y Sarah BakerPrayers are answered anddreams do come true. Justask vocation directorsSisters Linda Markway andKathleen Eiler. Last April, after many months of prayer and reflection,God’s will was done and they opened thedoors to the St. Louis province’s first everhouse of discernment—The Fiat House—a home for women on a spiritual journeyof discernment searching for God’s call intheir lives.“It’s not just a house,” says Markway. “It’sserving a real purpose that we are seeing inyoung people at this time. It’s serving a need.”Named after the Blessed Mother’s “fiat”or response to the Annunciation (“Beholdthe handmaid of the Lord; be it done untome according to thy word” Lk 1:38), theFiat Community was inspired by a bestpractice from the National Religious VocationConference/CARA Report. The ideaalso stemmed from discussions with fellowvocation directors and young adults who,in search of such houses, desire time, spaceThe Fiat House answers the needs of young womenseeking discernment through community living.and support as they reflect on the directionof their lives.“They don’t know what’s next [aftergraduation] and don’t want to lose thatpiece of community they had in college attheir Catholic universities,” Markway states.“It’s not just a house. It’sserving a real purpose that weare seeing in young people atthis time. It’s serving a need.”~Sister Linda MarkwayThe Fiat House is unique as thereare no other houses like it in the St. Louisarea. Specialized houses offer live-in serviceopportunities, such as serving homelesswomen and children, but none have theintentionality of community like that ofthe Fiat.“The Fiat Community is a sacredspace for young women to find the supportthey need to continue discerning God’scall through faith sharing, intentionalcommunity living and service opportunities,”says Markway. One point Eiler is also quick to mention,“The community is not only for thosediscerning religious life. It’s for any vocationwhether it be in service, in marriage or inreligious life.”The Fiat House is located in theformer convent of St. Andrew’s parish inSouth County St. Louis. Living along withthree Sisters of St. Joseph (Markway, Eilerand Sarah Heger, a fifth grade teacher atMarian Middle School) are two formaldiscerners. Aisa Rocha is a nursing studentat Saint Louis University, and DeannaMolosky is a support for a communitymental health agency. They all gather for evening dinner, prayer, socializing and discerning. Eachnight the members share the task of cookingdinner and leading the group prayer, whichis as diverse as our members. Heger says,“From devotionals and Liturgy of the Hoursto yoga and art, I think we’ve all experiencedGod in some new way this year.”4 Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet

Sister Kathleen Eilerdidn’t have any clear idea of what was going to happen andI wanted to be open to whatever did happen. I had a littlehesitation about living with people in their 20s because I don’tfeel I know their world and where they are coming from.I could easily be their grandma! But, I have grown to appreciatetheir freedom, their free spirit, and their laughter. In a way I envythem. I wish I could be that carefree.Sister Linda MarkwayThis experience has been a big eye opener. My idea of howthings would go was way off base. I thought our discernerswould want their time and space to get settled, but theywanted to start things sooner. Also, being in religious life, I havelived a certain way that they have not experienced. Livingtogether has helped me realize the importance of attentivenessto young people and how difficult it is for them to identify with an oldercommunity. Their needs have also helped and will continue to help me be inministry with the younger people again.Members of the Fiat Community gather for eveningprayer and reflection. They also have “community night” afew times a month that includes watchingmovies, playing cards, sitting around the firepit and singing songs with guitar accompaniment.Rocha and Molosky also each meet aspiritual director of their choice and discussdiscerning a vocation with Markway, Eilerand Heger in shared conversation.“We are a community of women eagerto understand our call, to speak our fiat intrust and love, and to support each memberin her various stages of development andlife commitment,” shares Heger.Great things are already on the horizonfor the Fiat Community, as plans have beenmade to open a second house of discernmentwithin the next year.yTo learn more about these opportunities, contactSister Linda Markway at 314-678-0315 orlmarkway@csjsl.org or Sister Kathleen Eilerat 314-678-0305 or keiler@csjsl.org or visitwww.csjsl.org.Sister Sarah HegerIt’s exciting to have a space that provides focused quiet, prayer, discernment and community. I get the best of manyworlds—I live with sisters and with women close to my age. Ican share my vocation in an intimate way with women who arelooking at religious life. With Fiat, while able to offer some of ourgifts as CSJs to women on that life search, we are also alloweda glimpse into the lives of dear neighbors turned friends. These women andthe needs of the world, each in a unique way, give us insights that keep usstretched and always aware.Deanna MoloskyUpon receiving my graduate degree, I wanted the chanceto live with other people and concentrate on faith andpersonal reflection, specifically how my faith life is enmeshed inmy work as a social worker, and the Fiat Community incorporatesall of those. This experience has allowed me the time andsupport needed to transition from one phase of my life to thenext. For others seeking discernment, follow your heart and don’t be afraid totake risks. Taking time to figure out your passions in life is the healthiest andsmartest thing anyone could do.Aisa RochaThe Fiat House offers me a safe place for discernment anda living situation where I can challenge myself to balanceschool, community and life. I have been able to discern that Godis not calling me to religious life, but I have yet to discern a “yes”to the married or single life. Being here has also challengedme to venture outside myself. I embarked on this journey withcomplete trust in God, and though I may not know the exact reason forguiding me here, I do know I am being guided to where God wants me to be.Connections • Spring/Summer 20125

Avila University’s Spiritis not a spectatorsport,” says Ron Slepitza,“LearningPh.D., CSJA, president ofCSJ-sponsored Avila University in KansasCity, Mo. “At Avila, we want to engagestudents in and out of the classroom. Andwe know service work is a powerful toolfor learning.”Learning through service has been anongoing mission at Avila. And its effortshave not gone unnoticed. For the fourthstraight year Avila was named to thePresident’s Higher Education CommunityService Honor Roll. In the 2010-11academic year, Avila students, facultyand staff performed more than 200,000community service and service-learninghours at 200-plus agencies. The university’s students, facultyand staff donate their time and talentsto hospitals, churches, schools, retirementcenters and health clinics. They haveworked at a variety of organizations, fromHabitat for Humanity to the Girl Scoutsto Harvesters Food Network. For the past ten years, the universityhas had a unique relationship withHarvesters through a program of servicedesigned for incoming freshmen. Priorto the first week of classes, all freshmenwork as volunteers for one day atHarvesters.“The students pretty much takeover the warehouse,” says Dana Bolar, volunteer services manager at Harvesters.“They come enthused and energizedand are very respectful while they arehere. They pack backpacks with food forchildren, assemble care packages for ourelderly clients and sort produce. Theywork hard and leave tired.”This past year, two senior computerscience students spent more than 95hours developing an online order fulfillmentsystem for Harvesters.“One of our goals at Harverstersis to go green,” says Sarah Biles, communicationsmanager. “This programhas allowed us to go paperless to someextent, and has had an impact on ourefficiency.”Another Avila student also developed8 Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet

Marie Joan Harris, CSJ, Ph.D.Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Avila Universityan instructional video training programfor volunteers which, Harvesters hopes toimplement in the near future.Harvesters volunteer, ShawnaDowning, a communications andmusical theatre major from Coffeyville,Kan., believes the university’s approachto service work is also a great service tothe students. “It is important for studentsto get involved in community servicebecause it allows them to gain hands-on,real-world experience in what it meansto help others and how one person canpositively change other peoples’ lives,”says Downing. “It teaches humility, compassion and understanding. Andwhen students get involved, the impactis much greater.”Downing is currently a volunteerwith Big Brothers Big Sisters of KansasCity.Spring Break 2011 found fivestudents, President Slepitza, Director ofMission Effectiveness and Campus MinistriesDave Armstrong and social workprofessional Donna Devine, far fromsunny beaches or snow-covered peaks. This group traveled to Bethlehem Farm,a low-income Appalachia community inWest Virginia dedicated to communityservice and teaching sustainable living. The Avila volunteers left the accoutrementsof their electronic world behindto help families with farming and homerepair in a prayerful, respectful way. Itwas a week of simple living and givingback.Personal experience inspires somestudents’ pledges. Following the deathof his father from brain cancer, BenSudbeck, a senior at Avila’s School ofNursing, decided to start a campuschapter of Colleges Against Cancer(CAC). Sudbeck plans to get studentsinvolved in working at Hope Lodge,a home-away-from-home for cancerpatients traveling to Kansas City fortreatment.Sister Marie Joan Harris, CSJ,Ph.D., provost and vice president foracademic affairs at Avila, sees the missionand charism of the CSJ communitycarried forward through the students.“This is exactly what the early sisters didand continue to do in their communitiesConnections • Spring/Summer 20129

Service work is a wonderfulway for students to use the gifts, talentsand knowledge they’ve learned in theclassroom and to understand how it willbe used in the broader community.”“In May,” Harris adds, “we havea group of senior students who willtravel to Guatemala. They will be totallyimmersed in the culture, living withfamilies and working for a women’scooperative. This will be a transformationalexperience for these students.”Community outreach is a basictenet of the CSJ mission, and AvilaUniversity is dedicated to incorporatingthat principle into the fabric of everystudent’s college experience.“We want to be part of the laceworkof connections,” says Slepitza. “We10 Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet“We want to live the CSJcharism of serving the dearneighbor. And in doing so weenlighten students to an awareness oftheir own potential to make a differencein the community in which they live.”From the receiving end of Avila’sgenerosity, Bolar sees this awarenesscome to life. “I think the studentsreally value working at Harvesters asone of their first experiences at Avila. It provides a great team environmentwhere they meet other new studentswhile giving something back to thecommunity. And what’s really great isthat many of them come back later ontheir own to do more volunteer work.”And from the student’s perspective, the opportunity to make the communityan extension of the classroom providesan invaluable learning lesson. SaysDowning, “I’ve learned a tremendousamount from my service work. But themost important thing I’ve learned wasthat our effort, as small as it may haveseemed, was helping a large number offamilies, children and elderly people inthe Kansas City area.”yTo learn more about Avila University, visit www.avila.edu.

Donor SpotlightFrom the first day Mary Kay Braccio and Joe Prinster,Jr. met in the baritone horn line of Universityof Notre Dame’s marching band and to each day oftheir nearly 30-year marriage, the couple has sharedtheir lives and love of community—together. When they aren’t working, Mary Kay, a school psychologist, and Joe, a civil engineer, are busy raising three childrenfrom their “friendly yellow house” in Boulder, Colo. Ana,adopted from Romania, enjoys tennis and attends St. NorbertCollege in Green Bay, Wis. Teresa, a sophomore in highschool, loves softball, skiingand country music. Sixthgrader Christopher, theiryoungest who was adoptedfrom China, plays saxophone, piano and lacrosse.Busy with homework, music practice, events andactivities, they still make timefor volunteering, an importantpart of their family life.“We seem to always bevolunteering for the organizationsthat we care about orthat benefit our family andcommunity,” says Mary Kay.Their involvement withthe Sisters of St. Joseph ofCarondelet began throughSister Marianne Keena, CSJ,who was the director of AdultReligious Education at theirparish, Sacred Heart ofMary in Boulder. “I vividlyremember Sister Marianne coming into church at the endof Mass dressed in a clown costume, carrying a bunch ofballoons and making all kinds of racket about adult religiouseducation,” Mary Kay says.Their work on the RCIA team brought them closer toSister Marianne, who became a part of their family, participatingin all of their children’s baptisms and first communions, andsupporting them through the loss of their first child. With the recommendation of Sister Marianne and theencouragement of Sister Mary Ann Mulligan, Joe joined theDevelopment Advisory Council (DAC) of the Sisters of16 Sisters of St. Joseph of CarondeletCommitted to CommunityMary Kay Braccio and Joe Prinster, Jr.By Patricia Cassens, CFRE, CSJABelow, Joe Prinster and Mary Kay Braccio with their children, from left toright: Teresa, Christopher and Ana, along with family pet, Bodi.St. Joseph of Carondelet in 2008; in 2011 he stepped up to bethe DAC’s first chairman. The DAC was established to offeradvice, guidance and assistance to the Development Office, which seeks funding for the mission and ministries of the sisters.“Anyone who works with the sisters has to be preparedto deal with their enthusiasm and optimism,” Joe says. “Thesisters are the most upbeat group of people I know! The CSJcharism of service to the dear neighbor is such a powerfulguiding principle. It permeates all that the sisters do in theirwork and infuses love into even the simplest tasks.”“The CSJ charism of service to the dear neighboris such a powerful guiding principle.”~Joe PrinsterAs a member of theDAC, Joe is working firstand foremost to ensure thatthe province retirementfunds are sufficient for theneeds of the sisters. “Theaging of the CSJs over thenext five years will bringchanges as many of thesisters adjust their lifestylesand work capacities.”Joe also focuses onensuring that each gift makesa direct impact on charitableneeds. “I know your donationwill benefit the work of thesisters, not for administrativefundraising costs. The sistersare very frugal and efficient intheir fundraising efforts.”Recently, Mary Kayand Joe each made a directimpact on the mission andministry of the Sisters ofSt. Joseph of Carondelet through a charitable gift annuity.Mary Kay says, “Throughout our marriage it has beenimportant for us to give back to our community, and supportorganizations that are making the world better and sharingGod’s love in the world.”A charitable gift annuity is one of many ways you cansupport the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and receiveincome during your lifetime.
