Nazareth College is a private, coeducationalcollege with a liberalarts and sciences tradition.Founded in 1924 by the Sisters ofSt. Joseph, Nazareth has been independent formore than 30 years.Nazareth’s athletic missionand philosophyThe Nazareth College Athletic Department willstrive to empower its student-athletes to growas people and make a positive impact onsociety, with life-skills development, mentoring,and leadership opportunities throughcompetitive and cooperative experiences.The Athletic Department is committed toassisting in the college’s mission of educatingstudents with a goal of fostering lifelongcommitment to intellectual, ethical andaesthetic values. The Athletic Department willoperate under firm institutional control of thecollege and will always place the health andwelfare of the student-athletes, coaches andstaff first in decisions regarding the athleticsprogram.The department will operate under the NCAADivision III philosophy, through whichacademics are the student’s first priority andsportsmanship, fair play, diversity and ethicalconduct are constantly taught and promoted.Campus expansionNazareth hosted its first athletic event in Golden Flyer Stadium in the spring of 2004.2004 marked the completion of Nazareth’slargest capital campaign in history. Thecollege raised $25 million to support therecent campus expansion through the purchaseof 73 acres of adjoining land and buildings.Today’s campus features 148 acres andincludes the five-story Golisano AcademicCenter, the 2,200-seat Golden Flyer stadium,the spacious Elizabeth George and Portkaresidence halls and a softball diamond.Students now have twice as many classroomsand computer labs; more undergraduate andgraduate programs; opportunities to competeon intercollegiate teams in equestrian, crosscountry, track and field and men’s volleyball;and a choice of living options that includessuites, cafes and free laundry service.FacultyFull-time 140Part-time 78Student/Faculty Ratio 12:1Ninety-four percent of full-time faculty havereceived the highest professional degree intheir field.EnrollmentFull-time undergraduate enrollment for thefall of 2006 will be approximately 1,875. Few colleges and universities in thenation can match Nazareth’s record ofpreparing students for success in the Fulbrightcompetition—the U.S. government’s mostprestigious scholarship program.Nazareth has a distinguished history of teacherpreparation with nearly 1,700 graduates currentlyteaching in Monroe County classrooms.Nazareth features an array of health professionsprograms, including a Bachelor of Science inNursing, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, and Physical Therapy.The Nazareth College Arts Center, which housesthe departments of Theatre Arts, Music, andArt, has welcomed more than two million peopleto performances since it opened in 1967.Community serviceNinety-one percent of Nazareth undergraduatesparticipate in community service projects whilethey are students.In addition, Nazareth offers an on-campusCenter for Service Learning, which serves as aresource for students seeking volunteerplacements and for faculty who want toincorporate service into the curriculum.AlumniSeventy-five percent of Nazareth’s 23,000alumni reside in New York state. Nearly 70percent are employed in service professionsincluding education, health care, child care,social work, and counseling.Athletic highlightsThe average grade-point average of studentathletesfor the spring 2005 semester was3.06.A member of the National Collegiate AthleticAssociation, Nazareth has 21 intercollegiateteams that compete at the Division III level.Nazareth competes in the Empire 8Conference with Alfred, Elmira, Hartwick,Ithaca, RIT, St. John Fisher, and Utica.Nazareth’s men’s lacrosse team won nationalchampionships in 1992, 1996, and 1997.Nazareth finished 95th in the NACDA(National Association of Collegiate Directorsof Athletics) standings for Division III in 2004-2005.
