8.3. Individual Proposed Abstracts TITLE: System Modeling, Sampling, and Parameter Estimation OBJECTIVES: 1. To explore the theoretical development of systems models and submodels. 2. To continue work on development of a low-resolution system model for the Cedar River watershed or subsystems thereof. 3. To work toward low-resolution compartment models for biomass and water on the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest. 4. To model an aquatic system, continuing work on Fern Lake and also initiating work on Findley Lake within the Cedar River watershed. 5. To build a submodel of net assimilation in Douglas-fir. 6. To build a submodel for the soil nutrients of a Douglas-fir ecosystem. 7. To develop growth models of Douglas-fir at several levels of resolution. 8. To support model development of other research groups. 9. To supervise the sampling, experimental design, and data analysis for the Biome. APPROACHES: As has been stressed, the focus of the whole proposal is the construction of models of the ecosystem and all research is ultimately directed toward this goal. Each of the groups of scientists involved in a major component of the total system is responsible for the ultimate development of models. However, it is convenient to separate out specifically as "modeling" projects those that are not now concerned with data collection or field or laboratory research. It is also useful to identify the group who will take responsibility for the overall ecosystem model and who will work with and assist other groups who are building the component models. RESEARCH PLANS FOR YEAR 2: Two aspects of ecosystem modeling will be emphasized in year 2: (1) development of a computer simulation model of a forest ecosystem, and (2) investigaticn of theoretical aspects of ecosystem models. These are not independent, but the Washington group will have primary responsibility for the first and the Oregon group will have the primary responsibility for the second. The separate work of the several groups referred to above should lead in year 2 to a simulation model for the Thompson Experimental Forest in the Cedar River watershed, but with the view of early generalization to the Andrews Forest and other study sites. The form of the model will be hierarchical, and provision will be made for continual revision and replacement of submodels for abiotic, primary producer, decomposer, and consumer components, as well as for submodels entering each of these.
