Childrenface many challenges including poverty, lowself esteem and lack of opportunity.Bootle as a town has no bookshop. It has3 small libraries, hubs of the community withessential access to the internet for the manywithout a computer at home. Due to councilcuts these are under threat of closure. There are 21 primary schools in Bootle. Some of them rank in the bottom 4% forliteracy but the top 4% for Maths. In oneinstance, Year 1 phonics tests showedthat children were 10% better at readingnonsense words than real words – notbecause they could not read the word butbecause they have not recognised it.Words such as ‘Jazz’ and ‘Turnip’ arenot in their vocabulary as these words arenot within the experience of a largely nonbook culture. Our children have as much potentialas others and our schools have wonderfulstandards of teaching, but children do havea distinct lack of opportunity in comparisonwith their more affluent counterparts, andthis is evidenced in their levels of literacy.Ykids believes that all children shouldhave as many opportunities as possible toreach their full potential. We are committedto enhancing the lives and opportunities forBootle children. We are staging this event tooffer to schools as an additional resource tosupport literacy in your school and help toinspire children to read, write, and imagine. This feature has been kindly

Some kids may be motivatedby a sticker on the chart, while others mayneed the promise of a more tangible prize, like a trip to the community pool or zoo,

50Check-up on school time works forparents, survey revealsIt may prove to beunpopular with teachers, buta recent survey has revealedparents are most likely totake their child to the dentistduring school hours.Conducted by the BritishDental Health Foundation, three in five people (60 percent) said they would mostlikely take their child to thedentist during school hours.Three in ten (31 per cent)would opt to go duringthe school holidays whileless than one in ten (9 percent) would do during theweekend.Although many local oralhealth promotion teams andlocal dental practices forgepartnerships with schools, there is no substitute forvisiting the dentist. The latestdental health statistics3 forchildren showed one in three(31 per cent) five-year-oldsin England suffered fromtooth decay.Chief Executive ofthe British Dental HealthFoundation, Dr Nigel CarterOBE, emphasises theimportance of regular checkups, particularly for children.Dr Carter says: “More andmore practices are taking theneeds of school children intoconsideration with how theyschedule their appointments.Later and weekend openinghours mean parents cantake their children to thedentist without the need forskipping school attendance. The school holidays are also agreat time to take your childfor a check-up.“Not only will regularvisits to the dentistacclimatise your child tothe surroundings, theywill give the dentistthe opportunity toidentify any oralhealth problemsthat may bedeveloping.“Early childhoodexperiences determine achild’s dental health needs forthe rest of their lives.
