president’smessagephysicaltherapyMinimize ThoseAches and PainsBy Allison Craven, SPT and Austin Woods, PT, DPTHave you ever injured your back during an intense weekend of yard work, awakenedwith a kink in your neck, or twisted your ankle while dashing across the street? Notsure where to go, who to see, or what to do if you’re still in pain a few days later?Try physical therapy.Three of the most common injuries that can be effectively treated withphysical therapy are low back pain, neck pain, and ankle injuries. Earlyaccess to physical therapy has been shown to shorten the course ofpain and to minimize the amount of medications needed. Starting acourse of physical therapy soon after the onset of injury or pain is alsoless costly because patients need less follow-up care and miss fewerworkdays.Neck painTherapist-directed exercise protocols, in addition to manual physical therapy, havebeen shown to be more favorable courses of treatment when compared to generalpractitioner only care that included advice and continued oral medication usage.People experiencing neck pain who were treated with physical therapy demonstratedgreater improvements in pain and disability, and utilized fewer healthcare dollarswhen compared to those who did not receive physical therapy.Low back pain (LBP)Approximately 80 percent of the workforce will experience LBP at some point.Physical therapy consisting of manual treatment and patient-specific exerciseinstruction has been shown to decrease pain and improve quality of life. The timingof physical therapy after injury can have a huge impact on recovery. Overall, physicaltherapy in the form of manual treatment and exercise provided early after an episode ofLBP proves to be the most time and cost efficient course of treatment.Ankle sprainPhysical therapy can be extremely effective in improving range of motion, decreasingpain, and improving function following an ankle sprain. Ongoing ankle instabilitycan occur in up to 60 percent of people who experience an ankle sprain if propertreatment is not sought. There is strong evidence which suggests that improving balanceand coordination through an individualized physical therapy program is effective inreducing the risk of future ankle sprains. Additional evidence suggests that ongoing ankleinstability may increase the risk of future knee injuries, so proper rehabilitation of aninitial ankle sprain is very important in injury prevention even many years later. If you think you may have an ache or pain that can be addressed with physical therapytreatment, don’t wait. 20/20lifestylesbeforeI thought I had all the answers about diet and exercise. I’d beenthrough every diet plan including Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig,Nutrisystem, and Atkins, always looking for the “magic bullet”that would fix my problem and allow me to go back to the lifestyleI wanted. I’d go on a diet or exercise program for 3-6 months, losethe weight, hit the goal, and then spend the next 12-18 monthsgaining it all back plus a good amount more. Each time, I’d gothrough this cycle, I’d get more discouraged. I did this about six orseven times over a 20-year period. The reason I’ve had success with 20/20 LifeStyles is that I reallydon’t view it as a program. With every other weight loss plan, I wasalways done when I’d hit my goal (which meant “it’s time to putthe weight back on again”). For the first time in my life, I reallybelieve that I’m making a permanent change. I’m not going to be“done” this time. It’s empowering to admit that I’m not going tobe perfect and that it doesn’t matter. After all, if this is going to bea lifestyle change that lasts, it has to be realistic, manageable, andinclude bumps along the way.The support that I received from the entire 20/20 LifeStylesstaff was the key. I can’t narrow it down to anything in particularbecause all aspects of the program work together.Having been an athlete throughout high school and college, Ithought, “I know how to lift and run. Why do I need a trainer?”Seeing better results from my trainer (Kate Loos) turned out tobe enlightening and freeing. I could just show up to the workoutsknowing that she was clearly better at this than I’d been and turnit over to her. Soon my strength and energy level were through theroof! The dietitian and counseling sessions were also invaluable. That’s one of the aspects that had been missing from my previousattempts to get healthy. I could lose the weight, but couldn’tmaintain it or sustain the better physical and mental condition. This program has allowed me to be honest about the process forthe first time.Prior to starting the program I was on cholesterol and high bloodpressure medication for many years. I don’t take medicationsany more. My blood pressure came down nearly 40 points andmy cholesterol levels are well below normal. I could have neverimagined this happening without medication.Previously, a setback would have driven me into weight gain. Now,I immediately e-mail my “board of directors” (my dietitian, trainer, doctor, and 20/20 counselor). I simply tell them what’s going onand how I’m feeling about it. They provide objective feedbackabout the progress I’ve made, where I’m going, and why gettingcaught up in the setback doesn’t serve the changes that I’m makingin my life. As long as I can be honest with my team, I know they’llgive me the support I need to put things into perspective. When I started the program, I was using clichés like, “I’m doingthis for my kids and my wife,” and “I’m getting too old not to getin shape.” I’m starting to figure out that this program can actuallybe for ME. and mentally is the true gift I can give to my family. I don’t have to do this for anyoneelse but me. My family and friends get the benefit of being around a happier, healthierhusband, father, and friend. The 20/20 LifeStyles program and the people that run it have literally changed mylife. This is no cliché. To date, I’ve lost 116 pounds of weight and shame, and gainedconfidence, strength, and health that I never thought were possible. Believe it or not, Ithink this has been the easy part. The coming year is when I get to explore what it’s liketo actually maintain my relationships with my “20/20 board members” and experiencewhat it means to really make a permanent change for the first time in my life. podiatryDo You Need Orthotics?By J. Mari Adad, DPMTake the following quiz to testyour knowledge about orthotics.(1)Orthotics can be created to fita variety of different footwearincluding high heels.True False(2)Every step you take places1.5 times your body weight ofpressure on each foot.True False(3)Plantar fasciitis is the mostcommon type of heel pain thatpodiatrists treat.True False(4)Fifty-eight percent of Americanssay they’ve experienced heelpain due to ill-fitting shoes.True FalseAnswersAll four statements are true.If you suffer from heel pain, knee pain,or lower back pain, it could be caused bypoor foot function. Many times this paincan be resolved by orthotics (foot supportsworn inside shoes), which re-align the footand ankle bones to their neutral position, thereby restoring natural foot function.Only prescription orthotics canaccommodate your unique foot structureand are designed to match the contour ofyour feet precisely for the way you move.Podiatrists use orthotics to treat footproblems such as plantar fasciitis, bursitis, tendinitis, diabetic foot ulcers, and foot, ankle, and knee pain.If orthotics are needed, your podiatricphysician will capture a three-dimensionalimage of each foot. That image, as wellas any measurements obtained, is used tocreate a set of unique foot supports thatwill improve your foot movement and leadto more comfort and mobility. There are two categories of prescriptionorthotics. Functional orthotics are designedto control abnormal motion and may beused to treat foot pain caused by abnormalmotion. Take the Age out of Aging6 Reasons to Get Serious About Strength TrainingBy Lindsay Exley, Personal TrainerPhysical activity shares many similarities to pharmacologicaltreatments. It has been proven to elicit many powerfulphysiological changes in the body that are beneficial to yourhealth. In fact, you can think of physical activity, especiallystrength training, as a medical prescription to your overall healthand fitness. Consider the following benefits of strength training asyou age.Strength training combined with aerobic training is aneffective means of reducing resting blood pressure.Although aerobic training improves our cardiovascularfitness, it doesn’t prevent the loss of muscle tissue. Strengthtraining helps maintain muscle mass. Not engaging in strengthtraining on a regular basis can attribute to 5-7 pounds of muscleloss every decade. The average adult experiences a 2-5 percent reduction inmetabolic rate every decade of life. Because regular strengthtraining prevents muscle loss, it also prevents the accompanyingdecrease in resting metabolic rate.Regular strength training helps minimize the declinein muscle mass that occurs during weight loss. Also, increased muscle mass as a result of strength training allows youto burn more calories all day long, reducing the likelihood of fataccumulation. An increase in lean muscle mass also leads to adecrease in body fat.The same training stimulus that increases muscle alsoincreases bone collagen proteins and mineral content. Forwomen, this is especially important as bone mineral density can beincreased, combating the bone loss that occurs post-menopause.Sensible strength training develops stronger muscles, bones, and connective tissue, helping to ease the pain ofosteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. If you don’t currently follow a strength training routine, contact apersonal trainer to help you get started.proclub.com 29

AQUATICSConquer Your FearsBy Kristi Gohl-Krumperman, Swim InstructorPhotos: Gerald Pope PhotographyWater can be the source of fun for everyone but when theinevitable dangers of water become a reality, it can be incrediblydifficult to rediscover that fun again.Having grown up in and around the water, the dangers of waterseemed distant and improbable. For me and my family, thevacations at the lake, swim meets, and pool parties providedmany amazing and unforgettable experiences. Then reality hitas my family experienced a water-related tragedy three summersago when my youngnephew drowned. Givingup swimming, boating, kayaking, and canoeingwould have been so easyto do. Turning our backson the tragic experience would have been the least painful wayto move on. However, we all faced our fears and got back in thewater. I became more passionate about teaching swim lessons thanever before and, as a result, I’ve learned that when a water-relatedaccident occurs, the best way to overcome any newly-developedfear is to get right back in the water. The longer an individual staysaway from what scares him/her, the more difficult it becomes toovercome that fear.Group and private swimlessons are available forall ages. Please contactAquatics for more details.Being safe in the water is an important life skill. Getting back intothe water could prevent an accident later on. It’s important torealize that if you or your child has developed a fear of the water, the only way to overcome it is to get back in the water. You cando this comfortably through swim lessons at PRO Sports Club orby simply getting back in the water and having fun as a family. Byfacing your fears head on, you’ll be able to rediscover and renewyour love for the water.proclub.com 31

Having a demanding job that was sedentary, it was easy for Sueto steadily gain weight over 10 years. However, after finding itdifficult to keep up with colleagues on a hike up Tiger Mountain, she decided to return to a healthier lifestyle. What prompted you to invest in your well-being?I experienced the unpleasant phenomenon of realizing that I didn’treally look like the image I imagined when I looked in the mirror.I wanted to reclaim the fitness level I had 10 years ago. What discoveries did you make along the way?I had to learn to swim for a sprint triathlon. When the triathlonwebsite said, “Only athletes are allowed in the transition area,” Ithought, “Then where do I go?” It was a big awakening for me torealize that they were talking about me. I was the athlete! Sincethen, I’ve run a half marathon, learned to play squash, becamea zealous yoga enthusiast, sampled Zumba, and recently addedPilates to my fitness routine.Barbara ParkOn her birthday, Barbara realized that she had a choice abouthow she aged from then on. She could choose to remain obese, sedentary, and unable to comfortably participate in many activitiesor she could choose to become active, healthy, and fit. What motivated you to invest in your health?I’d seen people who joined the 20/20 LifeStyles program changedramatically from having trouble getting around to running milesevery day. I wanted that too, maybe not running miles every day,but the ability and fitness to do so.What adjustments have you had to make as you age? From yoga I learned an important principle: don’t compareyourself to others. Rather, seek to improve from your own personalbaseline. Another adjustment has been acceptance (like agreeing tobe part of this article about aging!)Any advice you’d like to share?Set goals and don’t be afraid to try something new. Make yourhealth a priority since that will positively impact all facets of yourlife.Sue BohnHow did you change?I’d never worked out in a gym before, so I hired a trainer. Shewas great at shaping the program to meet my preferences, myfitness level, and any physical limitations. Plus, it was fun to havesomeone to talk with while working out.Greatest challenges you’ve had to face?Staying motivated in spite of slow weight loss. However, I stuckwith it and have lost 35 pounds. I thought that having to walk somuch would be a challenge but I found a coworker who’s delightedto have a walking partner and neighbors who like to walk afterwork. Also, all I have to say is, “Walk?” to my dog and any furtherchoice is out of my hands. What helps you to stay motivated?I want to keep what I’ve achieved. I’m wearing size 6 now, feel 10-15 years younger, have more energy, and have made new friends. What adjustments have you had to make as you age?I stopped thinking about the shortest route and started thinkingabout adding steps instead. PhilGoatleyI knew that Pilates focusedon core strength and thoughtthat it would be good for me. Iused to suffer from lower backpain due to a combination ofpoor posture and sitting forlong periods of time. As I’veimproved at Pilates, I’ve noticedthat my better posture andincreased muscle tone helpsalleviate my lower back pain. The Pilates Studio is reallywell laid out and there isalways enough equipment foreveryone taking class. It’s a funenvironment. My instructor isfantastic. She obviously loveswhat she does and constantlychallenges me to get better bychanging up the exercises andvarying the routine. She alsohas a great sense of humor, even when some of it is at myexpense like when I have the“shakes” with a particularlychallenging exercise. However,I believe I manage to hold myown and get even with thehumor. That kind of interactionhas helped keep me consistentat Pilates. It’s something I lookforward to every week.Pilates has been great forhelping me with my posture.Being tall, I’ve had a tendencyto slouch or carry weight moreon one side. As I worked on thePilates exercises that involvedbalancing, I discovered that Iwas carrying weight differently. We’ve adjusted that over time. Ialso love to play volleyball andwater ski, both of which requirecore strength. Pilates has been agreat way to build core strengthand I now enjoy those activitieseven more.proclub.com 35

Exercise:The Secret to Anti-AgingBy Jo Lonseth, Personal TrainerFINISHLINEMany of us exercise out of a desire to look good or achieve somehigher performance level in an activity or sport. The thought ofexercising out of necessity to simply be able to function on a dailylevel is far from most minds. However, these thoughts seem tosurface as life takes its toll and the body ages. The main reasons forstaying active and healthy as one ages include being able to get outof bed without difficulty, putting on a coat effortlessly, or beingable to catch a fall without injury – simple but very importantdaily requirements.“Since I’vestartedexercising everyday, I can’timagine livingwithout it”Many view retirement asan opportunity to kick uptheir feet and relax. Whilethat may be an optionfor some people, thereare a few who choose thisas an opportunity to getmore exercise and start (orcontinue) looking after theirbody and health. At age 79,Gloria Setnik is one of thoseambitious retirees. She staysbusy and active by personal training twice a week, attends wateraerobics two or three times a week, and fits in walking dates withher friends throughout the rest of the week. As a result, she hasmade substantial improvements in her health and well-being.Balance and coordination are very important throughout life, butso much more when the bones are more fragile and the musclesnot as strong. This past year when Gloria was playing basketballwith her grandkids, she tripped over the curb and almost fell. However, due to the coordination and agility she gained fromstaying active, she was able to catch herself and prevent what couldhave been a broken bone or a bruised body.As Gloria knows, exercise doesn’t need to be repetitive or boring. You can mix it up by joining a class, working with a personaltrainer, meeting up with friends at the park, or just going for astroll around the block. “My biggest achievement was hauling thatbig old rope all the way around the gym,” says Gloria. “Exercise isalways so fun and interesting.”“Since I’ve started exercising every day, I can’t imagine livingwithout it,” says Gloria. “I feel like something is missing out of myday if I don’t get some sort of exercise or activity in.”Photos: Gerald Pope PhotographyTwo years ago, Gloria weighed 35 pounds more and routinely atea Danish pastry for breakfast. That habit changed last fall. Eggwhites and protein shakes have taken the place of pastries. Gloriastruggled with many health issues as the result of her former yearsof unhealthy choices. One of her regrets is that she didn’t start thiskind of lifestyle years ago. “However, it’s never too late to startbecause I’ve already seen so many benefits from the changes I’vemade in the last year,” she says. “It has been worth every sacrificeand drop of sweat.”proclub.com 47

In their first year, the 4.0 teamwas ranked fourth in the Pacific Northwest region. The followingyear, they improved and came close to being qualified in thesectional playoffs. Then this past year, they did it! They finishedthe season undefeated and qualified as the number one team goinginto the sectional playoffs, making it all the way to the finals.Their first loss of the season was in the sectional championshipmatch, after beating the Edgebrook and Seattle Tennis Clubteams in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches. That’s quite anaccomplishment for a team that began just three years ago.“We have strong players on our team and we’ve improved year afteryear,” says Captain Juan. “I’d like to thank all 14 team membersfor their commitment. It takes a lot of dedication, and sometimespersonal sacrifice, to meet on a regular basis and practice together.Over the past three years, we’ve gotten to know each other better, welcomed a few new players, and had a lot of fun. Many goodfriendships have formed.”Co-Captain Nick Tsilas adds, “We developed a strong sense ofcamaraderie over the years and meaningful new friendships, somewhich even enabled business opportunities between us. We alsoexperienced the health benefits of playing on the team and beingcompetitive. The goal that we’d set for ourselves in our third yearwas to reach the playoffs. As a result, we became more focusedin our practices, which included several days on court as wellas individual training off court. We’re thrilled that we not onlyaccomplished our objective of reaching the play-offs, but alsoexceeded it by making the finals! And as a bonus, we had lots offun, stayed in shape, and made super friendships. Having playedother teams over the past several years gave us the opportunity tovisit many area clubs. The one thing that became clear over timewas how much better PRO Sports Club is. We have more courts, incredible facilities, more supportive and knowledgeable staff, andyou can play all year round. We appreciate all the club hasto offer.”proclub.com 59
