PRIMARYSCHOOL WORKSHOPSTen international celebrities in the fields <strong>of</strong>film, fashion, music, theatre and literature,have been paired with ten <strong>of</strong> Scotland’s finestsilversmiths. Each pair has collaborated on thedesign for a piece <strong>of</strong> silver on that most beautifulmoment, “a drink with a close friend”, resulting ina hugely varied collection <strong>of</strong> drinking vessels thatranges from absinthe goblets to teapots to claretjugs. We are <strong>of</strong>fering upper primary school classesthe unique opportunity to visit the exhibition and lookand discuss contemporary silver and our historical silvercollections and then participate in a workshop.Upper Primary Schools are invited in May and Septemberto participate in special tours and workshops tocompliment <strong>this</strong> exhibition.Lesson PlanOver the centuries, humans have created special vesselsto contain precious liquids such as water, wine, c<strong>of</strong>fee ortea. We will look at the beautiful silverware in our owncollection, explore the impact <strong>of</strong> tea and c<strong>of</strong>fee on Britainand its trading partners, discover how 18th century societyelevated the drinking <strong>of</strong> tea into a fine social art and howthe origins <strong>of</strong> modern business began in 18th century c<strong>of</strong>feehouses. We will also find out about hallmarking and therole <strong>of</strong> the “Hammermen” in medieval <strong>Edinburgh</strong>. We willcompare the traditional styles <strong>of</strong> silverware with the examplescontemporary silversmiths have created for living Scottishcelebrities, before creating our own fabulous 3-D artworkinspired by the exhibition.Workshop sessions are available for Primary 4 – 7 on thefollowing dates at 10 am – 12.30 pm.
