillTrophy in 2004,which goes tothe best player inNCAA Division IIfootball. The 2004football team achieved a 12-1 record,winning the RMAC Championship andbecoming the first-ever Mines footballteam to qualify for NCAA playoffs.• Mines quarterback Clay Garcia wasnamed RMAC Offensive Player of theWeek on two occasions in September.Garcia, who has qualified for thedean’s list during every semester ofhis collegiate career, is a BoettcherScholar.• Kevin Fickes washired as the newwomen’s soccercoach in July.Fickes served asan assistant tomen’s soccer coach Frank Kohlensteinfrom 1998-2006.
