(Eimer 460; MI.400.257),in plastic holder, graded by NGC as AU58, toned, about extremely fine £175-200885 Lifesaving, a French gold lifesaving medal awarded to an <strong>of</strong>ficer in the Royal Navy, 1830, byRaymond Gayrard, bare head <strong>of</strong> Charles X l., rev. 10 line inscription engraved within wreath,MINISTÈRE DE LA MARINE – HORATIO JAMES LIEUTENANT DE LA MARINE ROYALANGLAISE – POUR AVOIR SAUVÉ DES MARINS FRANÇAIS NAUFRAGÈS, 41mm, total wt.58.96 gms, contained in a loose gold mount with suspension ring, very fine £1200-1500A rare award to a British recipient.Horatio James (1789-1850), entered the Royal Navy in 1804, rising to the rank <strong>of</strong> Commander after a full, activeand interesting service career. At the time <strong>of</strong> this award he was Supernumerary-Lieutenant on H.M.S. Hyperion,on Coast Blockade (the Coast Blockade was disbanded in 1831 and its work taken over by the Coast Guard). In1833 he married Sarah Margaretta Symonds (1802-1889), and they had two daughters, Harriet Frances (1836-1868) and Maria (1843-1914). His papers are in the National Library <strong>of</strong> Wales (Penralley Papers).The award must be one <strong>of</strong> the last made before Charles X was overthrown in the French Revolution <strong>of</strong> 1830,known as the July Revolution.
