Mr. Autry
Technology Advances
By GMS Principal Pat Autry
It’s hard to live in the world today and not notice how quickly technology is advancing. You’ve
probably seen the commercial about the “new” television set that is outdated before it’s delivered!
Whether dealing with “normal” budgets or the budget cuts of this summer, it has been hard for
school districts to keep up.
But we had a few exciting things happen this summer at GMS that have us MORE than just
keeping up!
First, wireless internet was added to our building. This is a huge step and makes other
improvements easier. I’d like to offer a big thank you to Mr. Worthy for supporting our request
for wireless and to Shelli Neely, Zach Allen, and Marilyn Davis for making it happen.
Second, you’ve probably heard about our new policy regarding students bringing and using
their own technology devices. This is an exciting new development at Gunter Middle School. It’s
exciting for me to visit classes where students are in groups working on phones or tablets they’ve
brought from home. Again, the wireless internet had to happen before this was possible.
Third, we were fortunate to receive two new COWs, or Computers on Wheels. These portable laptops are reserved by
teachers for student use in the classroom. You should see the calendar! They are used every day – some days by more
than one class.
So when you talk to your student about school, I hope you hear that technology is a part of their day at GMS. More and
more, it’s a part of everyone’s day in both their job and personal life. We think school should look like life and are excited
to have these advances in technology available for our teachers and students.
Here’s one last thought on the subject: Parents, please be sure you are involved in your child’s use of technology.
Monitor their internet use, limit their game play and texting. Know where their computers and cell phones are after
9 pm. Just sayin’!
Thanks for partnering with us to educate the great students we have at GMS. Thanks for volunteering your time and
talents. If we can help you in any way, please let us know!
GISD app is here!
The Gunter ISD app is available in the iTunes store and
the Android Market. It is a free app that will provide information
right to you in an instant. If you have not downloaded it
yet, be sure to get it.
There is one very important thing you should know about
the app. Many of the pages you see are actually pages from
our website. Your phone will "remember" how a page looked
when it loaded, and to load it faster, it will load that image of
the page. If you want your app to give you the most "up to
date" information, you will need to make sure it is a fresh
load.
If you see the blue GT at the beginning of the loading
process, you will have the most up to date info. If you do not
see the blue GT, you are probably loading a cached image.
In order to refresh the app, you must stop the app and
restart it.
On iPhones, you double click the home button and press
and hold the GT app at the bottom. When you see the red
minus button on the apps across the bottom of your screen,
press the minus sign to close the app. Press your home
button again, and then start the app like you normally do.

Mix it up - Make new friends
Gunter Middle School was one of the more than 2,100 schools
participating nationally in “Mix It Up-At Lunch Day” on
October 18.
Mix It Up-At Lunch Day is a national campaign launched by
Teaching Tolerance that encourages students to identify,
question and cross social boundaries.
“...The simple space of a cafeteria table is, for many, a
comfort zone where we can be ourselves with those who know
us best. Touch base. Regroup. Let down the guard that classroom
pressures often require of us. For others, the lunch room,
with all its boundaries, is a world with its own pressures, a
world of familiar strangers and rigid expectations.”
On our first annual Mix It Up-At Lunch Day, the students
were given a numbered ticket and then directed to sit at the
corresponding table. To encourage conversation, entertaining
questions were laid out for the students to discuss. These
questions included: "If you were an animal, what would you
be?" and "If you won a million dollars, what would you do with
it?"
When the plans for the Mix It Up activity were first
announced, students were skeptical, but most seemed to have
fun participating in the activity. Many students and teachers
requested having a Mix It Up activity more than once a year.
Our hope is that by participating in activities such as Mix It
Up- At Lunch Day, students will begin to break down social
barriers and improve intergroup relations so there are fewer
misunderstandings that can lead to conflict, bullying, and
harassment.

CORE ESSENTIAL
November
Leaves are changing, temperature is dropping, and we are
gearing up for our third virtue! And what better month than the
month of Thanksgiving to talk about the virtue of Gratitude –
letting others know you see how they’ve helped you.
We are learning about the value of GRATITUDE this month –
letting others know you see how they’ve helped you! Leave
others notes this month. Thank them for ways they have helped
you at home! Discuss together someone who has made life easier
for your family. Write them a JUMBO thank you card to express
your GRATITUDE! We overflow with GRATITUDE when we
think of your family.
Enjoy celebrating all that brings GRATITUDE!
Friday Nights with Coach Fieszel
The Gunter Tigers are now undefeated in district and poised for a showdown in Gunter
with the Whitewright Tigers.
Whitewright is coached by Jack Wylie, who is in his first year as head coach after
serving as defensive coordinator there for the last few years. Whitewright is as athletic
as any team we have faced this year. They are led by their Junior quarterback Tyrone
Swoopes. He is a phenomenal talent, who will be playing anywhere he wants at the
collegiate level.
Whitewright also has another Division I Prospect, TE Gerron Ballard. Ballard plays on
both sides of the ball, and will be a challenge for us to both block and cover.
We are excited about the opportunity to play for an outright district championship and
are looking forward to a physical, hard hitting game.
We are thankful for all of the community support we have received this football season.
Please come out and cheer on these young men as they pursue another district
championship for Gunter.
