Upon successful completion,students can matriculateinto the graduate MS Accountingprogram. The induction ceremonytook place in Trenton on May 2.The NJCBAA annually invites the top1% of undergraduate students who arepursuing a degree in business.Three studentswhose specializationis Accountingwere eachawarded a$4,000scholarship by the<strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> Societyof CertifiedElaine Lopez, Rezarta Aliaj,and Dougles Mose in Trenton.Public Accountants(NJSCPA):Ms. Karen Foster, who works in the NJCUController’s office and has completed bothAccounting and Finance specializations; Ms.Aziza Kroun, a high school teacher in hernative Algeria currently working for the HudsonCounty Division of Welfare as a HumanServices Specialist; and Ms. Maria La-Freniere, a Presidential Scholar attendingthe Communiversity, and a staff accountantwith AIG.The Guarini Student Investor award waspresented to Mr. Jason Nadolny, presidentand chief investment officer of theStudent Investment Management Group,for his leadership role in the first twoyears of the group’s operations. Mr.Nadolny graduated in May with a Master’sof Science degree in Finance.For more information, contact BusinessAdministration Department chairpersonMarilyn Ettinger at mettinger@njcu.edu.Health Sciences Graduate Student Wins Grant for Medical CenterMs. Alda Nelson, a student in the MSin Health Sciences / Health Administrationprogram, recently scored a significantaccomplishment during her internshipat the <strong>Jersey</strong> <strong>City</strong> MedicalCenter (JCMC) Palliative Care Unit.Ms. Nelson was responsible for obtaininga $15,000 grant for the MedicalCenter.The funds will be used in the care of patientsin the unit to provide a range of services.Among other things, the grant will be used tohost ‘lunch and learn’ sessions for caregivers,purchase therapeutic videos for patients, andprovide community outreach programs. Thegrant will also support attendance at seminarsby JCMC employees, where they willbe able to learn and exchange informationwith other healthcare workers inthat field.For more information, contact Dr. GailGordon, chairperson, Health SciencesDepartment, at ggordon@njcu.edu.Successful Year for Student Investment GroupSIM Group members met with Jason Perez ofA.G. Edwards on April 28 to discuss investmentstrategies.The NJCU Student Investment ManagementGroup, also known as the SIMGroup, completed its second year of operation,once again outperforming the S&P500. The group now has a portfolio offourteen holdings of individual stocks andexchange-traded funds (ETFs).The group’s investments have consistentlyout-performed the S&P 500 index. The returnon the portfolio since its initial investments inApril 2007 through April 20<strong>08</strong> is 7.82%, comparedto a decline in the S&P index of –0.42%in a similar time period.Along with opportunities to analyze and selectinvestments, members also may be chosen tointern with A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. (nowWachovia Securities), the brokerage firmthrough which the groups funds are traded.The first student to participate was Financemajor Nazmi Tarhan. According to Mr.Jason Perez, A.G. Edwards account manager,Mr. Tarhan outperformed students fromother universities, demonstrating “a soundacademic background, strong investmentanalysis skills and high work ethics.” Thecompany looks forward to providing the internshipopportunity to more NJCU interns.The Student Investment Management Groupwas formed in AY 2006-2007 and offers studentsthe opportunity to invest funds for theNJCU Foundation.
