GMS Shooting for the Stars
By GMS Principal Pat Autry
Two new stars are out this year at GMS.
Our student recognition program, formerly Renaissance, was renamed this year as the Star
Student program. This program recognizes students in grades 5 – 8 who make excellent grades
and who are exemplary when it comes to following the rules. Each grading period, students
who qualify receive certificates for free snacks and dress code days. In addition, students who
qualify four of possible five grading periods, will earn a free field trip to Hawaiian Falls in May.
We feel this is a great way to recognize the STARS of GMS!
The 2nd new star is the STAAR test which replaces the TAKS test this year. This new test, the
State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, is designed to measure how ready a student
is to proceed to and be successful in the next grade/course. STAAR will be similar to TAKS in
that it is still given in the same grades/courses as TAKS was. However, it will be different in
several ways as well.
The main difference is that the test is now timed. Students will have four hours to complete the test. Four hours
sounds like a long time. But students who have always been told to take their time and “you can take all day,” are feeling
rushed already by the time limit. The truth is that the vast majority of our students have been finished with all or almost
all of their tests within two to three hours or so – even when taking their time. If this subject comes up at your house,
please encourage your son or daughter to keep doing what they’ve always done – don’t panic, don’t rush. Four hours will
be plenty of time.
Another difference is that the STAAR will require higher-level thinking, which means the students must perform more
steps before reaching an answer.
Lastly, some accommodations to meet students’ needs have been changed from TAKS, and will be implemented as
requested.
Rest assured that your students are in good hands and these tests, like always, will show what great kids – what shining
stars – we have here at GMS!
The one thing we ask is that you help them be successful by ensuring they eat and sleep well the night before the test
and arrive at school rested and ready to go!
We will be testing at GMS on March 27th and 28th and again on April 24th – 27th Mr. Pat Autry
.
As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
The STAAR will be more rigorous
than previous state tests. It will contain
more test questions at most grade
levels.
The majority of new STAAR
assessments will test material students
studied that year. Also, for the first time
since the state began its standardized
testing program, the tests will have a
time limit. Unless a student is eligible
for an accommodation, each student will have four hours to complete each
assessment.
The new rigorous program will focus on readiness for success in subsequent
grades and courses and, ultimately, for college and career. For more
information regarding STAAR, please visit the TEA website:
The GHS Theater Department is preparing their
UIL One-Act Play, Good-bye To The Clown, by
Ernest Kinoy, for Zone competition on March 21 at
Grayson County College.
The play is about a young girl who has suffered
a tragic loss and has turned to an imaginative
coping technique in the form of a Clown. The
Clown is very funny and precocious, but poor
Peggy gets blamed for all his mischievous deeds
landing her in trouble with the principal and her
mother. Peggy’s mother is beside herself trying to
cope with both her loss and her daughter’s
strange behavior.
The plot thickens when Peggy overhears her
mother and uncle discussing the situation and she
slowly begins to realize the truth. Once this
happens, the Clown must go away never to return.
The cast of the play includes Ashleigh Gehman
as Peggy, Houston Pokorny as the Clown, Alex
Lashley as Peggy’s mother, Hayden Perry as
Uncle George, Ethan Crutchfield as Dr. Benson,
and Michelle Cole as Miss Erwin.
Crew members are Alec Gonzalez, Kayle
Koberowski, Jamie Boelens, and Emily Harless.
Jarrod Reed is the understudy for the male roles.
The play is being directed by Mrs. Elizabeth
Kulbeth and Mrs. Leslie Hindman.
Watch for details regarding a performance for
the community prior to competition.
GHS contributes to anti-bullying video
Gunter High School was selected to be the setting
for an anti-bullying video campaign in November. The
school's front entry area and cafeteria attracted the
producers due to the unique and inviting design; plus,
the fact the high school has lockers (most high
schools do not).
Cynthia Foster, GHS technology teacher, was
asked to select up to twenty students to be
background students and walk the hallways and sit in
the cafeteria or classroom. These kids gave up two
long days of their Christmas break to make the video.
For those two days, GHS had fifty plus people
working on the video. The filming crew was from
Baylor University and the director was from Dallas.
The students were told the days would be long and
there would be much down time between takes. So,
to help pass down time the students played games
on an XBOX or played guitars and sang songs in the
hallway. When filming, the students discovered they
were once again waiting while the director set up the
lighting and worked on camera angles.
The production was a positive endeavor for
everyone.
"I liked the experience I received and the great
people I met," Houston Pokorny said.
Other students learned some valuable lessons
from the shoot and all agreed they would do it again.
"It opened up a window of opportunity for me,"
Austin Teat said.
“This is what I want to do for a living - making
films and videos,” Taylor Foster added. “So more
opportunities will now be coming from this."
Perhaps the hardest thing for these students was
they were not allowed to talk about their experiences
until the video was officially released, which was
Sunday, January 29. They did not tell other students
what they were doing, or say anything about the
video.
They were invited to the release party in Fairview
where they saw the official video, received some
gifts, and made more connections. This was an
experience they will carry with them forever.
4th Grade
Ryan Lounsbury
Students in Ms. Kerri’s Life Skills Class were chefs for
the day and prepared homemade heart-shaped pizzas, red
rice krispie treats, sugar cookies to celebrate Valentine’s
Day. They also traded Valentines and were very blessed
by Mrs. Driskill’s class which gave each student a bag of
goodies.

Amazing Macaw
As part of their study of South
America, Mrs. Racanelli’s sixth graders
enjoyed a visit from Chile, a green
winged Macaw.
The species is widespread in the forests
and woodlands of northern and central
South America. However, as with other
macaws, in recent years there has been a
marked decline in its numbers due to
habitat loss and illegal capture for the
parrot trade.
Chile is owned by Chad and Cariana
Harker, parents of GMS students Hannah
and Joshua Potapov.
