Theme Sessions
1. From Contraction to Extension: The Mesozoic to
Cenozoic Tectonic Evolution of the Northern Great Basin
(2 oral and 1 poster sessions). Joseph P . Colgan, USGS,
jcolgan@usgs .gov, Chris Henry, University of Nevada, Reno
chenry@unr .edu; Victoria E . Langenheim, zulanger@usgs .gov,
Allen J . McGrew, Allen .McGrew@notes .udayton .edu,
David M . Miller, dmiller@usgs .gov .
This session focuses on the integrated Mesozoic-Cenozoic
tectonic history of the Great Basin, especially the interplay
of continental contraction, extension, and magmatism . The
region is noted for its hinterland core complexes, magmatic
history, thrust belts, extensional tectonics, and basins . New
geologic mapping, structural analyses, geo- and thermochronology,
and thermobarometry and petrology have introduced
new ideas and controversies .
2 . Interactions of Climate, Tectonics, and Sedimentation
in Cenozoic Basins of the Basin and Range (oral session).
Thomas Hickson, University of St . Thomas, St . Paul,
MN tahickson@stthomas .edu, Melissa Lamb, University
of St . Thomas, St . Paul, MN malamb@stthomas .edu,
Paul Umhoefer, Northern Arizona University, Geology,
Paul .Umhoefer@nau .edu .
Sedimentary basins provide perhaps the single best opportunity
to develop an understanding of how extensional
landscapes evolved over long timescales under conditions
of changing climate and complex tectonic deformation patterns,
yet—when compared to compressional settings—little
work has been completed that addresses these interactions .
New lithostratigraphic, chemostratigraphic, and stable isotopic
data, combined with high-resolution geochronology
from extensional basins of the Basin and Range have begun
to address this disparity . This session focuses on sedimentary
basin research in extensional settings in the Basin and Range
that address new hypotheses, techniques, or interpretations of
landscape evolution throughout the Cenozoic .
3 . Deep Crustal Perspectives on Cordilleran Orogenesis
(oral session). Chris G . Mattinson, Department of Geological
Sciences, Central Washington University, mattinson@
geology .cwu .edu; Thomas D . Hoisch, Department of Geology,
Northern Arizona University, Thomas .Hoisch@nau .edu .
Exhumed rocks of the Cordilleran orogen record deep
crustal processes associated with terrane accretion, crustal
shortening, and extension during the growth of the North
American continent . New dating of mineral growth and
cooling histories are changing our understanding of the timing
and distribution of orogenic belts, and of the tectonic
processes that created them . This session focuses on the use
of rock record to constrain aspects of orogenesis such as:
(1) timing of thrusting and/or exhumation, (2) metamorphic
pressure-temperature paths during crustal shortening and
extension, and (3) relationships between deep and shallow
crustal processes .
4 . Neoproterozoic-Early Paleozoic Tectonic and Climatic
Evolution of the Cordilleran Margin (oral session). Carol
Dehler, Utah State University, carol .dehler@usu .edu, Paul
Link, Idaho State University, Adolph Yonkee, Weber State
University .
Many questions remain about the timing and nature of
the rift-drift transition and related climate change of western
Laurentia during Neoproterozoic time . This session focuses
on all pertinent data sets with an emphasis on geochronology
and stratigraphy .
5 . Assembling North America: Precambrian Basement
Tectonic and Geochemical Evolution of Laurentia (oral
and poster sessions). David A . Foster, University of Florida,
dafoster@ufl .edu, Darrell J . Henry, David W . Mogk, Paul A .
Mueller .
This session focuses on recent studies of the Archean and
Proterozoic provinces and basins of southern Laurentia, and
novel ways of studying ancient rocks . Our understanding of
the assembly and evolution of the North American basement
over the past decade has benefited from new mapping efforts
integrated with a vast amount of new structural, petrologic,
geochemical and geochronological data, and geophysical
studies including those of EarthScope .
6 . Geology and Hydraulic Properties of Reservoirseal
Systems with Implications for CO2 Sequestration
and Hydrogeology (oral session). Alvar Braathen, UNIS,
Norway and Utah State University, alvarb@unis .no; Jim
Evans, Utah State University, Jim .evans@usu .edu; Elizabeth
Petrie, Utah State University .
Recent studies in a wide range of settings have revealed
a rich record of fluid flow and sealing related to CO2 and
other fluids .
7 . Petrologic and Geodynamic Perspectives on Non-Arc
Volcanism in the Western United States (oral session).
John Shervais, Utah State University, john .shervais@usu .edu;
Tony Lowry, Utah State University, tony .lowry@usu .edu .
Volcanic activity that cannot be directly related to a current
or former subduction system is common in the western United
States . Such activity includes the Yellowstone-Snake River hotspot
system, the High Lava plains of eastern Oregon, and volcanic
activity within the Great Basin, to name a few examples . This
session seeks to examine the petrologic and geodynamic roots of
these volcanic systems, integrating new data from geochemistry,
geophysics, and field geology in order to better understand their
development . The impact of new Earthscope generated data will
be especially important, and contributions that combine data
from multiple disciplines are encouraged .
8 . Geochemistry of Igneous Rocks: From Small Scales to
Big Pictures (oral and poster sessions). Adam Kent, Oregon
State University Adam .kent@science .oregonstate .edu .
Fine scale geochemical measurements made by electron and
ion microprobes, LA-ICP-MS, FTIR and other techniques provide
important information about igneous rocks . A continuing
challenge is to relate these small-scale measurements to larger
length scales relevant to field studies of magmatic systems . We
seek contributions from workers interested in applying smallscale
measurements of minerals, glasses and inclusions to broader
questions confronting igneous petrology, including studies of
magmatic fluxes and crustal evolution, and development of large
igneous provinces and batholith-scale intrusive complexes .
Workers who incorporate small-scale chemical information into
regional scale multidisciplinary studies of magmatic systems are
particularly encouraged to participate .
2011 GSA Rocky Mountain and Cordilleran Section Meeting 25

9 . The Mammalian Fossil Record of Utah (oral session).
Beth Townsend, Midwestern University, btowns@
midwestern .edu; Paul Murphey, South Dakota Natural
History Museum, pmurphey@sdnhm .org; Anthony Friscia,
University of California, Los Angeles tonyf@ucla .edu .
From diminutive Mesozoic multituberculates to the awe
inspiring thunderbeasts of the Eocene, rock units in Utah continue
to yield critically important fossils that provide scholars with
the opportunity to shed light on crucial periods of mammalian
evolution and ancient environments . This session highlights current
research on mammalian paleontology in Utah that includes,
but is not restricted to, aspects of paleobiology, biostratigraphy
Field Trips
Pre-Meeting
1 . Tectonomagmatic Evolution of Distinct Arc Terranes
within Blue Mountains Province, Oregon and Idaho. 15–17
May; US$395 per person . C . J . Northrup, Mark Schmitz, and
Gene Kurz, Boise State University .
The Blue Mountains Province was constructed in
Mesozoic time by the amalgamation and accretion of two
volcanic arcs (Olds Ferry and Wallowa terranes) along with
associated accretionary prism sediments . This trip examines
key field relationships and discuss recent results of highprecision
U-Pb geochronology and tracer isotope geochemistry
that help to illuminate and distinguish the tectonic
history of these two arc terranes . We will compare/contrast
their volcano-plutonic records and reconstruct their tectonic
and paleogeographic evolution from upper Paleozoic through
early Cretaceous time . The trip examines the interplay
between intra-arc magmatic and deformational processes and
tectonic controls on the temporal patterns of plutonic and
volcanic magmatism in both arc systems .
NOTE: the field trip begins and ends in Boise, ID,
not Logan, UT, where the rest of the meeting will occur .
Participants planning to attend both the trip and the meeting
will need to schedule a three-leg itinerary, including
travel from Boise to Logan, UT, on May 17th . We will return
to Boise no later than 1 p .m . on May 17th, so participants
can catch late afternoon or evening flights . Driving distance
from Boise to Logan is approximately 300 miles (driving time
~4 .5 hours) .
2 . Karst Hydrogeology of the Bear River Range in the
Logan Canyon Area, Northern Utah. 17 May; US$60 per
person . Larry Spangler, USGS Salt Lake City .
This trip provides an overview of the hydrogeology of an
alpine karst in the Logan Canyon area, east of Logan, Utah .
We are focusing on the major springs discharging along the
Logan River, the principal base-level stream in the northern
part of the Bear River Range . Topics of discussion include
groundwater flow paths and travel times, influence of the
Logan Peak Syncline on groundwater movement, karst and
cave development, and water chemistry . Snow permitting, we
will visit Tony Grove Lake, situated in the recharge area for
much of the water discharging from the karst springs .
3 . Cryogenian (“Sturtian”) Diamictite, Cap Carbonate,
and Volcanic Rocks of Southeastern Idaho. 17 May; US$60
per person . Josh Keeley, Carol Dehler, Paul Link, Adolph
Yonkee, Katie Kirkham .
This one day field trip explores metabasalt, diamictite,
cap carbonate, and other facies of the Neoproterozoic
Pocatello Formation between Logan, UT and Pocatello, ID .
All stops show sampling sites of new geochronologic data,
which has implications for regional and global correlations,
and the timing of rifting and glaciation along the western
Laurentian margin . Driving time is about 3 hours round trip .
Hiking includes one ~800 foot steep climb and an optional
second similar climb .
Post-Meeting
4 . Neogene Drainage Development of the Portneuf,
Big Lost, and Snake River Systems, eastern Idaho. 20–21
May; US$155 per person . Paul K . Link, David W . Rodgers,
Glenn T . Thackray, Idaho State University; Mary K .V .
Hodges, USGS .
This trip examines the Big Lost River from its headwaters
north of the Pioneer core complex above Sun Valley
downstream across the central Idaho thrust belt and Eocene
Challis volcanic field . Our themes will be drainage capture
and topographic change documented by detrital zircon data
on Recent and Neogene fluvial deposits . The first stops are
high in the Pioneer Mountains at the head of glaciated Trail
Creek Canyon, which were part of the Big Lost River system
until the Pleistocene . After visiting the site of drainage diversion,
we will view the Lost River normal fault with a view of
1983 earthquake features . We will then examine Miocene
rhyolites as old as 12 Ma that display spectacular primary
features at Howe Point above the Big Lost River Sinks on
the southern end of the Lemhi Range . The last stop is on
the lower Big Lost River on the Idaho National Laboratory
where interactions of drainage changes, basalt flows and climate
changes controlled the Neogene history of the Big Lost
River and the subsurface architecture of the Big Lost Trough,
a silled volcanosedimentary basin .
5 . New Investigations of Pleistocene Glacial and Pluvial
Records in Northeastern Nevada. 21–23 May; US$330 per
person . Jeffrey S . Munroe, Middlebury Colleg; Benjamin J .C .
Laabs, SUNY Geneseo .
We are visiting classic glacial and pluvial localities in
northeastern Nevada to examine records of the last glacialinterglacial
transition, starting at the recently dated type
locality for the Angel Lake Glaciation in the East Humboldt
Range . The second day are stops at recently dated shoreline
features of pluvial Lakes Clover and Franklin, including a
visit to the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge . The final
day includes the type locality for the Lamoille Glaciation in
the Ruby Mountains, a well-preserved set of Lamoille and
Angel Lake-age end moraines, evidence of neotectonic activity,
and a drive through spectacular Lamoille Canyon .
6 . Timing, Distribution, Amount, Style, and Causes of
Cenozoic Extension, Northern Great Basin. 20–23 May;
US$325 per person .Christopher D . Henry, Nevada Bureau
of Mines and Geology; Joseph P . Colgan, USGS; Allen J .
McGrew, University of Dayton .
The trip examines the evidence for the timing of extension
and uplift, emphasizing three different aspects of the
regional geology: (1) the deeply exhumed metamorphic rocks
and structures of the East Humboldt Range and the evidence
for their P-T-t paths; (2) Eocene and Miocene volcanic and
sedimentary rocks that were deposited at the surface during
interpreted cooling and uplift of the Ruby Mountains–East
2011 GSA Rocky Mountain and Cordilleran Section Meeting 27

Humboldt Range; (3) Eocene and/or Miocene sedimentary
deposits that record the unroofing of the core complex . Fault
and tilt relationships between the rocks will be examined at
several locations, especially in a series of ash-flow tuff- and
sediment-filled paleovalleys that cross the extended region .
7. New Insights into the Outlet of Lake Bonneville,
Faults, and Deltas of the Bear River. 21 May; US$60 per
person . Susanne Janecke, Utah State University; Bob Oaks
Utah State University .
Southeast Idaho contains three outlets of pluvial Lake
Bonneville, and nested deltas built there by the Bear River .
We’ll review new evidence about the Bonneville highstand,
the Bonneville Flood, and its aftermath . Rupture along
the Riverdale fault zone possibly triggered the Bonneville
flood or induced a surface-breaking earthquake immediately
after the flood . Quaternary drainage divides shifted 20 km
south . Sills at these sites constrained the north-overflowing
Bonneville River and, thereby, two Provo shorelines . Deltas
of the Bear River at the Bonneville, Provo, and post-Provo
levels change from river-dominated to wave-dominated and
then back . Deep basinwide erosion of Bonneville deposits,
but negligible erosion of Provo deposits, indicate changing
Pleistocene climate .
8 . Paleontology and Stratigraphy of Middle Eocene
Rock units in the Bridger and Uinta Basins, Wyoming
and Utah. 21–22 May; US$195 per person . Beth Townsend,
Midwestern University; Paul Murphey, South Dakota Natural
History Museum; Anthony Friscia, University of California,
Los Angeles .
This field trip offers a comprehensive tour of the middle
Eocene Bridgerian, Uintan and Duchesnean North American
Land Mammal “Age” stratotype sequences . The volcaniclastic
Bridger Fm . was deposited on floodplains and in shallow lakes
in sub-tropical environments . The slightly younger Uinta
Fm . was deposited in a different depositional environments:
deltaic floodplains and high energy fluvial systems, preserving
very different fossils . In both basins, we are discussing the
geologic history, paleontology, and history of paleontological
work in these two classic fossil collecting areas worked during
the 19 th Century by paleontologists O .C . Marsh, E .D . Cope,
W .D . Matthew, O .A . Peterson, and others .
32 2011 GSA Abstracts with Programs
Giant Earthquakes of the Pacific Northwest
Dr. Tim Melbourne, Professor, Department of Geological Sciences and Director of the
Pacific Northwest Geodetic Array (PANGA), Central Washington University
The death toll for the recent earthquake in Japan, the best-prepared nation on earth, will
soon surpass the combined American deaths in 9/11 and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars . It’s a
sobering exercise to contemplate how the Pacific Northwest might have fared had the magnitude
9 .0 earthquake struck along the Cascadia fault beneath Washington and Oregon instead
of Japan . The Northwest’s vulnerability to seismic destruction matches Japan’s, but its readiness
does not . The Japan quake has shown that in its current state of preparations, the Northwest
risks unimaginable loss of life and destruction of military, transportation, communication and
economic infrastructure .
The Cascadia fault has for several decades been considered a sleeping giant, but new instrumentation
and new discoveries have shown it to be nearly continuously active over week-toweek
timescales . This activity is now being put to use to map out future fault slip that, in turn,
enables communities to better prepare for the inevitable . GPS technology in particular has
become a powerful tool in the arsenal of seismic hazards mitigation, both in the forecasting of
future earthquake location and sizes as well as in the rapid characterization of earthquakes once
they begin .
This talk will cover our current understanding of the mechanics and risk posed by the
Cascadia subduction fault . It will also discuss how new technologies are unveiling new phenomena
occurring within the fault itself and refining our ability to characterize what it holds in store
for Northwest communities .
After the ~45 minute public lecture, Dr . Melbourne will take questions from the audience .
