CPT Guide - 2006Cone Penetration Test (CPT)Stiffness and ModulusCPT data can be used to estimate modulus for subsequent use in elastic orsemi-empirical settlement prediction methods. However, correlationsbetween q c and moduli (E) are sensitive to stress and strain history, agingand sand mineralogy.A useful guide for estimating Young's moduli for uncementedpredominantly silica sands is given in Figure 20. The modulus has beendefined as that mobilized at 0.1% strain. For more heavily loadedconditions (i.e. larger strain) the modulus would decrease. The results forNC sands are applicable for young recent fills with an age less than 10years and the results for Aged NC sands are applicable for natural sandswith an age greater than 1000 years.Figure 20 Evaluation of drained Young's modulus from CPTfor silica sands35
