THE TECHNOLOGY...W a v e f r o n t s c u l p t u r e t e c h n o l o g y ®6The first task of sound engineers and audio consultants is to design soundreinforcement systems for a predefined audience area. Performance expectationsin terms of clarity, coherence, sound pressure level (SPL) and coverageconsistency have progressively increased over the years while at the sametime the size of the audience has grown, inevitably leading to an increase inthe number of loudspeakers. In the past, conventional horn-loaded trapezoidal loudspeakers were typicallyassembled in fan-shaped arrays according to the nominal horizontal coverageangle of each enclosure in an attempt to reduce coverage overlap that causesdestructive interference. With this type of arrangement, the optimum clarityavailable in one direction could only be provided by the individual enclosurefacing in this direction. Attempts at «flattening the array» to achieve greaterthrow and higher SPLs resulted in severe interference in an uncontrolled way, affecting coverage, pattern control, intelligibility and overall sound quality.Even when arrayed according to specification (always an ‘’optimum’’ compromisesince the polar response of individual horns varies with frequency), thesound waves radiated by individual horn-loaded loudspeakers do not couplecoherently thus the conventional system approach is fundamentally flawed.Furthermore, the chaotic sound fields created by interfering sound sourceswaste acoustic energy, thus requiring more power than a single, coherentsource would in order to achieve the same SPL.As an illustration of this principle, imagine throwing some pebbles into a poolof water. If one pebble is thrown into the water, circular waves will expandconcentrically from the point where it entered. If a handful of pebbles arethrown into the water, we observe the equivalent of a chaotic wavefield. Ifwe throw in a single larger stone, having total size and weight equal to thehandful of pebbles, then we again see circular waves as for the case of thesingle pebble - only now with a much larger amplitude.A Single Sound Source From Many SpeakersThe initial specification for the Wavefront Sculpture Technology®(WST) research and development program was thedesign of a single acoustic source that is completely modularand adjustable while providing a totally coherent, predictablewavefield. In 1988, an early L-ACOUSTICS system called «Incremental»proved the project’s feasibility. Based on this experimentalconcept, Professor Marcel Urban and Dr. Christian Heilbegan theoretical research and presented their findings atthe 92nd AES Convention in Vienna in 1992 (Preprint #3269).The theory that was developed defines the acoustic couplingconditions for successfully arraying individual sound sources- including wavelength, the shape of each source, their surfaceareas and their relative separation.

V-DOSC ®wavefront sculpture technology®m a n u f a c t u r e r o f p r o f e s s i o n a l s o u n d s y s t e m s8applicationsL-ACOUSTICS® V-DOSC® is the first full frequency linesource array based on the principles of Wavefront SculptureTechnology® (WST). At the heart of V-DOSC is theinternationally patented DOSC waveguide which permitsfulfilment of WST criteria at high frequencies, allowingelements to couple coherently and create a single, continuous, isophasic sound source. As a result, V-DOSC isa full-spectrum coherent system, whereas conventionalhorn and driver assemblies interfere throughout mostof their operating bandwidth. By creating a continuousradiating ribbon, V-DOSC functions as a line source arrayin comparison with other line arrays that do not satisfyWST criteria at high frequencies.A turnkey V-DOSC system consists of V-DOSC elements, dedicated rigging, SB218 subwoofers, dV-DOSC fill enclosures, digital signal processors with proprietary OEMfactory presets, V-DOSC amplifier racks and associatedloudspeaker plus signal distribution cabling. A proprietaryreturn snake system including panels and multicoreis also available. The 90 degree horizontal coverage and coplanar symmetryof V-DOSC provides excellent stereo imaging inleft-right configurations while WST flexibility allows thedesigner to cover virtually any room geometry. Welldefinedvertical and horizontal directivity allows accurateperformance prediction with easy-to-use software toolsand by using calibrated angle values, a V-DOSC array isphysically configured as a variable curvature line sourcearray to match vertical directivity to the audience. Theend result is predictable coverage, exceptionally evenfrequency response and SPL along with the eliminationof comb filtering, phasing and lobing problems associatedwith conventional arrays. As a full range 3-way system, V-DOSC can be used in corporate, classical or theatrical productions without subwoofers. Fortouring applications, the addition of SB218 subwoofers is recommended and V-DOSC is highly suited for sound reinforcementin theatre, arena, stadium or outdoor festival applications.V-DOSC has revolutionized the loudspeaker industry by providing the sound engineer with an effective and versatile soundreinforcement tool. All elements of the V-DOSC system have been selected for their quality and durability and there is astrong emphasis placed on complementary technical support and training.specificationsL-ACOUSTICS specifications are based on measurement procedures which produce unbiased results and allow for realistic performanceprediction and simulations. Some of these specifications will appear very conservative when compared with other manufacturer’s specifications. All measurements are conducted under free field conditions and scaled to a 1 m reference distance unless otherwise indicated.Frequency ResponseFrequency responseUsable bandwidth50 - 18k Hz (±3 dB) (3WX HI preset)40 - 20k Hz (-10 dB)Sensitivity 1LF 100 dB SPL 40 - 200 HzMF 105 dB SPL 200 - 1.3kHzHF 108 dB SPL 1.3 - 18 kHzPower rating 2 Amplification Impedance(Long Term) (Recommended) (Nominal)LF 2 x 54 Vrms 2x 375 Wrms 2 x 1500 Wpeak 2x 750 W 2x 8 ΩMF 69 Vrms 600 Wrms 2400 Wpeak 1200 W 8 ΩHF 58 Vrms 200 Wrms 800 Wpeak 800 W 16 ΩNominal Directivity (-6dB) 3Horizontal symmetrical 90°Verticaldefined by the arraySystem Output 4 Continuous SPL Continuous SPL(flat array) (maximum curvature array)One enclosure 134 dB 134 dBTwo enclosures 140 dB 139 dB 5° vertical coverageFour enclosures 146 dB 143 dB 15° vertical coverageEnclosure• Width1300 mm 51.2 in• Height 434 mm 17.1 in• Depth 565 mm 22.2 in• Weight (net) 108 kg 238.1 lbs• Shipping weight 122 kg 269 lbs• Shipping dims 1340 x 480 x 600 mm• Connectors :52.8 x 18.9 x 23.6 in2x 8-pin CA-COM• Material : 15 mm, 30 mm Baltic birchplywood• Finish : Maroon-gray• Grill : Black epoxy perforated steel withacoustically-transparent foam• Rigging : Integrated flying hardware andhandlesAdditional Equipment• OEM factory presets for approved digitalprocessors• L-ACOUSTICS SB218 subwoofer• L-ACOUSTICS LA48a power amplifierActive 3 way enclosure(2 x 15’’ LF, 4 x 7’’ MF, 2 x 1.4’’ HF)WST based line source designPerfect coupling, predictable coverageAdjustable vertical directivity (up to 5°)Designed for high performance touringand fixed installationExcellent for medium and long throw applicationsThe unique attenuation properties of V-DOSC (3 dBreduction in SPL with doubling of distance) are obtainedthrough cylindrical wave generation plus proper focus ofthe system. dV-DOSCwavefront sculpture technology®m a n u f a c t u r e r o f p r o f e s s i o n a l s o u n d s y s t e m sapplicationsL-ACOUSTICS® dV-DOSC provides the same performancebenefits as V-DOSC® and ARCS® in an extremelycompact format suitable for both fixed installation andtouring applications. The 120° horizontal coverage ofdV-DOSC combined with the power of Wavefront SculptureTechnology® in adapting vertical system directivityto match the audience area results in well-defined, predictablecoverage combined with exceptionally evenfrequency response and SPL.specifications12As a full-range, 2-way system, dV-DOSC can be used forspeech reinforcement in corporate applications or as avoice-only system for television and theatrical productions. The compact profile of dV-DOSC is ideal for installationswhere visually unobtrusive sound design is animportant issue.dV-DOSC is also well-suited to large-scale fixed installationssuch as single or multiple distributed arrays forstadium and arena sound reinforcement. For theseapplications, the generous 120° horizontal pattern combinedwith the seamless transition between short- tolong-throw zones obtained using Wavefront Sculptureprinciples allows the sound designer to achieve excellentintelligibility and cost-effective coverage even under difficult, highly reverberant acoustic conditions. When combined with subwoofers for extended bandwidthapplications, dV-DOSC can be used as a frontofhousesystem for small, medium and large venues. Forthese applications, the 120° horizontal coverage patternprovides excellent stereo imaging in the standard leftrightformat while the flexibility provided by WavefrontSculpture allows the sound designer to cover virtuallyany room geometry. For touring applications, dV-DOSC can be used as adownfill enclosure for flying underneath V-DOSC arraysor as a long-throw extension of the system when stackedon top of the V-DOSC flying bumper. Other applicationsinclude flown dV-DOSC arrays for center cluster or offstagefill and stacked configurations for front fill or stereoinfill. When operated in conjunction with subwoofers,dV-DOSC can also be used for stage monitoring applications.Given all these possibilities, that’s why the ”dV” indV-DOSC stands for ”Definitely Versatile”.L-ACOUSTICS specifications are based on measurement procedures which produce unbiased results and allow for realistic performance predictionand simulations. By satisfyingWavefront Sculpture Technology® (WST) criteria, ARCS providesremarkable clarity and perfect coherence along withpowerful, smooth, predictable coverage.ARCS is designed for tightly-wrapped arraying in single ordouble row configurations or for horizontal arraying of up to4 enclosures. The internationally patented DOSC waveguidedesigned exclusively for ARCS radiates a wavefront that has aradius of curvature matching the enclosure’s 22.5° trapezoidalangle. When arrayed, the radiated constant curvaturewavefront is continuous with an arc’s shape with horizontaldirectivity equal to N x 22.5° (where N is the number of ARCS).Vertically, the exit of the DOSC waveguide is loaded by acylindrical waveguide that provides an asymmetrical coverageangle of +40° by -20°. Modular horizontal coverage, combinedwith 60° vertical directivity, makes ARCS highly suitedto the overall coverage and throw distance requirements fortypical medium-sized venues. As a full range, 2-way system ARCS can be used for front-ofhouse(FOH) sound reinforcement in corporate, television ortheatrical applications. Due to its optimum speech reproductionand small physical footprint, ARCS is also highly effectiveas a flown center cluster for theatrical installations. For largescalefixed installation, distributed arrays can be employedfor stadium and arena sound reinforcement. in these applications,ARCS can be installed either single or arrayed, verticallyor horizontally, and the precise, modular 22.5° horizontaldirectivity combined with the generous 60° vertical coverageallows for cost-effective coverage. For touring applications, as a complementary 2-way fillenclosure ARCS is ideal for sidefill monitoring due to its tight,well-defined directivity pattern. When used in conjunctionwith V-DOSC or dV-DOSC FOH systems, ARCS is highly suitablefor flown or stacked centre fill, stereo front fill, offstagefill or delay system applications. When combined with L-ACOUSTICS SB218 or dV-SUB subwoofers,ARCS delivers powerful, extended bandwidthreproduction with additional low frequency impact that isperfect for FOH use in medium-sized venues. For FOH applications, the modular horizontal directivity of ARCS allows forexcellent stereo imaging in the standard left-right formatwhile the flexibility provided by asymmetrical vertical coverageallows the sound designer to cover virtually any room geometry. For more demanding FOH applications, ARCS can be used in a double row configuration with top row cabinets oriented in the normalposition for up-fill and bottom row cabinets inverted for down-fill. When arrayed in this manner, all 15’’ loudspeakers satisfy WSTcriteria and couple over their entire operating bandwidth, providing maximum low frequency impact and throw due to enhanceddirectivity control at lower frequencies.ARCS - an ”Arrayable Radial Coherent System”.specificationsL-ACOUSTICS specifications are based on measurement procedures which produce unbiased results and allow for realistic performance predictionand simulation. Withpower handling capacity of 1200 Wrms and response to35 Hz, dV-SUB is ideal for applications requiring maximumlow end impact from an extremely compact enclosure.38Important design criteria in the development of dV-SUBwere maximum SPL output combined with low frequencyextension from an enclosure as compact as possible.Dualchamber vented bandpass loading providedthe answer. High power handling components also contributeto the SPL performance and since 15’’ transducersare operated in parallel this presents an optimum 2.7 Ωload to the power amplifier.Rigging flexibility was another key consideration anddV-SUB’s integral rigging system allows for the installationof a single flown column of dV-DOSC and dV-SUBenclosures (with dV-SUB flown at the top of the array anddV-DOSC underneath).Although deeper than dV-DOSC, dV-SUB has the samewidth and in keeping with the recommended ratio of3 dV-DOSC: 1 dV-SUB, enclosure height is equivalent toapproximately 3 dV-DOSC. This allows for the creationof physically compact arrays when dV-SUB is flown oneither side of dV-DOSC in a coplanar symmetric arrangement.Either single column or coplanar symmetric flownconfigurations can be used in FOH applications forsmall, medium or large venues and also in large-scalefixed installations such as multiple distributed arrays forstadium or arena sound reinforcement. For theatricalapplications, where visually unobtrusive sound designis critical, dV-DOSC plus dV-SUB is ideal for stereo infill(floor), main left/right (balcony) or center cluster use.The 695 mm (27.4’’) cubic dimensions of dV-SUB arehighly convenient for ground-stacked applicationswhere dV-SUB serves as a stacking platform for dV-DOSC.This combination is also ideal for stage monitoring applicationssuch as sidefill or drum fill. The LA4 and LA8 onboard DSPpreset libraries allow the Sound Engineer a high degreeof flexibility. The factory preset library is derived from 6 basic systemtemplates.44The L-ACOUSTICS loudspeaker preset library is managedbetween the two LA4 and LA8 platforms and the presetallocation for both determined by model, configuration, and application choice. For example, the LA4 factory preset library coversL-ACOUSTICS loudspeaker systems that require up to 800Watts into 8 ohm load or 1000 Watts into 4 ohms in twinparallel transducer configurations. The LA8 factory presetlibrary covers L-ACOUSTICS loudspeaker systems withpower requirements typically up to 1100 Watts into 8ohms or 1800 Watts into 4 ohms in twin parallel transducerconfigurations.

l-net remotecontrol networkThe proprietary L-NET network utilises a high speed data transferof 100 Mbit/sec for real time monitoring and controls each individualLA controller preset in a network of up to 253 units. Multiplenetwork topologies such as daisy-chaining, star, and hybrid, arequickly and easily configurable allowing for total flexibility inachieving the required system architecture. The physical connectionbetween the mainframe PC and the controllers is managedwith CAT5e STP cables and the I/O Ethernet sockets located onthe rear panel of the controller require industry standard RJ45connectors. The use of a universal Ethernet switcher is recommendedfor specific network topologies.digitalaudio networkBoth the LA4 and LA8 are provided with a slot located on the rearpanel designed to accept an optional L-DGA network digital audiocard. The slot allows for the provision of an additional digital inputmodule consisting of a 64 audio channel bus plus one extra channeldedicated to control and monitoring. The extremely low andpredictable latency of this technology combined with proven realworld reliability delivers stable and predictable results in all soundreinforcement applications. The L-DGA card also allows for cascadingof several LA4 and LA8 using the same type of cable as for theL-NET remote control network. The signal routing on the digitalla network managerpc softwareThe application provides network control and monitoring of bothLA4 and LA8 controllers from a PC Windows ® -operating system. The multiple window display gives an overall visualization of thenetwork status, number and groups of controllers, and all theinformation related to the control and monitoring of the networkedunits.Real-time control for parameters such as gain, mute, delay, polarity, presets, either on individual units or at network level are managedon a “tree layout” screen interface with standard drop down menusand multiple visualisations of all user parameters. An exclusivecontour EQ optimization tool is also available allowing quick andeasy tonal balancing of the loudspeaker system.LA NETWORK MANAGER provides system stand-by and initializationcontrol in addition to comprehensive visual monitoring of45

LA48a2 - c h a n n e l p o w e r a m p l i f i e rm a n u f a c t u r e r o f p r o f e s s i o n a l s o u n d s y s t e m sFEATURESThe LA48a is a compact, light-weight power amplifier (2rack units high, 10 kg) designed for high performancetouring and fixed installation. Primarily intended forpowering V-DOSC and SB218 subwoofers, the LA48a iscapable of providing up to 2900 W per channel into 2 Ω.The LA48a can also be configured to match the powerdelivered to a wide range of impedance loads using MinimumLoad Select (MLS) switches, allowing the amplifierto be customized to suit a variety of L-ACOUSTICS loudspeakermodels and applications.transistors are cooled by a patented heatsink systemtermed the Intercooler®. Bipolar output devices aredirectly mounted onto a copper heat sink for improvedheat transfer. The heat sink is then mounted horizontallyin front of a pressure chamber that is created by2 variable speed cooling fans. Specially designed thermalfeedback circuitry protects against thermal breakdownand advanced linear active filtering is employedto reduce carrier noise and distortion in accordancewith the strictest of EMC and RFI standards.46The switch-mode power supply (SMPS) employed inthe LA48a is a modern solution to the weight and sizeproblem. With SMPS technology, it is possible to useferrite transformers instead of the heavy iron transformersand large electrolytic capacitors that are typical ofconventional power amplifiers. Combined with theheat dissipation efficiency of the patented Intercooler®system, this results in a weight reduction of up to 60%when compared with conventional amplifiers of similarpower ratings.Earlier attempts at using SMPS technology for audiowere less than impressive since they directly adoptedthe type of supply found in computers. The LA48a is differentsince a regulated SMPS has been implementedusing push pull conversion without current limitingon the secondary side of the switching transformer.Instead, sense windings inject a magnetic pulse from theAC line during a pulse time segment which is separatefrom the output charge current pulse. The net result is apower supply with performance characteristics that arethe same as a conventional power supply and capableof delivering high peak power, tight bass and detailedtransient response.Using SMPS technology it is also easy to stabilize the DCrailvoltage allowing the LA48a to deliver full power overa range of up to 20% supply voltage swings and at anyAC mains frequency from DC to 400 Hz. This stabilizationis obtained by controlling the magnetic energy inthe ferrite transformer with pulse width processing andmagnetic flux sense windings. The LA48a has an upgraded version of the switchedmode output stage from the LA 24a where the powerThe LA48a is completely short-circuit protected (evenfor reactive loads) and specially designed short-circuitprotection circuitry allows very high peak currentswhile holding transistors within their ”Safe OperatingArea”. This makes it possible to run loudspeakers withimpedance variations that are considerably lower thanthe rated impedance of the power amplifier. 6 moreprotection circuits protect the LA48a and the loudspeakers:DC Protection: 2 types of D.C. protection - fuses on thesupply branches of each channel (IEC 65 requirement)and crowbar type protection that shorts the output.Thermal Protection: Protects the amplifier from overheatingand causing damage to the output stages.Clip Limiter: Prevents severely clipped waveformsfrom reaching the loudspeakers while maintaining fullpeak power.VHF (Very High Frequency) Protection: Protectsthe loudspeaker against non-musical signals outsidethe audible frequency range.AC Protection: Shuts down the outputs if the line voltageis outside the operating voltage of the LA48a.AFS Limiter (Adaptive Fuse Saver): Limits the mainscurrent to a safe level according to the time lag of an 16ampere slow blow fuse. All electronics are mounted on 4 modules that are easilyaccessible for repair or replacement.2 x 1300 W into 8 Ω2 x 2300 W into 4 Ω2 x 2900 W into 2 ΩCompact design, 2 U high (88 mm)Lightweight (10 kg, 22 lbs)MLS switches offer power matchinginto different loadsElectronically balanced inputsLED indicators show outputvoltage and headroomOutput cooledby patented Intercooler®2 proportional speed fansIndependent protection circuitryShort circuit protectionDC protectionClip limitingVHF protectionAFS limiterThermal protectionAC protection
