1. Membership Fees DueIt is a brand new year and this is a reminder that, if youdidn’t make use of last years’ concession / rebate and paidalready, your fees are due for 2006:Membership Type: 2006Town memberPrinciple memberAdditional memberJoining feesCountry member, pensioner, studentPrinciple memberAdditional memberJoining fees2. Duty Members220302020030202.1. Duty- and Opening/Closing Rosters for 2006Please continue thinking about this seriously and plot youropen weekends on a year-planner. During January the dutyteams will be contacted to finalise the schedule for 2006.Like we said already, it is a mammoth task to plan a wholeyear AND shuffle between so many teams’ preferences toaccommodate everything and everyone. Please be aslenient as you can. We are well aware that Workshop Dutyis a huge taxing “job” you’re doing for the Club and wenever take our duty-members’ efforts for granted, but we’realso all too aware that the Club cannot function without aproper system here. We again appeal to newermembers that have not volunteered (especiallyhusband-/wife teams) to think about this seriouslyand consider giving your names to Dieter and Lindaas soon as possible. If we all do our bit, this Club of ours– that’s pushing its seams the past 3-4 years – can functionproperly and the workload doesn’t fall only on a selectedfew.2.2. Grocery Cupboard in KitchenOne of the stalwarts in our Club, Lex Krabbendam, againmade a HUGE contribution and donation to the Club’sfunctioning by adding a provisions / grocery cupboard to thekitchen. The keys for this cupboard are with the kitchenkeys in the main cupboard. Please note that all our stock /provisions / groceries (tea, coffee, cookies, drinks, milk, etc.)are now kept in here and no longer in the Storeroom.3. Feedback from the Executive Committee’sBOSBERAADOn December 10 the whole Executive Committee gatheredfor a day (from 9am – 5pm) at the house of John Bruigomto brainstorm the functioning of PGMC.All the management portfolios in the Club were dissectedand looked at afresh to see where we can improve andmake this ever growing club of ours run more smoothly.Over the next two months we will give you continuousfeedback on some decisions taken. For a start, here aresome of the decisions that were taken:3.1. Workshop & MachineryA huge part of our discussions revolved around the Clubs’finances and the essence of it all was that the Club lacks thefunds to maintain the machinery to keep up with theincreased workload. After intensive financial investigation ofour running costs, we’re sorry to say, but we can’t do it for“free” (R5) anymore. The Committee decided at the Bosberaad that there will be asubstantial increase in the (very low) Workshop fees in 2006– the detail of which will be thrashed out at the Januarycommittee meeting, presented to the membership at theJanuary monthly meeting and published in the FebruaryNewsletter to be effective from 1 March 2006.3.2. Back-up teams / sub-committee teams /2.I.C.’sAnother lively point of discussion was the time that therunning of PGMC takes from the members of the maincommittee. It’s not always obvious, but some people workin the background almost as for a full time job on keepingthe big PGMC wheel turning all the time. Although we alllove what we’re doing for the hobby and the club, it’s onlyfair to keep in mind that THIS IS OUR HOBBY and organizingoutings, meetings, events, workshops, classes, etc. shouldnever be a burden, no matter how big the membership (theClub) becomes. Thus, a decision was taken that in some portfolios we needmore backup and even a Second-in-charge (2.I.C.), in somecases serving on the main committee and in other cases justacting as backup in the background. An organigram will be put up in the Clubhouse so that youall can see who is responsible for what in the Club. If youlook at the structure of PGMC and see yourselves gettinginvolved in a certain area, the contact details of the managerin charge will be on the organigram and you can thenproceed to contact that person directly.Over the next few months the managers of the differentsections in the Club will “ask for help” via the Newsletter. We will make this process very clear and transparent so thatthe person that volunteers to help will know exactly what’sexpected, how much time will be involved, etc.3.3. Induction DayA piece of valuable information that came to our attentionfrom new members lately, is that people would love to getmore involved, but are not sure what / how. When enteringour Clubhouse or Workshop and seeing the “BUZZ” it can bequite daunting if someone for instance asks you if you’d liketo become a duty member. The same applies for “jobs” likeSecretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, etc. Thus the committee decided that in 2006 we will have anInduction Course (1 Day) for new members, soon afterjoining. When a person joins we will have someone to do“shadow” duty on that day and take the new membersthrough everything (as if doing duty) – how the machineryworks, what the admin desk entails, what happens in otherareas of the Club, etc. etc. We hope that not only will newmembers then be much more familiar with our activities, butwill also then have the courage/confidence to get involved. The Chairman wishes to thank the committee foroffering their time and for their devotion andcommitment to sit for a whole day to do this jobfor the Club. The full committee attended.4. PersonalsWe received some very sad news in November. Ourmembers, Wynand and Amanda Meiring moved to CapeTown from Pretoria at the end of September 2005. Amandadied on Tuesday 25 October 2005 in Cape Town. We wereshocked by the news and we wish to let Wynand, Ilene &Hugo Meiring know that we’ll keep them in our prayers andthoughts in the difficult months to come. We will rememberAmanda’s enthusiasm for our hobby and we hope to see thefamily again some time in the future.… cont./Page 3 of 8

We appreciate your effort.4. Mineral Meeting, November 15Nine members attended the Mineral Section meeting inNovember. A total of 30 mineral specimens (brought along bymembers) were individually evaluated by the memberspresent and then an average value was determined for eachspecimen. This exercise gives a good indication of what eachmember would be willing to pay for each particular specimen. What made the exercise more fun was then to compare theaverage price with the original purchase price (where availableand also how many years ago).A short organisational meeting was then held, discussing partof the Questionnaire which appeared in the previousNewsletter (five Questionnaires were handed in). As a resultof this, the following decisions were taken:-In future, Mineral Section meetings will be held on a fixed dayof the month, viz. every FIRST Tuesday of the month, meeting starting at 19:30.
