DEFINITION OFSWIM CLASSESBASIC SWIM CLASSES - All poolsPARENT & CHILD ($45/50) Ages: 6 months-4 yearsParents and children participate in guided practice sessions with the emphasis onfun, comfort and swimming readiness. This course does not teach children to beaccomplished swimmers nor to survive in the water. One adult, 18 years of age orolder, must accompany the child in the water.STARFISH ($45/50) Ages: 3-5 yearsIntroduces swimming and water safety to children with little or no previous swimmingexperience who are comfortable in the water without parental assistance or floatationdevices. This class is for new swimmers younger than six years of age.TADPOLE ($45/50) Ages: 4-5 yearsFor children younger than six years of age who can float independently on frontand back with minimal support, and swim 9 feet unassisted.SEA TURTLE ($45/50) Ages: 4-5 yearsFor children younger than six years of age who have passed Tadpole. Child canstart from the wall and swim 15 feet of front crawl, and do an independentback glide.GUPPY (Introduction to Water Safety) ($45/50) Ages: 6 years and up(Not younger than six)Designed for children with limited swimming experience. Helps children buildconfidence, swim on front and back short distances by themselves, and developsafety skills in and around the water.SEAL (Fundamental Aquatic Skills) ($45/50) For children who have passed theGuppy or Sea Turtle levelThis class is for children who can swim more than 15 feet by themselves. Newskills include learning a combined stroke on front and back, tread water, and watersafety skills.DOLPHIN (Stroke Development) ($45/50) For children who have passed theSeal levelDesigned for children who can swim both the front and back strokes at least 30feet, jump into deep water, and tread water. New skills include the developmentof coordinated strokes, diving, and more safety skills.ADVANCED SWIM CLASSES - High School pool onlyBARRACUDA (Stroke Improvement) ($50)Children must have passed Dolphin level at the High School poolThis class is for children that are comfortable swimming in deep water for at least15 yards using both the front with side breathing and the back crawl. New skillsinclude underwater swimming, improved distance and confidence in the front andback strokes, new strokes, throwing assists and other water safety skills.SHARK (Stroke Refinement) ($50)For children who have passed the Barracuda levelChildren must be able to swim 25 yards of both front and back crawl, 15 yards ofelementary backstroke and breaststroke, and tread water for one minute. This classprovides further coordination and refinement of strokes along with new skills suchas sidestroke, surface dives, flip turns, survival swimming, and rescue breathing.ORCA (<strong>Swim</strong>ming and Skill Proficiency) ($50)For children who have passed the Shark levelDesigned for children who are able to swim 50 yards of both front and back crawl, 25yards of elementary backstroke and breaststroke, and tread water for two minutes.Students will work on refining swim technique, stroke production, conditioningand endurance, safety and survival skills, and basic diving techniques.ADULT <strong>Swim</strong> Lessons ($50) Ages: 16 years and olderFor the adult and young adult who wish to learn the fundamentals or improvetheir basic skills.SQUAD <strong>Swim</strong> Team ($30) Ages: 6-16 yearsChild must be able to swim 25 yards in at least one competitive stroke, such asfreestyle or backstroke. Students will work on swim team related techniques, andhave the opportunity to compete in swim meets.WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR AIDE ($40) Ages:12-15 yearsChild must have passed the Barracuda levelDesigned for those who want to assist a Water Safety Instructor with swim lessons.Students will work on instructional responsibilities, emergency plans, and nonswimmingrescues. The class is 80 minutes long.BASIC WATER RESCUE ($40) Child must have passed the Barracuda levelProvides individuals with the information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize,and respond to aquatic emergencies. Small Craft Safety will also be discussed.GUARDSTART: Lifeguarding Tomorrow ($40) Ages: 11-14 yearsChild must have passed the Barracuda levelProvides a foundation of lifeguarding skills for youth with good swimming skillswho plan to be lifeguards.WATER POLO ($60/$40) Ages: 9 to 14 yearsChild should have passed the Barracuda levelLearn about and improve the fundamental techniques, tactics and team concepts.Must be able to tread water and swim proficiently in deep water, and havecompleted a Barracuda level swimming class or pass a swimming test. Class is 80minutes long.POOL RENTALSThe three City-owned pools, Gary Hall, Magnolia and Woodbury, are available forrent. These pools will be available to groups and organizations on a reservationbasis during the hours they are not open to the public. SWIM PROGRAMThe 2013 <strong>Summer</strong> Aquatics <strong>Program</strong> (June, July, and August) includesAmerican Red Cross swimming lessons and recreational swimmingat four pool locations throughout the city. The swimming lessonswill emphasize the development of swimming skills to promotepersonal safety, health and exercise, as well as social interaction.Pools will open Monday, June 24, 2013 for swim lessons and recreationalswimming. <strong>Swim</strong> passes, pool rentals, and other swimming opportunitiesare also available. To schedule a pool rental or for more information aboutthe summer program, call 741-5200.Registration will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis as classcapacity allows. Fees are payable at the time of registration by cash, check,or credit card. Checks are made payable to the City of <strong>Garden</strong> <strong>Grove</strong>.Request for a refund must be made one week prior to the start of the class.There will be a $5.00 processing fee for each class refund.SWIM LESSONS:<strong>Swim</strong> classes are held Monday through Thursday, 40 minutes each dayfor two (2) weeks. All swim classes consist of eight (8) lessons. The fee foreach session is $45.00/$50.00 per student. Private lessons will be offeredat times not being used for group lessons. The fee for a series of four (4),40-minute private lessons is $80.00/$85.00.
