Admission RequirementsAll candidates for admission must possess a bachelor’s degree in aviation from a regionallyaccredited institution of higher education or in a major in a related field. Individualswho have completed a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated area but have work experiencein aviation and/or transportation industries may also apply. The applicant’s overallundergraduate GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. In special cases, the GPA may becalculated on the most recent 60 semester hours of coursework.Additionally, applicants must submit:1. A completed application (along with anonrefundable application fee).2. Academic transcripts from eachinstitution attended.3. A one-to two-page personal statementdescribing the applicant’s backgroundand how the degree relates to theapplicant’s career goals.4. Three letters of recommendation (onefrom a faculty member familiar withthe applicant’s academic performance,a second from an employer, and athird from one who can attest tothe applicant’s likely success in theprogram).When the application materials arecomplete, they will be forwarded to the<strong>University</strong> Graduate Council. The Councilhas the final say in graduate admissions.After Graduate Council review, theapplicant will then be informed in writingof its decision.Under certain circumstances, students whodo not meet the GPA requirement (GPAbelow 3.0, but above 2.5) for full admissionmay request to be admitted to the programon a provisional basis. Provisionallyadmitted students must complete the firstnine semester hours of graduate study witha GPA of 3.0 or higher. After nine hours ofcompleted coursework, a provisionallyaccepted student’s application will bereviewed again for full admission. Thisdecision will be made by the Chair of the<strong>Aviation</strong> & <strong>Transportation</strong> Department andthe Program Director.Transfer CreditA maximum of six semester hoursof graduate level work earned at aregionally accredited institution of highereducation will be accepted toward aMaster of Science degree in <strong>Aviation</strong> &<strong>Transportation</strong>. Only courses in whichthe student received a grade of B orhigher will transfer to <strong>Lewis</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Prior coursework should be current andcompleted within the last five years.All transfer credits must be documentedand approved before full admission intothe program will be granted. In approvinga request to transfer credit from anotherinstitution, the Program Director may,at his or her discretion, require that thestudent pass a proficiency exam for thecorresponding <strong>Lewis</strong> <strong>University</strong> course.CapstoneExperienceAll <strong>Lewis</strong> graduate students willparticipate in real-world capstoneexperiences within the largest aviationhub in the world. As a child, he becameinterested in aviation and has made it a point to pursue it with passion and vigor. “I enjoy the industry and see thecurrent challenges as opportunities for visionary thinking and leadership,” commented Keller.Keller was unemployed when he first enrolled in the master’s program at <strong>Lewis</strong> because the organization heworked for had filed bankruptcy. After enrolling in the program, he worked with the Office of CareerServices on campus. Within a couple of weeks of posting his resumé, he landed a job in operations,sales and market managing at Knight <strong>Transportation</strong>. “My experience at <strong>Lewis</strong> <strong>University</strong> hasimproved my life dramatically,” Keller said.The most rewarding aspect of the master’s program, for Keller, is the fact that thecoursework has real life application. He added, “The classes are making me a betterperson, both professionally and personally.” By providing him with new insights,the faculty and staff of the aviation department have allowed Keller to improvehis critical thinking skills.
