Welcome to Liverpool . . .Welcome to Liverpool, European Capital of Culture, for the40th Annual Scientific Meeting of the British MedicalUltrasound Society.2008 is the 50th anniversary of the invention of diagnosticultrasound, and so it is particularly fitting that the Donald,MacVicar and Brown Lecture will be introduced byTom Brown and John MacVicar in person, giving us theopportunity to honour these pioneers of clinical ultrasound.ContentsWelcome to Liverpool 3programme timetables 4-6BMUS 2008 will retain a strong scientific programme, withguest lectures, seminars and proffered papers, butwill have more emphasis on hands-on workshops andintegrated training sessions, which will combine smallgroup seminars with practical training. This format isdesigned to meet the needs of the wider community ofultrasound practitioners, as well as our core membership, and to consolidate our renewed relationship with the majorultrasound manufacturers and suppliers, who will be here instrength.Integrated Training Sessions are a new concept designedto provide a whole day of intensive training and hands-onexperience in basic abdominal ultrasound, regionalanaesthesia techniques, and ultrasound in sports medicine. Both the integrated training sessions and the shorterworkshops will provide the opportunity to use the mostup-to-date scanners supplied by the AxREM group ofmanufacturers, replacing a conventional exhibition.Special thanks are due to the members of the ScientificOrganising Committee and BMUS Council for all of theirhard work, and especially to President-Elect Julie Walton. Thanks also to the BMUS office staff, Ann Tailor, RachelMeir, and Alice Hepworth, for their professionalism anddedication to BMUS and the success of this meeting.Without their support, none of this would be possible. We hope that BMUS 2008 will offer you an outstandingscientific and educational programme, and also theopportunity to enjoy some of the vibrant culture and nightlifeof Liverpool.programme – tuesday 7programme – wednesday 12programme – thursday 15poster exhibition 18list of exhibitors 22exhibition hall 3 23exhibitors 25conference floor plan 36Scientific CommitteeDr Laurence Abernethy (Chair)Dr Grant BaxterDr Neil CozensDr Colin DeaneMr Tony Doherty (AxREM Chair)Dr Carmel MoranDr. Laurence Abernethy,Chairman,Scientific Organising Committee,BMUS 2008Mrs Janette KeitMrs Jan OliverDr Devender RobertsMrs Julie Walton(President Elect)3
