K C B l u e s N e w sA Word...From KCBS President Lil’ Joe SherrickThe month of May is behind us now, however it was a month that will not be forgotten for a long, long time. The BluesCommunity mourns the loss of our beloved Michael Burks. He never knew a stranger and took time to talk to everyone. Ialways looked forward to seeing him when he came to town or hooking up with him when we were out of town. It won’t bethe same without him and I know from talking with his band members that they are still reeling from the loss of a greatfriend and artist. Donald “Duck” Dunn, the legendary and historical bassist and one of my heroes, also left us last month. What incredible talent! He was the foundation of the Stax and Booker T sound. The one thing about music is that eventhough the artist is no longer with us, their music still lives on.On an up note, we had a great time in Memphis at the Blues Music Awards. It was so cool to be at a gathering of so manytalented people all at the same place and time. Congratulations to KC’s Samantha Fish for receiving the “Best NewArtist” Award. We were all shocked, including Samantha, because she was the first award recipient to be announced.Trampled Under Foot was nominated for three awards this year. Danielle was up for “Best Instrumentalist Bassist”, they were nominated forthe “Best Band” and “Best DVD”. I’m sure more nominations will follow in the coming years. I must report toyou that their performance at the awards brought the house down. Samantha got up and performed with themfirst, then TUF performed and brought on stage KC’s Shinetop on keys, and when Daniel performed the song shewrote, “Goodbye”, they received a standing ovation and long applause from everyone. There was no other actthat evening to receive the audience reaction that they did. I was sitting by Jay Sieleman, Executive Director ofThe Blues Foundation, (I couldn’t help myself) when I said to him “what do you think of Kansas City now?” KCBSis so grateful to these artists for representing Kansas City in such a positive light when they perform and duringtheir travels. We are blessed to have such talent in our City! The KCBS IBC Challenge will be underway soon and we are looking forward to sending two more acts to Memphisto represent Kansas City and wow the crowds there. There will be many festivals to attend this month: Gladstone Festival 06/08-09, Parkville Festival 06/15-16 andBearcreek Festival in Slater, Missouri 06/30. Also, I encourage you to please attend the KCBS Monthly Meetingand Jam Sessions. This is how you support live Blues Music in KC and stay abreast of the happenings. We want to hear from you on any suggestionsyou may have for improving the organization as we must continue to grow in many ways. Thank you for going to the clubs that continue toprovide live music as this is the only way it can survive! Michael Burks—July 30,1957—May 6, 2012K C B l u e s N e w sOurFriend,MichaelBurksBy Frank HicksI remember the firsttime we had Michael at Knuckleheads, we all fell inlove with the big guy with even a bigger smile, Michaelwas called the Iron Man. Once you saw him playyou would know why. He played and played into thewee hours of the morning without taking a break. We took Michael down to the Mutual Musician Foundationlate one night after he finished playing here, andas we sat there trying to get the folks there to let himsit in with the band, a guy asked me “Does he knowhow to play”? I said “I hope so he has 5 or 6 albumsout”, so the guy said “What is his name”? I said“Michael Burks”. Then he said “Hell, why didn’t you saywho he was, get him up here”. So Michael got up andtore the roof off the place and he did it with such ease.He even turned his back at first to the audience andplayed for a few minutes then he turned around as if tosay “Now do you think I can play”! It was very cool justto sit and watch Michael tell his stories on his guitar. After we closed the place down, we all went toChubby’s on Broadway and had breakfast. Michaelhad gotten to the club for sound check around 6pmand we got him and Popcorn back around 7am thenext morning. And that was the start of a long friendshipwith the Iron Man.Michael and I always had a feud going about which ofus could cook the best fried bologna sandwich and thiswent on for years. (As a joke), one day when Michaelwas doing a gig here I went back in the kitchen andfried him a bologna sandwich, and he finally admittedthat it was a damn good sandwich. I never really knewwhether I just wore him down or he was really seriousand liked it. But he was always a good spirited manand he was fun to cut up with.Last year at the King Biscuit Fest, Junebug walked medown to the campground where Michael was stayingand as I snuck up on him, he turned around with a bigsmile saying “Man look at what the cat drug in”. Michaelwas always happy to see his friends. Last yearon the Blues Cruise, Michael found him a table by thebuffet and if he wasn’t on stage playing, that table iswere you would find him sitting and B’Sing with whomeverwanted to come sit down and talk with him. That’sthe Michael I will always remember. We love you Michael and miss you dearly.Where Are OurFront Porches?By Frank HicksThe other day, as I was taking Taj Mahal to the clubfor sound check, we got to talking about bands andartists that “Just go from one club to another playingand never knowing what it is like to do street gigs”where you have to charm the passersby in order tomake any money. It means “exposing your soul”, youremotions and making them feel what it is you are feeling. It sheds new light on singing and playing. Wealso passed by a little house in the neighborhood andsaw some kids sitting on the front porch just waving atthe cars going by. As we talked, I asked Taj “Do youremember when the houses had front porches, not justlandings?” He said, “Man I sure do, there is somethingreally relaxing doing nothing but sitting and watchingthe people and cars going by. You could sit there forhours and just do nothing!” That led to yet anotherquestion, “Do you remember when on Sunday morningsafter church, the family would all pile in the carand go for a Sunday drive?” Taj said “Man do I”! Weboth agreed that is what is wrong with some of the kidsgrowing up today. They have no sense of belonging, the family habits and values are just too busy nowadaysand we don’t have time for “wasting time” whichis a terrible mistake on our parts. Where are our frontporches?Frank Hicks is a biker and a business manand is the owner and founder of Knuckleheads.4 E-mail us at KCBLUESSOCIETY@GMX.COM KCBLUESSOCIETY.ORG

Famous Local MusiciansK C B l u e s N e w sby Ron “Turkey-Bone” BrownOur first article of the new Blues News column “Famous Local Musicians” was met with great appreciationby our readers therefore, this month we decided to feature a local personality who hasplayed with and has interviewed numerous famous musicians,,, On-air celebrity, Groovy GrantHopkins. Groovy Grant, as he is known, began his musical interest in 1961 when he attended Sumnerhigh school in Kansas under the teaching of Mr. R. N. Clark, the music teacher at the time. Helearned to play the alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. After high school he went to the UMKCConservatory of Music where he undertook the string bass or up-right bass, along with piano. Itwas not long before he joined up with his first band, the Modern Jazz Prophets. But surprisingly, hedid not play his first love, the saxophone, instead, he played the string bass; at the time, his friend,John Young played the tenor sax, along with local trumpeters Lester “Duck” Warner and John Marrow,Marvin Hollingshed on flute and Marvin Carr on drums. The jazz ensemble played local clubsand venues around the Kansas City area. They later became the back-up band for local great WildcatKelley who was a blues singer in the Rosedale and Argentine areas of Kansas. Groovy Grantlived at the 12th and Vine area and so of course he heard and sat-in with many of the famous musiciansand artists that passed through. His group later picked up with other big time local greatssuch as Jimmy Estell, the late Dr. Reginald Buckner and the likes of William “Bill” Freeman. Therewas no doubt the band was off and running and that their music was hot and soaring to newheights. But the Modern Jazz Prophets came to an unexpected and screeching halt…Groovy Grantbecame the victim of a Black-on-Black crime. At 12th and Paseo, Grant was critically woundedwhen he was shot in the head 3 times. He was hospitalized for days and underwent several operationsto remove the bullets from his right cheek, spine andskull… some fragments still remain. Needless-to-say, aftersuch a harrowing experience, Groovy Grant would play nomore. At this juncture in his life he entered into an HRC(Human Resources Corporation) program in 1972 at KPRSbroadcasting and was a broadcast engineer intern. Helearned to work the circuit board and facets of the radiobroadcasting industry. Grant said that this episode in his lifegave him a ‘Vision’… a vision of a portable machine onwheels that would play music, thus giving birth to the MobileDJ. He took his mobile apparatus, which consisted of twoturntables and two telescopic JBL speakers, on the road; toclubs, parties and provided music for various locations. Heoffered free music in the Leon Jordan Memorial Park everySunday afternoon for years with great response from the community; so much so that it landed hima job at local public radio station, KKFI. There he was allowed to play his different musical genres. In the past few years his program added three phases of music… Gospel, Jazz and Blues. Duringhis time at KKFI he has had many famous musicians on his show with interviews from artists suchas Lionel Hampton, Charles Brown, and greats like Marion Anderson, Mahalia Jackson, GeraldAustin and James Brown’s sister, Fanny Brown. Of late, Groovy Grant has begun another radioprogram called “OG’s Hang-out” which is aired weekly on KKFI. This format allows Grant to playmusic of artists and give their bio’s as well. His initial thought was to provide a segue of music peoplewant and to acknowledge the great heritage and history of Kansas City music. It is obvious thatGroovy Grant is a musical pioneer in his own right with his ideas, visions and music he loves…He’s paid his dues to play the blues.7 E-mail us at KCBLUESSOCIETY@GMX.COM kcbluessociety.org

K C B l u e s N e w sBy Chris ImmeleThis band of seasoned veteran musicians assembled its presentline up in late 2010. As three of the Crows had flown together invarious forms over the last 10 years, it was a natural process. They combine the best in Soulful Blues, Rhythm & Blues, andRock a Billy to present a unique and entertaining musical experience.Mo hails from St. Louis. and wails the blues on vocals and bluesharp. Mo has been fronting some of Kansas City’s top Blues andJazz bands since 1985 with a distinctive style all his own coveringblues, soul, rock and roll. Always bold, always entertaining,Mo is unpredictable and alwaysfun.Mo Paul—Harmonica &VocalsAl hails from Scott County, Mississippi. He started his musical life atage 8, singing on the radio in ruralGeorgia with his mom and dad’sgroup. He saw his first Rock & Rollband when he was 15, took hisfirst guitar lesson from his momand found himself playing the musiche’d fallen in love with ina group of high schoolfriends. In 1959, Al and hiscousin, Jimmy Harrell playedthe Louisiana Hayride Showand soon found themselvesin the legendary Sun RecordingStudio in Memphislaying down six tracks for theAlton Lott: Guitar, Bass &Vocalsiconic Sam Phillips. Sam saw them as the next big thing andreleased “No More Crying the Blues”(Sun #323) by Alton &Jimmy. They also released “Got It Made in the Shade” on theAce label and toured until Jimmy re-enlisted in the Navy. Thoughhis cousin gave up the road, the fire still burned inside Al and hestayed on the road 17 more years-13 with the Faux Pas Bandsharing the stage with Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Ace Cannon,Ronnie Dove, The Four Seasons and countless others. Hecame in off the road and didn’t pick up a guitar for the next 20years. Then in 2001, a Rock a Billy renaissance exploded inEurope and the USA so Al, once again, found himself workingagain with the likes of Little Richard, Carl Mann, Sonny West,Ferlan Husky, Frankie Ford, Jack Scott, Johnny Powers, DekeDickerson and others doing Rock a Billy Revivals all over the USand Europe. When he’s not touring, Al resides in Grandview, Mo3 blocks from his Crow bro Chris Immele (more on that later).Born in Denver, Doug began beating on stuff with sticks duringthe 1960’s and has never been able to shake the habit. Havingplayed in countless Rock & Roll, Jazz, and Blues bands, Doug’salso released two CDs of experimental music as “Hari KaraokeTrio of Doom” collaborating withNY guitarist Sal Cataldi. Doughas worked with Mo in severalprojects and with Chris in the11pc Rhythm and Blues bigband Full Blast. He was thenatural choice to be the backboneof the Old Crows. Doug isa writer, former newspaper reporterand magazine editor, fa-Doug Hitchcock: Drumsther of two and husband of one.Chris first picked up a guitar at 9yrs old. Three years later, hewas playing Surf music on Kansas City television alongside hisgrade school pal KC based and internationally renowned guitaristRod Fleeman. This early experience forged the musical futurefor Chris. After discoveringBlues, Soul and JimiHendrix, he formed a larger, more diverse band. TheAmelia Earhart MemorialFlying Band featured currentKansas City mayor SlyJames as lead vocalist. Beforeopening for JeffersonAirplane in 1969, the bandwas renamed ManchesterTrafficway and went throughChris Immele: Guitar, Bass, UprightBass, Moog Bass Pedals & Vocalsthe usual personnel changes. After Sly joined the Marines, theydisbanded and 19yr old Chris joined a 7pc show band “AmericanSound Ltd.” and toured the eastern seaboard and southernstates. After several smaller touring bands including 2yrs withKC’s Johnny Isom, Chris came home to start a family and newcareer in 1979. Flash forward to 1985 and the siren call of BigBand Rhythm & Blues drew him out of hibernation and he joinedseveral former members of American Sound in the 11pc “FullBlast”. After 25 years of regional shows including opening forJan & Dean, The Buckinghams, and Johnny Rivers, that bandstill plays out occasionally and most recently for his old pal SlyJames’ mayoral inaugural.During the Full Blast years, Chris would play side projects withMo and Doug. Then, while at a church function in Grandview,Chris met Al and the two discovered a common bond: they hadplayed the same southern supper club circuit during the mid-1970’s. Finally in late 2010, Al joined Chris, Mo, & Doug to form“The Old Crows”. Sitting down after one rehearsal, they startedadding up their years of musical experience and shockingly, itwas pushing 200yrs! Two centuries of Soulful Rhythm & Bluesand Rock a Billy! Another LegendGone!K C B l u e s N e w sBy Lil’ Joe SherrickA Bluzin’’ Good Timein MemphisBy Judy AbrahamDonald “Duck” DunnNovember 24, 1941—May 13, 2012This American Bass Guitarist, SessionMusician, Record Producer and songwriterwas notable for his 1960’s recordingswith Booker T & The MG’s.He was a session bassist for Stax Recordswhich specialized in blues andgospel-infused southern soul andMemphis soul music styles.Dunn also performed on recordingswith The Blues Brothers, Muddy Waters,Freddie King, Albert King, LevonHelm, Neil Young, Jerry Lee Lewis,Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, CreedenceClearwater Revival, Wilson Pickett,Sam & Dave, Guy Sebastian, RodStewart, Bob Dylan, Roy Buchanan,Steely Dan and Arthur Conley. He played himself in the 1980 hitmovie “The Blues Brothers” and receiveda lifetime achievement Grammyaward in 2007 for his work with BookerT & The MG’s.Another legend gone. This was our first year to attend theBlues Music Awards and what a treat itwas. The music was absolutely great!I don’t think there was anyone in theaudience more surprised when the veryfirst award to be presented that nightfor “The Best New Artist” went to ourvery own Samantha Fish! She walkedout onto that stage very elegant andgracious and she certainly made a lastingimpression on everyone. When Trampled Underfoot came onstage and performed, it was awesome. They were pumped and when Daniellesang her solo “Goodbye” she broughtthe house down! She received the onlystanding ovation of the night!I tell you that Samantha and Daniellewere the best dressed women thereand even the Blues Foundation commentedon how fabulous they looked. This was the best time we have hadand we will be going back each year.I would encourage you to put it on yourcalendar and I promise, you won’t bedisappointed.12 E-mail us at KCBLUESSOCIETY@GMX.COM kcbluessociety.org
