A M E S S A G E F R O Mour superintendentWhile Marian Central Catholic HighSchool has and will continue tomaintain its core Catholic identifyand purpose, the school throughoutits history has continued to evolveand grow to meet new challenges. In order to accomplish this in anorderly and organized manner, school leadership has periodicallyengaged in the process of strategiclong range planning. The latest ofthese plans was developed in 2004 and involved seeking input fromthe school’s various constituencies in the development of the Marian2010 Strategic Plan. Since 2005 the school has been implementingthe fourteen recommendations that were contained in that plan. The last of the recommendations to be implemented will be the chapeland science wing addition onto the school. In 2008, we kicked ourGolden Anniversary Campaign: Celebrating our Past; Securing ourFuture. As a result of the success of the campaign, in combinationwith a loan from the Diocese, we anticipate moving forward with theconstruction of this building addition in the very near future. Alumniwill recall that our last major addition onto the school occurred in themid 1990’s and included ten classrooms, an auditorium, and a gymnasium. That project was funded through a combination of a capitalcampaign and a loan from the Diocese as well. Those 15-year mortgagepayments began in the 1999-2000 school year. We are pleasedto inform you that loan was paid off in eleven years (last payment:June, 2009) leaving the school currently debt free. We have alwaysstrived to be good stewards of the monies given to us in tuition and feesby parents as well as those dollars we have received from ourmany constituents as donations to various causes including ourcapital campaigns. We look forward to securing our future with the new building addition. The new chapel will be located on the ground floor adjacent to a newentrance and will be a centerpiece in providing for the spiritual andreligious growth of our students. The eight combination scienceclassrooms/laboratories will be state of the art facilities that will replacethe three laboratories that have been utilized by Marian students sincethe school was built in 1959. One of the existing laboratories will beremodeled into an expanded Guidance and Counseling Center whichwill greatly enhance our abilities to meet our college preparatory goalsas well as personal counseling needs. Also by vacating and remodelingthe existing laboratories, the school will be able to potentiallyincrease its enrollment capacity as McHenry County continues to growin the future.Marian Central Catholic High School has throughout its history been adynamic Catholic institution that has provided thousands of teenagersthe opportunity to grow and develop in all phases of their lives. Our future is every bit as bright as we continue to help young peopleunderstand and live out God’s salvation message.MARIAN CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOLachievementsFrom academic accolades to serviceofferings, the accomplishments of ourstudents are a source of pride to the entireMarian community.• There were 168 graduates in the Classof 2009.• Total value of scholarships earned:over $8 million.• 46 students were members of theNational Honor Society.• 24 students were inducted into theSpanish National Honor Society.• 17 students were inducted into theTri-M Music Honor Society.• The ACT composite score for themembers of the Class of 2009 was 24.1.• There was one perfect ACT score of36 by Fiona Weeks.• 41 graduates were named IllinoisState Scholars.• 56 graduates were named MarianSenior Scholars.• 7 graduates were recognized asNational Merit Commended Scholars:Molly Conlon, Michael Forti, MeghanKeane, Austin May, Claire Mueller andChristopher Postelniak.• Elizabeth Tomkins was recognizedas National Merit Finalist.• The Boys soccer team won theregional and sectional titles.• Tori Stock, a state finalist, was namedNorthwest Herald Girls Golfer of the Year.• The Boys golf team won the regionaltitle and Stefan Johnson, GordieMitchard and Luke Waggoner werestate finalists.• Jim Speaker was named The NorthwestHerald’s Golf Coach of the Year.• The National Honor Society Food Drivein April donated 6,500 canned fooditems to two food pantries.• Girls volleyball won regional andsectional titles.• Deb Rakers was named The NorthwestHerald’s Girls Volleyball Coach ofthe Year.• Boys varsity track team sent sixmembers to the IHSA State Track meet.2 2008-2009 ANNUAL REPORT
