BC WINE TRENDSThe BC Wine Institute reports that despite many challenges and a 11%drop in tonnage, the 2010 wine grape crop offers outstanding quality. The majority of BC wineries started picking after September 24, andwith fruit still coming in well into November, it was one of the latestharvests on record. Although the grape pricing rose slightly over 2009,that increase has not affected wine prices for consumers.Variety 2010 Rank 2010 Total Tons* 2009 Rank 2009 Total Tons*Merlot 1 3,030.69 1 3,391.15Chardonnay 2 1,891.04 2 2,398.22Pinot Gris 3 1,622.26 3 1,793.60Cabernet Sauvignon 4 1,602.51 4 1,695.05Pinot Noir 5 1,344.99 5 1,445.65Sauvignon Blanc 6 1,064.56 7 1,168.42Syrah/Shiraz 7 936.43 11 739.73Gewürztraminer 8 845.47 6 1,310.45Pinot Blanc 9 808.74 10 868.65Riesling 10 786.16 9 880.26*Tonnage reported in short tons.Note: Participation in this survey is voluntary; therefore the tonnages reported here may differ from actual industry tonnages. The 2010 BC Wine Grape Crop Report was compiled by BDO Canada LLP from information submitted by 126wineries across the province, with assistance from the BC Wine Institute, BC Grapegrowers Association, BC WineAuthority and the BC Wine Grape Council. The Publican regretsany inconvenience that may have been caused. The rules for tasting events in LRS establishments are setout in the LRS Terms and Conditions Guide. An up-to-datecopy is available on the Liquor Control and Licensing Branchwebsite www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/lclb/resources/index.htm,under “Licensee Guides”:A LRS may offer opportunities in their store for customersto taste products. However, a LRS may not take liquoroff-site for any reason (except to deliver to customers whohave purchased liquor from the store). This means that theLRS cannot hold a tasting event away from its store. Themaximum quantities per patron at a tasting event are alsoset out in the Guide. Although tastes must be provided tocustomers at no charge, a LRS may charge a fee for a foodpairing demonstration. If the LRS chooses to put on its own tasting event, the liquorused must come from its own stock, and the LRS mustprovide staff for the event. Alternatively, a LRS can agreewith an agent to put on a tasting hosted by the agent. Whenthe agent is hosting, he must buy all the liquor for the eventfrom the LRS at regular retail prices. He can put up signs andsales promotion material. The agent does not have to be inattendance for the whole event - either the agent or LRS staffcan pour the tastes for customers. At the end of the tasting event, all opened bottles and leftoversamples must be destroyed. The liquor cannot be taken out ofthe LRS. The branch has recently decided that leftover winein automatic dispensers, such as an Enomatic, may be keptfor another tasting at the same LRS.The LRS or the agent may contract with a company tolook after advertising, promotion materials, surveys, etc.associated with a tasting.AdvertisersA.B.
