Specialist areas in the multimedia sectors are growingrapidly in North America, Asia and Europe, resulting in anincreased demand for people with the expertise and skillsthat combine creativity, imagination, fun and technology.The Interactive Multimedia and Design (IMD) programprovides a multidisciplinary education in diverse, yetconnected, subject areas such as web design, 2D and 3Dcomputer animation, game design and development, visualeffects, graphic design, human-computer interaction (HCI)and project management. In addition, this program is one ofonly a few in Canada that combines both a bachelor’sdegree and an advanced applied arts diploma.PROGRAM OVERVIEWWith its unique mix of design, engineering, science,mathematics and social science courses, the IMD programfocuses on the entire design process—from initial conceptthrough to final realization. It is best suited to students withthe potential to be both artistically creative andtechnologically adept, and with a keen interest in designingthe next generation of multimedia applications, productsand media.ADVANTAGES OF THE PROGRAMThe world is changing at a fast pace. As a student of todayand a designer of tomorrow, you need well-roundedpractical experience as well as a strong theoreticaleducation upon which you can build a lifetime career inthis area.The IMD program provides the tools you need to start witha problem and move through the entire process—fromconcept, to pre-production, to production, through topost-production. Along the way, you will learn how to turnyour ideas into reality using a mixture of technical andartistic skills.Upon graduation you will be well equipped to work in andhelp shape the digital world of the 21st century.CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATIONThe program offers a flexible co-op option that allows youto gain at least 12 months of on-site practical experience insettings such as government agencies, technologycompanies, game development organizations, animationstudios and other private sector industries.FUTURE OPPORTUNITIESSuccessful completion of this four-year program gives youboth a university bachelor’s degree and an advanced collegediploma. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSTo be eligible for admission to the first year of the Bachelorof Information Technology in IMD, Ontario students musthave an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with aminimum of six 4U/M courses. Your six courses mustinclude:• One 4U Math creditThe application deadline is March 1.For all applicants outside of Ontario, please visitadmissions.carleton.ca/requirements.In addition, candidates for the BIT program in InteractiveMultimedia and Design must submit a portfolio of workthat demonstrates the applicant’s creativity and aptitude indesign work; examples include, but are not limited to,animation, 3D modeling, web design, game design,drawing, graphic design, photography, set design, collage,craft design, etc. It is recommended that you submit aportfolio that shows a broad range of artistic skills.Generally, your portfolio and academic records areconsidered equally for admission to the program.
