From KCBS President Lil’ Joe Sherrick
Keeping On With the Grand Tradition
...Kansas City Blues
Augusts' Character Quality
Yes, the dog days of summer seem to have arrived. The only thing that can get hotter is the great music that our
local musicians provide us here in Kansas City. We are so blessed to have so many talented musicians and venues
in the Kansas City area that it is not difficult to enjoy live blues 7 nights a week.
By the time you read this, the Blues Challenge will be underway and we have really great talent participating this
year. Whichever band wins, Memphis will be getting another great representation from Kansas City. The KCBS
website and KCBS Face book page will post winners of each round as they become available.
On August 23rd at 8 p.m. KCBS will be presenting Tad Robinson in concert at Knuckleheads Saloon, Tad is a
seven time BMA nominee and most recently as the 2011 Best Male Blues Artist. He has an incredible voice and
stage presence and you certainly will not want to miss this performance. “Tad places near the top of the list of the finest living singers of soul blues”
Downbeat Magazine
KCBS will also host The KC Blues Fest at Kaw Point on Sept. 29th in Kansas City Kansas. The headline act will be the legendary Big Bill Morganfield,
son of the great Muddy Waters, along with many great acts from Kansas City. Big Bill will be backed by KC Kelsey and his All Star band. This
first annual event will be held from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM and will be sponsored by Boulevard Brewery, Central States Beverage, Harvesters, KCK
Downtown Shareholders, and Friends of Kaw Point, just to name a few. Please watch our web site www.kcbluessociety.org for more details and
updates as new information becomes available. Friday night Sept. 28th there will be a pre-festival party at Freddy T’s in Olathe, featuring Big Bill
Morganfield with Levee Town. Tickets to the 28th event at Freddy T’s may be purchased from Freddy T’s or at the door. This is sure to be a sellout
so get your tickets early. Tickets for the festival may be purchased in advance for $15.00 through PayPal at www.kcbluessociety.org or at the gate
for $20.00. As a special offer, any donation to Harvesters at the gate will reduce a $20.00 ticket to $15.00. So plan to put on your party hats and
dancing shoes and come out to hear some great blues while helping a worthy cause.
We are still looking for donations for the “Raise the Roof” program with the Blues Foundation. This campaign is to support the Blues Hall of Fame
and is about giving a little back to the musicians that have given us so much. Your donation is tax deductible and is important to keep the Blues
alive. You can find information at www.blues.org or on our website at www.kcbluessociety.org. Have a great month and stay Coooool.
We are looking forward to seeing you out and about,
Famous Local Musician
by Ron “Turkey-Bone” Brown
K C B l u e s N e w s
In our search for musicians who have
played with famous people, we found a
local talent with whom you may not be
familiar, drummer, Bill Organ or "Billie
O". Billie said when he was about 5 yrs.
old, he taught himself to play drums by
beating on cardboard boxes. At age 19,
he traded his 1937 Coupe for his first
real set of drums. His first gig paid him
$60 a week and all the beer he could
drink. He began playing with a group
called the "By-Gones" of which Larry
Emmet had joined , a band started by
the bassist from "Larry Emmett & the
Sliders". They were later called the
"Roulettes", then named "Mac Truque"
and later re-named "Atlantic Express".
Bill said they were an Omaha,
Nebraska-based group and they would
commute back and forth between
Omaha and Kansas City. When in
Omaha, a young kid would always show
up where they
were playing
and that kid
was none other
than the late
B u d d y
Miles. Billie O
said, "Buddy
was like one of
my kids. He
was kind of a
roadie for our
band whenever
we played
Billy at Showcase
in Omaha". He told a story of how
Buddy Miles, at age 15, saved his money
and bought a bass drum pedal. He
asked Billie to show him how to play the
drums and invited him and the band to
his house. Buddy asked his parents if he
could have some friends over for a party
and the parents agreed, thinking he'd
have his schoolmates over. To their
surprise, a group of musicians showed
up on their door-steps. The band expected
a large spread of food and libations,
instead, Buddy had made fingersandwiches
and Kool-aid. Billie still
chuckles as he remembers the looks on
the parents' faces. Then in 1964, Billie
O moved to Oakland, where he played
Billy with Bob Carter Trio
weekly in a place called the Showcase
Lounge. There he played with Lou
Rawls, Esther Phillips, Johnny 'Guitar'
Watson and even the Coasters and Ike
and Tina Turner. Billie then joined up
with a group in the late 60’s called "The
Stragglers". They played on the same
stage at the well-known Monterey Jazz
Festival, with the likes of Janis Joplin
and Jimi Hendrix. During this period,
music was in a time of transition,
leaning towards Jazz, music that appealed
to both White and Black audiences.
In the 1970's, Billie decided to
join a band called "American Sound"
who played show-band type music. He
stayed with them for a few years. Then
in 1986, David VanFleet and Bill formed
an 18 piece Blues Band called Full-
Blast. Billie O returned to Kansas City
and got back in touch with his Omaha
friends and Buddy Miles. He was attempting
to start a group to be called
the "K C/Omaha Connection", a group
that would go back and forth between
Kansas City and Omaha and play alternating
week-ends. However, before the
group could get off the ground, Buddy
Miles died and that was to be his last
project. Since then, Billie Organ has
gone out of town to play with other famous
musicians and returned back
home to perform with local artists here
in Kansas City. He can be seen around
town sitting-in at the BB's Lawnside and
even the Phoenix at the historic 18th &
Vine area. As you can tell by his
achievements, Billie O has paid his dues
to play the blues. He attributes Buddy
Miles for straightening out his son from
drugs and alcohol!
New Release: Show of
Strength by Judy Abraham
This afternoon as I was picking up the
mail, this envelope was there which
means one thing, a CD new release. I
was excited as it is always fun to listen
to the new releases but when I opened
this one up and realized it was the last
release from Alligator
Records for Michael “Iron Man” Burkes a
wave of emotions that I wasn’t expecting
rushed over me and it took me several
minutes to be able to move forward.
Michael’s final album “Show of
Strength” (on which he wrote or cowrote
five of the album’s 12 tracks) is a
very special CD indeed. I can tell you
that you will want to add this CD to your
collection of music because it is so
“Michael” and it is very special. Michael
felt very strongly about “Feel Like Going
Home”, Charlie Rich’s moving song
about the end of life, which is even
more significant now with the sudden
passing of Michael.
I am so glad that Bruce Iglauer made
the decision to leave this album as it
was intended, "a living, breathing statement,
sent straight from Michael’s heart
and soul”. Although Michael is not here,
the music he recorded is indeed his
show of his immense strength and spirit.
It will live on, confirming forever his
status as one of the greatest bluesmen
of his generation.”Thank you Michael,
what a wonderful gift to give us at this
time as we continue to miss you dearly.
You were indeed a wonderful giant of
a man. Release date is August 21.
Since the late 1800’s, the Phoenix Hotel has always been rich
with history and atmosphere.
Between Frank Valerius’ Saloon on the first floor and Madame
Law’s Brothel on the second and third floors, the Phoenix Hotel
was never a dull scene.
Twenty-two years ago, the nightclub we know today as “The
Phoenix” was born and has always remained a jazz club. After
being closed in 2007 and most of 2008, Matt Jones re-opened
“The Phoenix” with a fresh start and some new ideas.
The first two years it remained solely a Jazz Club but the tourists
and locals wanted something more! In the beginning of 2011,
blues musicians made their way into the line-up and the word
An Abundance of Blues!
by Brock Alexander
Stop! Everyone take a moment and reminisce about the good ol’ days prior to iPhones, laptops, and DJs. Remember when people, not computers
played live music Remember when audiences expected to be entertained by the group of men/women on stage, rather than their
Smartphone's Or when couples hit the dance floor to the seductive groove of nameless musicians rather than celebrities with computers (who
do a fantastic job ‘acting’ like DJs...pun intended). I wish I could continue on about how great those times were
and how terrible things have become, but I never knew those times -- I grew up in the early ‘90s.
Those times are left only in the stories of old-timers who lived them and in the dreams of dreamers like myself.
However, I am also here to tell the opposite side of the same story.
Music has always been a guiding force in my life. Blessed to be brought up in a very nurturing musical environment,
I have been enjoying, studying, and performing music since age 5. I have also been blessed to have travelled
and lived in some amazing places, met some amazing people, and encountered amazing opportunities. Yet
through every fad, gag, and gimmick, through all of life’s peaks and valleys, regardless of my address, there has
been Blues music. In my opinion, there is no greater catharsis than what Blues does for me and my soul.
“...there is no greater
catharsis than what
Blues does for me and
my soul.”
A companion for the past 12 years, I have played the Blues wherever life has taken me. Blues jams are abundant
in nearly every city in America. Unlike every other genre of music, the Blues are both abundant and accessible -- meaning anyone from casual
listener to professional musicians can find a reason to pay attention. Trust me, even though you won’t see it on MTV or TMZ the Blues is alive
and well in Hollywood!
Life has dropped me in Kansas City since December of 2011 and while I’m sure we have our fair share of fist-pumping, DJ’ed dance clubs, Kansas
City maintains it’s reputation as a thriving environment for Blues music and musicians. Just look at the long list of Blues musicians and
groups in the Kansas City area! Not to mention the National, as well as International recognition garnered to acts like Samantha Fish, Trampled
Under Foot, and Levee Town.
Next time you think ‘there’s nothing to do tonight’ or you feel like staying home and watching last week’s SNL on your iPad, remember that there
are still lots of dreamers out there who don’t believe in music from computer speakers -- on behalf of my fellow musicians, I would like to say
that WE are still out here, unloading and loading gear, playing sweaty sets for sometimes empty rooms and tips, dreaming the only way WE
know how -- with the music alive and in front of you!
It might take more effort to put on your ‘high heel sneakers’ or your ‘wig hat’ on your head, but instead of dreaming about the good old days, or
watching them on YouTube, why not live in the present day -- where myself, and my fellow musicians are rejoicing and smiling in the sounds of
what’s regarded as melancholy music.
K C B l u e s N e w s
By Danny Powell
It is quickly approaching that time of year when one of my favorite
Blues festivals will transform a
small town of 5600 people into a classy
family event that will draw nearly 9000
people over two days. So I decided to
go to Paola Kansas and meet with two
of the guys that helped create and still
help run this successful ”Paola Roots
Festival” for the past 23 (that’s right)
23 years.
I showed up about 15 minutes early and as I was sitting in the
Paola Park Square waiting for Gary Patillo and Lee Mott to arrive,
I could not help but notice how peaceful it was and thought in a
few weeks, thousands of people of all ages will be present to
enjoy what these two gentleman, along with a great Roots Committee
and this community has accomplished. As we sat down to
talk I asked them what was the catalyst for putting this together.
Gary explained “It all started when my family had a funeral. After
the funeral I got together with some of the family members
and said the only time we get together is when someone dies or
gets married. So we decided to get together every year and just
have a good time.” The first two years the event took place as a
Potluck Dinner in Wallace Park and then to try to expand the
event, it was moved to the Park Square. “I wanted it to be more
of a community family event, not to be considered a festival for
just the African American Community,” Gary said. Lee got involved
in 1993. “I will never forget that day, Gary and I barely
knew each other but I knew he was trying to put this Roots festival
together. At the time I was having some Blues dances at
the Legion Hall. I was working for the Cable TV Company on the
corner of the square when I saw Gary pull up to the stoplight in
front of our office. I ran over and jumped in the passenger seat
of his car and said hey man I want to get involved with your
festival. He said ok, you can be the stage manager and I started
booking music groups for the event,” Mott said.
The first several years were very lean and there was some resistance.
The first two years in Wallace Park music consisted of a
Boom Box. In 1993 after moving to the Park Square, local Kansas
City acts were introduced that included such greats as Abbe
Locke, Leon Estelle and Sonny Kenner. Lee remembers a year
when Fast Johnny Ricker was playing on the gazebo and the
crickets kept getting louder and louder as if they were trying to
be louder than the festival’s PA System. “The crickets started
coming on stage and jumping on the musicians. I swear the
crickets thought the Gazebo with all its lights and loud music
was actually their Mother!” There were early years when the
Roots Committee did not know how they would be able to pay
the performers and one year Lee paid out of his own pocket. “I
can remember sitting on Gary’s couch and telling those who
were involved that someday we’ll bring National Acts to the festival.”
As the years rolled by the community began to realize that
this event was more than just a small event for the few. “It was
our goal to create a community event that all families of the
community could celebrate their family “roots” and have a good
time,” Gary explained. “I can remember talking to Mayor Floyd
Grimes back then and telling him that this thing was not going to
go away.”
The festival has now evolved into a major event that includes
great national acts and the East Central State BBQ Championship.
This Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event includes
65 to 70 contestants with the winners going to the prestigious
American Royal BBQ Invitational. “We do all of this without
any huge major sponsorships because we want to keep the
integrity of the community and family involvement,” said Gary.
Another great program is the Roots Festival Blue Moon Scholarship
fund. The Roots Festival has established this scholarship for
young people to continue in their own path in arts. One of this
year’s recipients is a young lady that told Lee that she had been
coming to the festival with her parents ever since she could remember
and the festival had a major impact on the career path
that she was now taking. “That really meant a lot to all of us on
the Committee, even brought a little tear to my eye,” Lee said.
Gary and Lee attribute much of the success to the Roots Committee
members. “We could not do this without them,” said
Gary. “We may have disagreements about things from time to
time, but at the end of day we all come together and put on a
successful event. In 23 years we have not had any major problems.”
So on August 24 and 25, all you Blues Fans bring your
lawn chairs and your coolers to the Park Square in Paola Kansas
for one of the best festivals in this part of the country. All of the
Roots Festival Committee and the Community will welcome you
as part of their family.
Tom Hall, long-time entertainer in Kansas City and a founding
member of The Cold 45 Band will begin chemotherapy.
The Kansas City Blues Society will sponsor a benefit for him and
his family to be held at
Knuckleheads Saloon
Sunday afternoon September
Can Blues Be
Progressive
by A. Alexander Harrison
That, my friends, is a weighted question.
In truth, it depends entirely on your definition
of the word blues. If to you, a I, IV, V
shuffle with a, AABA rhyme scheme is blues,
but a II, V, I high-speed swing is not, then
you aren’t likely going to be into the idea of
blues as genre making progress.
The simple fact that many fans like to ignore
is that the blues is no longer a popular form of
music. With the exception of a few luminaries,
such as Gary Clark Jr., Joe Bonamassa, The
Black Keys and The White Stripes (yes, Jack
White IS a blues man. Agree or get past it.)
Nobody in mainstream music makes bluesrooted
music. At least not openly, anyway.
I was recently subjected to a Lady Gaga song
titled “Teeth.” The presence of electronic instruments,
frighteningly raunchy lyrics, multiple
vocal tracks, and general pop sound is
enough to make any blues fan frantically
reach for the power button on their radio, at
the risk of bursting into flames. If one were to
summon the courage to actually listen to the
song, however, one would hear that it is laced
with blues. The entire vocal melody is built
around minor 7s and 9s. The song has an interesting
rising bridge not entirely dissimilar to
a IV, I, V blues chorus, and whether or not
you wish to admit it, the fact is that Lady
Gaga sings with quite a bit of soul.
Granted, I’m certainly not suggesting that
anybody reading this particular periodical go
out and listen to this song, or for that matter,
to Lady Gaga at all. The point I’ve been attempting
to make is this – blues is surviving in
the strangest way.
But trying to get the genre to progress is a
K C B l u e s N e w s
very different thing from trying to keep it
alive. To do this, purists are going to have to
compromise. Most guitarists trying to attract a
blues fan base, for example, are deathly afraid
of the gain control on their amp. Effects pedals
are also taboo. This is bad news for anyone
trying to bring their blues sound into a
mainstream audience. Today’s crowds are
used to bands making a very big sound.
Recently, QRO Magazine sent me to the St.
Louis date on the Vans Warped Tour. There, I
witnessed a band called Miss May, I plug their
guitarist into an array of eighteen Orange
4x12 amp cabinets. Each of these speakers is
roughly waist high, and provides more sound
than any musician could ever want. This is the
degree of excess in volume and power that
drives modern bands. To make a reemergence,
blues has got to be turned up.
So would plugging Nick Schnebelen into Kirk
Hammett’s (of Metallica) amplifier and standing
him up on stage with players like Les Claypool
and Neil Peart create the kind of sound
needed to jump-start the genre again It’s
possible, but unlikely. Just like always, it’s going
to take a Stevie Ray Vaughan – Someone
who makes virtuosity hip again. That isn’t to
say we literally need someone who sounds
like Stevie. We’ve got plenty of those already.
One thing is certain though. To be what it
once was, blues as a genre needs a new torch
-bearer. Until we find him/her, we’re going to
be sticking with BB’s, Quasimodo, Knuckleheads,
Freddy T’s and The Phoenix for a
while.
